I've downloaded the Eval version of Windows XP Embedded (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=dacd1722-256b-48c5-91c1-af6062340efc&DisplayLang=en) and the Eval version of the Feature Pack 2007 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9BDF1DEA-A37E-4D25-83DF-AABBAA78914F&displaylang=en) and I'm unable to install the Feature Pack 2007 Tools Update. I get the following error:

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

I have installed the Windows XP Embedded Eval version successfully, rebooted and still get this error.

Any ideas?

Hi there. This error will occur if you attempt to upgrade your XPe Tools from SP1 directly to FP2007. You must install the SP2 Tools Update on Disk 3 before you can install the FP2007 Tools Update.

Can someone please explain how the FP2007 that is available for download right now is an "Evaluation" ?? Is there something different about the code that i should not use for deployment? What is going to be different about the pack when it is finally on the OEM Embedded web site?

Brian,

The bits in the "Evaluation" version are exactly the same as the one you'll later see in the OEM secure site.

As Andy said in the blog article, what's different is the license. Again, note: "you'll have to uninstall and revert back to SP2 and then install Retail when it's up on the Secure site."

When will the non-evaluation version be on the "secure site"? Before or after Vista's public availability?

Why is it necessary to uninstall the "evaluation" version and to revert back to sp2 when "the bits are exactly the same"?

Hi Pellinore, i was expecting the download to be on the OEM secure site already, our release manager is investigating the issue. To download the eval version you're accepting a license that says you won't ship software based on the eval. Yes, i agree this seems odd because the bits are binary and windiff identical! Because of this I will continue to try to drive change in this process so that it makes more sense and doesn't affect you in the future.

In the meantime, please accept my apology for any inconvenience or confusion this is causing.

So in reality, the only difference between the "Eval" we can download now and the one that will be released to the OEM site is likely the EULA text file on the CD?

There is no technical requirement to re-install it after the OEM version is available, but MS legal team wants you to say you downloaded it from the OEM site? This is classic.

Also of note is that several places in the help files and read-me files link to the MS Connect beta site located on the current eval .ISO. I guessing this is a mistake for a final release product.
