IE7 User Agent String

IE7 has a new user agent string. See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/04/27/412813.aspx for details.

As we continue our testing of IE7 we continue to come across web sites that are not expecting version 7 of the browser. Often they helpfully suggest an upgrade to an alternative browser or to IE5 or later. As noted in the blog entry above you can test your own site with the IE7 user agent string today by using the registry entries mentioned there. If you run a website why not do a quick test to ensure that you are ready to accept the new IE7 user agent string?

And before you all ask, no I'm not going to discuss IE7 schedule or feature details in response to comments on this post :). As we get to beta we will discuss details of the release.

Thanks
-Dave

Well, the web is slow. You made it behave that way. Deal with it.

Hi Dave,
As a developer working on a tool (Delphi.NET) that uses MSHTML as it's design surface I'd sure like to get my hands on the IE7 bits asap since we're working on our next release and the release of IE7 is surely going to impact us. What options do we have to get access to MSHTML in IE7 asap?
Thanks

So what you are saying is that all the webdevelopers out there who use strict w3c code should check their website. It sounds more like someone should check the back-end that sends the CSS to the browser.... this can be easily overcome but doing a partial check on the name of the browser agent.

I cannot wait to see IE7 in action and compare it to the up and coming Fireforx.

Will ASP.NET in Visual Studio.NET 2005 Support the IE 7.0 Agent Strings by default or do we have to build it in by code?

This is working now for me.

I would like to know if it is possible to get a copy of a beta version to make sure all the scripts written in JS are working fine.

This way we can make sure our customers will not be affected by the new release.

Colin

C'mon people,

Instead of yapping on about 'undefined standards' which Microsoft handles, this article speaks of internet sites excpecting a different agent string.

In all, we're talking about web sites displaying different sites based on the agent string here, not W3C compliancy and such, which is I believe is a completely different topic.

Vampier,
Please read the post before commenting. All that is being asked here is that people have sites that accept the new UA string for IE7. This is completely unrelated to standard recommendations around CSS. This is an issue that comes up with every new version of a browser for a few sites that hard code the version numbers of browsers they expect. As DSCX pointed out standards are a completely different topic.
Thanks

So will conditional comments work in that release?
A la, <![if ! IE 7]>
That should work, not?

I'd hope so, as I've been coding the link to all my IE only 'hack' stylesheets with an if lte ie 6.000 conditional comment in the hope that IE7 won't need them :/

For many years I have been doing my best to provide accurate user agent definitions for browsers and spiders. I've already got the new UA for IE7 in my browscap.ini file and it's available for download free of charge.
