Hi - excellent article...thanks for helping out we server folks. I have a similar question about installing Zune 3.0 on Windows Home Server (ie., Windows Server 2003). I found some different steps online & actually got Zune to run as you did on 2008. However, the fonts are very screwed up almost to the point of illegibility. I checked my Video Performance settings in Zune & they're set to basic. I installed Consolas & Segoe & still no luck. Do you have any thoughts?

Interesting scenario... I haven't played around with Windows Home Server (beyond installing it in my Hyper-V environment at home), so I don't know what all the limitations are.

I'm not sure what fonts the Zune software uses, but arguably, it'll either come with them or use what's already in the box. You might double-check to see that all of the fonts on your Windows XP/Vista box are installed in Windows Home Server if it is in fact a font-related issue. Setting the display preferences to Basic is a good first step.

Help! I used your excellent instructions to install Zune 3.0 and now I can't uninstall in order to install 3.1!

I have used unzoone to remove all the services, and the windows installer clean up util to get rid of it out of the add remove programs list and then deleted the zune folder out of the program files directory, but now I get this error: http://flamer.co.nz/Random/ZuneInstallError.jpg

I have another Server 2008 computer with Zune installed, keen to not repeat my mistakes on that one... Have you manged to get 3.1 working on yours?

Thanks for the note. Yes, I was able to get Zune 3.1 installed on Server 2008 using the workaround I described above, but I had to uninstall Zune 3.0 first using a different workaround, as the Zune 3.0 / 3.1 "ZuneSetup.exe" still has the hard block for Server 2008.

I'm not familiar with unzoone, but I would generally be suspect of anything that tried to crawl through the registry to remove it. The MSI uninstaller will generally do a good job of cleaning up Zune.

In any case - on a clean install of Server 2008, you should be able to repeat the above directions for Zune 3.1. I'll post something in a little bit about upgrading from Zune 3.0 to 3.1 on Server 2008.

I finally managed to get it installed by changing ownership of the registry keys that were causing the error, and then giving myself permissions... Phew!
