September Security Update KB938464 doesn't install on XPE

One of the DQI packages, KB938464, in the September 2008 XPe securty update release fails to install on an XPe image properly. The installation succeeds however, the files are not copied. This is because of the presence of the MinimizeFootprint key in XPE images, which causes reduced SetupApi functionality.

To install KB938464 on a XPe image, please follow this workaround.

  1. Start a command prompt.
  2. Extract files from the package: "WindowsXP-KB938464-x86-ENU.exe /x:<dir name>"
  3. Move SP2QFE\ASMS folder to the root of your extracted folder: "Move <dir name>\SP2QFE\ASMS" .
  4. Execute "<dir name>\update\update.exe". You will be guided through installation wizard to install the package. After installation is complete, the system will reboot.
  5. Delete the temporary folder: "Move <dir name>\SP2QFE\ASMS ".

Example: (from a command prompt)

WindowsXP-KB938464-x86-ENU.exe /x:c:\temp\KB938464

CD /d c:\temp\KB938464

Move SP2QFE\ASMS .

cd update

update.exe

Hi Mark,

I have exactly the same problem, but with the KB938464-v2 on XPe. I tried your workaround but it does not help.

Any hints?

Regards,

Bastian
