Actually I would have expected you to ask about the customization of data graphics and the refresh rate of data linking, so I'm curious about what you meant by the reverse in your comment.

Data Graphics refresh whenever the data in the shapes changes. Data Link is the feature that performs the shape data updates after refreshing from a data source. Are you thinking about real-time data scenarios?

This indeed is one feature that would be widely used. I am wondering if Visio team has enabled it such that 3rd parties could develop their own widgets to use. Any information will be encouraging. Thanks.

Yes, 3rd parties can create their own data graphics. They are simply shapes that have a special signature that Visio can interpret.

We'll be providing in-depth explanations for this content as we get closer to release, but it can be as simple as adding a few User-defined cells to your custom widget shape.

Hi Erick,

Excellent article, i have a question for you. If the data you're going to visualize on the shape have to be preprocess (any operation with all the rows like a sum or something like that) could I do that?

Maybe programming a custom formula? I know that you can make custom formulas but, could i do any operation with all of the rows in the external data window?

Is there a way to control the size of the data graphic. I am using a number of icons to give a traffic light indication on the status of project elements and need to make the default size smaller.
