IMO Tivo and MCE 2005, or any HTPC for that matter, are not direct competitors. The MCE system is capable of an order of magnitude more than the Tivo. Not to mention it can do all of these things in glorious HD, assuming you are using an HDTV. Yes, there are HD Tivos now, but that only covers the TV portion.

Here are the things I use my (dedicated) HTPC for:
-Recording Cable tv and over-the-air HDTV.
-Upsampling DVDs to HD using FFDshow (better quality than any dvd player that upconverts to HD)
-Playing DVDs and archived HDTV from my media server
-Playing games in widescreen w/ 5.1 home theater sound.
-Playing music archived in WMA lossless.

You can also:
-Control home automation systems (dim the lights when starting a dvd, etc)
-Lot of other stuff.

Not to mention a computer allows you to update software and hardware at will, so any new technology can be incorporated easily.

It's a whole different market.
