Are you still on the fence? There’s a very cool session @ PDC on the data-tier application component called “Simplifying Application Packaging and Deployment with SQL Server 2008 R2”. Yes, that’s probably one of the longest session titles ever. Omri Bahat, a PM on my team, recently sat down with Robert Hess (The Knowledge Chamber) to discuss the DAC and the session @ PDC. You can view the video here. Even if you’re not attending PDC you should watch the video to learn more about this fantabulous new technology in SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010.

Perfect Conference Storm

November is shaping up to be the perfect storm of conferences. In a time when budgets are extremely tight it amazes me that we have 4 conferences to cover in November.

SQL PASS

When: November 2-5, 2009

Where: Seattle, Washington

Site: http://summit2009.sqlpass.org/

Sessions: 2 focused on SQL Server 2008 R2/Visual Studio 2010

SQL Connections

When: November 9-12, 2009

Where: Las Vegas, Nevada

Site: http://www.devconnections.com/shows/FALL2009SQL

Sessions: 3 – 1 on SQL Server 2008 R2/Visual Studio 2010 and 2 on SQL Server 2008

TechEd Europe

When: November 9-13, 2009

Where: Berlin, Germany

Site: http://www.microsoft.com/europe/teched/

Sessions: 3 – 1 on SQL Server 2008 R2/Visual Studio 2010 and 2 on SQL Server 2008

PDC

When: November 17-19, 2009

Where: Los Angeles, California

Site: http://microsoftpdc.com/

Sessions: 1 focused on SQL Server 2008 R2/Visual Studio 2010

We have a tremendous amount of great content @ each of these conferences.

It’s been a while since I’ve presented so I’m seriously considering taking the SQL Connections gig. After all I love Vegas and my brother from another mother and SQL Server MVP Steve Jones will be there. What more could I ask for.

Application & Multi-Server Management

@ the SQL PASS Summit on 11/20 we announced our plans to release new capabilities for improving the collaboration between Data-Tier Developers and DBA and to address Multi-Server (or multi-instance) manageability for SQL Server.

Anthony Carrabino has a great posting describing these capabilities. I won’t repeat Anthony here.

In addition, I recorded a session Joey Snow from Technet Edge. This gives you a quick overview along with a demo.

I’ve been working with the team on this for about 4 months. We started work on this early in the Katmai release and had to put it on the shelf for several months (and I mean several months). It’s very exciting to see that early work start to come to life.

There are a couple of points I want to be sure are clearly understood:

1) We are building on our existing technology investments. This includes Policy-based Management, Data Collector, SMO, PowerShell, and others.

2) The first set of functionality – the foundation, if you will – will be available in SQL Server Kilimanjaro. This release is scheduled for the first half (H1) of calendar year 2010.

I’m very excited with what we’re going to deliver in Kilimanjaro and beyond. My early take is this stuff will forever change the database business.

SQL PASS Summit

SQL Pass is coming up this month, November 18-21 @ the Washington State Convention Center. You can find details here.

Aside from the multitude of sessions covering SQL Server there are a couple fun and interesting things that I’ll call your attention to.

First, I’m participating in a panel discussing Automating DBA Processes. Quest Software is sponsoring the panel discussion.

The panelists are:

Allen White, SQL Server MVP and Trainer for Scalability Experts (moderator)

Kevin Kline, SQL Server MVP and Technical Strategy Manager, Quest Software

Buck Woody, Program Manager, SQL Server, Microsoft

Dan Jones, Group Program Manager, SQL Server, Microsoft

Thomas LaRock, Database Engineering Lead, ING Investment Management

Charley Hanania, Production Product Owner, SQL Server, UBS

Brent Ozar, SQL Server Domain Expert, Quest Software

I’m honored to be in such distinct company. You can find out more information and register for the discussion here.

Second, Thursday night is a huge celebration. SQL Server’s very own house band, Flock of SQLs will be performing. Here’s a promo picture of the Flock of SQLs. BTW: that’s me on the far left – yep, I play drums for the group. And yep, this is a shameless plug!

I know in these times budgets are tight. If you are a new or an experienced SQL Server DBA this is a must attend conference. What you’ll learn and the caliber of people you’ll network are easily worth 10 times the cost to attend. In addition to the SQL Server MVPs and numerous SQL Server gurus there will be well over 200 people from the SQL Server product group in attendance. Take a look at the Session grid and I’m sure you’ll be convinced of the value! Here’s some additional information on the event @ Microsoft.com.

If you do attend come find me and say hey!
