Tip of the Day: The Always Annoying 'Found New Hardware' Wizard

add new hw wizard

Question from a customer in the Forums:

"Is there a way of disabling the Found New Hardware Wizard in Windows XP Embedded?"

Answer:

Yes, this is possible.

The Add Hardware Control Panel component includes a file newdev.dll, it's responsible for that popup prompting the user to install drivers. Some customers disable this component while others delete the file from the runtime after testing their scenarios to ensure they don't require it.

Still others allow the component to remain in their configuration but will rename newdev.dll to something like newdev.tmp before sealing their image. This allows an admin or script in the future to rename it back if you needed the functionality (note, that renaming part is pretty hacky, but from the newdev.dll threads in the XPe newsgroup, it appears a few are using it successfully).
