Import Customizations to Leads, Accounts, Contacts

When importing customizations you may encounter an error: The attribute map is invalid.

invaliddatamap

To fix this error and move on with your import:

  • Look at the following attributes in Lead, Account and Contact:
    • address1_line1
    • address1_line2
    • address1_line3
    • address2_line1
    • address2_line2
    • address2_line3
  • In your source attributes for Leads, the field size may not match the field size in your targets Account and Contact: nvarchar (200) versus nvarchar (50)
  • Modify either your source or your target attributes so the field sizes all match
  • You may need to re-do the mapping in the 1:N Relationship for Lead:Account and Lead:Contact
  • Publish changes, and import customizations again.
CRM Online Email Router updated to support Exchange Online

Microsoft has recently (11/17) released an update to the CRM Online Email Router.  This update adds support for connectivity between CRM Online and Exchange Online.  The CRM Online Email Router Installation Guide has also been update to reflect these changes.

Microsoft Exchange Online support
With the November 2009 Service Update, the Email Router supports Microsoft Exchange Online. With this support, the Email Router can be configured to connect to Exchange Online mailboxes to process incoming and outgoing Email messages by using Exchange Web Services (EWS).

Microsoft Support created a scenario’s doc titled "Microsoft Dynamics CRM: How to configure the On-premise and Online E-mail Router in different deployment scenarios" to provide additional guidance.

I will be posting another blog with details on how to configure and a corresponding video.  Keep checking back as I will update this post with links to each.

Installing the CRM Online Outlook Client via SMS

The purpose of this post is to provide some guidance and resources for creating a SMS-based installation routine for the CRM Outlook client.

First and foremost, make sure you are downloading the CRM Outlook client that is specific to CRM Online.  The link is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=e8e6c81a-b7b2-4e57-8599-604967617396

Next, review the CRM Implementation Guide sections on deploying the CRM Client for Outlook with SMS.

Please keep in mind that the Implementation Guide (IG) instructions are geared toward on-premise CRM, which would leverage Active Directory.  As a result, some modifications to the IG instructions will be required.

Ignore any documentation references to “Update Rollup X”.  Update Rollups apply only to the on-premise version of the software.  As of this post the cloud-based service, and the CRM Client for Outlook, are on the latest release known publicly as the “November 2009 Service Update,” and known internally as “R4.”

Additional considerations:

  1. Client machines will need access to the internet to complete the configuration process.
  2. Users will need to accept an invitation into the service before they can configure their Outlook-based access.
  3. If SMS allows for it, you may want to add “live.com” and “crm.dynamics.com” to users’ Internet Explorer trusted sites.
  4. The timeout on the SMS job should be longer to allow the bootstrapper enough time to download the rest of the client setup components.
  5. After the silent installation the Configuration Wizard will run in the background upon the first subsequent launch of Outlook.  This may require users to enter their Windows Live credentials to complete their access.  This is a relatively straightforward process.

There’s also a good blog post on installing with SMS located here: http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/2008/02/22/how-to-deploy-microsoft-dynamics-crm-client-through-sms.aspx.

A World Without Choice, Part 2

clip_image002

“Technology must be able to adapt to unique business processes and changing strategies. Organizations that invest in flexible, proven CRM solutions will position themselves for success both today and tomorrow.”  - Rebecca Wetteman, vice president, Nucleus Research

As the saying goes, the only constant is change.  Fundamentally, Microsoft believes that as business conditions change, software should flexible enough adapt easily.  Our most recent Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online release, the November 2009 service update, gives organizations more choice in how they consume, use, and set-up CRM for their own businesses – and we’re pretty excited with how the market has responded to it.

We’re looking for more customers to tell their story about how they were able to overcome obstacles with Microsoft Dynamics CRM (Online or on-premise) to achieve their goals.  To inspire the thought process, consider these Microsoft Dynamics CRM customers:

· Barclays Bank PLC, a consumer banking division in the United Arab Emirates, has seen a 15 percent improvement in customer satisfaction and has attributed Microsoft Dynamics CRM for a 22 percent drop in service costs per customer incident.

· Booz Allen Hamilton, a strategy and technology consulting firm that licensed the 1 millionth Microsoft Dynamics CRM seat, is standardizing Microsoft Dynamics CRM as a platform to deliver relational line-of-business applications across the organization.

· The City of London in the U.K. uses the power and flexibility of Microsoft Dynamics CRM as an xRM development platform to enhance the services such as event planning and voter management it provides to citizens, businesses and visitors.

· Hard Rock International, a world-renowned hotel and restaurant group, uses Microsoft Dynamics CRM to reduce its customer inquiry response times from four days to just a few hours. This efficiency has enabled it to add new venues (casinos and hotels) around the world without having to add additional customer care staff.

· Maccabi Healthcare Services, a healthcare organization located in Israel, has implemented Microsoft Dynamics CRM with Microsoft Office SharePoint as the service application to provide quick response and accurate information to its members.

· Polaris Industries, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of all-terrain vehicles, deployed a dealer self-service portal and realized efficiency gains up to 35 percent compared with previous processes.

· Vodafone Iceland, a telecommunications company, has exceeded its own first-time call resolution rates expectations of 95 percent while also increasing sales by 20 percent since implementing Microsoft Dynamics CRM for its sales and service teams.

Let us know if you have a story that you’d like to share.  We’re excited to learn more about the challenges you’ve faced and solved!

And, for those interested in learning more about the six months free offer referenced in the image above should click here to get more information.

A World Without Choice, Part 1

clip_image002

A world without choice, for some organizations, would be more reality than fiction.

While many organizations have made CRM investments with other vendors because they were led to believe that they were “cheaper,” these same organizations are learning first-hand about the tradeoffs with those purchases.  Interface restrictions.  Deployment restrictions.  Integration restrictions.  And extreme pricing or nickel and diming that forces them into uncomfortable payment terms.

Last week’s announcement of the latest Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online release, the November 2009 service update, was an important release for the market in two ways.   First, organizations can get started quickly, easily, and for less money.  Second, Salesforce.com and Oracle CRM On Demand customers can switch to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online and get the first six months free.

Considering Microsoft Dynamics CRM has over 1 million users and 20,000 customers, has achieved sub-second response times for 50,000 concurrent users, and been recognized with industry awards for product innovation and customer success, it has become one of the fastest growing products in the CRM industry.

We’re excited about last week’s announcement, the interest it’s generated, and how the market is questioning competitive approaches.  What do you think?

UR7, R4 and other confusing terms

It’s not always clear that Dynamics CRM Online Dynamics CRM 4.0.  CRM 4.0 specifically refers to the On-Premise version of the software that a customer would house in their own data center.  CRM Online specifically refers to the cloud-based service hosted by Microsoft.

This confusion comes to a head when we release updates.  The table below may help.

We’re on a regular release cycle now for updates to the On-Premise software (“4.0”).  You’ll see updates called “Update Rollup x” about every 6-8 weeks.  Some folks refer to them as “UR7” and the like.  CRM Online customers should not try to apply any Update Rollup installations to their CRM for Outlook client.

You may have also heard the term “R4” with respect to CRM Online.  That is the internal jargon we use when referring to the November 2009 Service Update that went live yesterday.  CRM Online administrators and users will be automatically notified when updates are ready for installation.  CRM Online customers should wait until their CRM Online service in the Microsoft data center has been upgraded before attempting to upgrade the client.  We are rolling out the upgrades over the next week or so.

If you are anxious, you can click Start > Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 > Update, to check for updates manually.
