Not just is the project really nice, but it is a great demo of some .NET 2 features, like building custom DataSourceControls and BuildProviders. I hope more of your peers within the ASP.NET team will work on similar projects, which will help people undrestand the ASP.NET 2 extention points.

.NET Framework v2.0 is required.

RSS Toolkit is using some v2.0 APIs and generics. However, porting it back v1.1 should not be very difficult.

This sounds great, but I'm running into a wall implementing it. After selecting RSSDataSource for the DataList, I get the following error message:

"Error Creating Control - RssDataSource1

"Unable to cast object of type 'RssToolkit.RssDataSource' to type 'RssToolkit.RssDataSource'."

Any thoughts?

one little issue: In PopulateChannel, If I have a querystring in a URL like this:

Looking at it in Reflector it's because of

if (virtualPath.IndexOfAny(VirtualPath.s_illegalVirtualPathChars) >= 0)

in System.Web.VirtualPath.Create.

Perhaps this might do the trick:

Exception on "~/path?qs" is a bug that I'll need to fix...

The easiest fix is to save/restore query string in ResolveAppRelativeLinkToUrl around the call to VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute.

A workaround is to use fully qualified UTLs instead of "~/...".

-- Please reset Visual Studio Toolbox, exit Visual Studio, add RssToolkit.dll to the GAC, start Visual Studio again, add the controls to the toolbox. The problem should go away. If not, please let me know.

Dmitri, look into Isolated Storage for using disk caching. Isolated Storage is provided by the .NET Framework for just this type of thing, without having to configure directories for write access (Isolated Storage gaurantees this, with some limits)

Please pardon my ignorance. I am running the samples and on scenario1.aspx I am getting a proxy error.

The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required.

Can you advise? Theoretically, my application will publish and consume RSS in a company environment with proxy authentication required. Each user has an ID/password for the proxy server. Currently, when each user visits an internet web site, the proxy authentication login dialog will pop up.

Hoa,

Is the error you are seeing happen when you attempt to make the outbound HTTP request to download the feed (WebClient.DownloadData)? If so, you could try setting the Credential (and Proxy) property of WebClient instance.

Are you able to make any outbound HTTP requests from your pages?

This is an excellent control - very useful and a great how-to example as well.

I've noticed one small bug when creating the control through VWDs design interface. If I add a data-bound control to my page and use 'New Data Source' to set up the datasource, I get the following error:

"Error Creating Control - RssDataSource1

"Unable to cast object of type 'RssToolkit.RssDataSource' to type 'RssToolkit.RssDataSource'."

I can get rid of this error by switching to source view, then back to design view.

I just wanted to vent for a minute.
I have been looking for a .NET RSS toolkit which support feeds that use the Dublin Core. Dublin Core feeds do not use the pubDate, rather user another namespace, dc:Date.

This is rather frustating.

Hi I love the ideas behind this. I have a problem though, when i try to run for example scenario 3 included with the rsstoolkit, im getting a type or namespace MsnbcChannel cannot be found error. I have added the toolkit dll to the GAC. What would be wrong?

Did you create web application root pointing to the samples directory (app_code must be right under application root)? MsnbcChannel is a class defined in the .cs file in app_code. You can re-generate it using rssdl.exe.

I also had problems getting through our corporate proxy. I fixed this by updating RssDownloadManager.DownloadChannelDom():

// download the feed
WebClient wc = new WebClient();
wc.Proxy.Credentials =
System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultNetworkCredentials;
byte[] feed = wc.DownloadData(url);
...

You may want to have other possible options - like using a username and password, but this code will use whatever is defined in the Internet Options for the user - which is fine for me as I'm using it for non-asp stuff.

The toolkit is superb and made a big difference to some of the applications I am working on.

The only problem I have is that I can't find a way to retrieve more than 10 entries from a feed.

Also having a problem with the cache. (Have a forms client using RSSTookit to read feeds).
Changing ttl or the date doesn't invalidate the cache.
So if I set the date to a year previous and run again - the date is the old date rather than the new one.

I really like this toolkit, thanks for sharing! Some tips/ideas to make it even more better:
- Provide an XSD schema file for the .rss files that IntelliSense can use.
- Attach DescriptionAttribute to the public properties of the RSS controls.
- Generate XML comments to the generated classes.
- Return date values as DateTime properties.

With the upcoming release of IE 7, the rss feeds icon relies on 'link' tags being placed into the head tag of the web page, see http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/articles/PublishersGuide.aspx.
Is it possible for you to modify your excellent control to automatically put these tags onto the page, when a rsshyperlink control is rendered?

A few month's ago I was looking for an easy way to consume and produce RSS feeds. Since I hate XML these days, manually parsing this did not sound like a good idea for me, despite the great XML classes in .NET. Enter the RSSToolKit, from DMitryr.

Has anyone come across with a problem with reading in particular RSS feeds?.

Im trying to pull in yahoo's news feed into my page using GenericRssChannel.LoadChannel and by restricting the items to 5 by SelectItems(5). I have noticed that the the feeds are not in any date order. After further investigation yahoo's feeds seem to be in some random order, the newest isn't even at the bottom or the top of the xml document. Is there any way in the code that i can sort by pubDate?.

I'd like to use it for storing Typepad posts in a SQL Server database. I can see the posts in a GridView, using the RssDataSource, but I cannot seem to find out how to copy this data to a DataTable for further processing.

Basically, I'd like to iterate through the posts and access the columns/cells contents.

Any suggestions?

For anyone who is reading...

I succeeded using the Rows property of the GridView. Doesn't sound very elegant, but it has the advantage that it works :-)

And I needed it just once, so there is no performance penalty, even if it is kludgy.

The toolkit can be used in VB.NET applications as well as in C# applications.

The toolkit itself is implemented in C# so you have to use C# to modify it.

Thanks for writing this toolkit. It looks really neat and I really want to use it in my app.

I installed the Toolkit (placed the .dll in my bin directory). I've constructed my ASP.NET application the way you describe it in your RssToolkit.doc.

When I run it on my ASP.NET application, it compiles ok, but I get the following runtime error.

"The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly. "

Would you be able to help me with this? I posted this question on forums.asp.net but no one seems to have the answer. Sorry to have to disturb you for this. Thanks very much.

I'm facing some problem with rss tool. I've created dumy application and its working fine on local system.

but as soon as i try to upload it on ftp, the web.config file gives the following error:

The error indicated that the RSS feed is not a valid XML. Toolkit uses XML parser to parse RSS.

It could be that Google doesn't let your hoster download the feed for some reason. RSS Toolkit uses WebClient APIs for download -- I would try calling:

new WebClient().DownloadString(...)

directly from your page and see what it returns.

Good job on a useful tool.

I was wondering if it would make sense to have member properties of the Cannel RssChannelBase for the required and optional channel elements based on the rss 2.0 specification. These properties could have documentation on their use as well as being able to render dates based on the rss 2.0 specification (http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/rss/rss.html).

Managed to get an RSSDatasource and a datalist on a page, but keep getting "System.Net.WebException: The remote name could not be resolved: 'weblogs.asp.net'".

I have url set to http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/rss.aspx

but it does not work :-(

Any Ideas ?

Well I thought I had it working, but an getting the can't cast error message for the RSSDataSource:-(

I removed it from the toolbox and closed VS, but everytime I try and add it to the GAC I get a strong names error ?

gacutil -i D:\AspNetRssToolkit-V2[1].0-Binaries\RssToolkit\bin\Release\RssToolkit.dll

Failure adding assembly to the cache: Attempt to install an assembly without a strong name

don't understand how to fix this.

Is there another version of the DLL i should be adding ?

This is out of the zip file.

gacutil should work on the assembly out of ZIP file -- it is strongly named, I've just double checked.

It is possible that you are running 'old' gacutil.exe -- please run try one from .NET v2.0+.

This might be the original .NET 2.0 SDK.

Sorry for mixing up the versions:-(

On codeplex there is a Strong names problem with 2.0.

You have to add a strong names file and recompile the source.

Then put it in the GAC.

These things are all new to me.

I was able to get the RssToolkit to work when I ran the site through Visual Studio. However, when I go directly to http://localhost/mysite, I get the following error:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

I'm assuming if it was a trust issue, it would appear for Visual Studio as well.

Do you or anyone else have a resolution for this?

To check if there are new items you need to add 'if-modified-since' header.

I have tried everything but could not find the solution for this.

i am usng vs2008 and when i used rss tool kit it all works fine on my local machine but when i upload it to my server ,my page takes long time and comes up with some /server erro and asking me to change web.config file so custom errors can be ssen from remote machine.which i tried but no use and when i delete the data table when displays rss then my site works fine.please advise.

Is your server configured to allow your application to make outbound HTTP requests? Please try a simple page making a request to the RSS url --

new WebClient().DownloadData(url);

If this fails, please follow up with the hoster (owner of the remote server).
