My “technology themes” for 2009

I thought it would be useful to start 2009 by briefly summarising what you should expect to find on this blog over the coming months. Data : I will continue to spend time looking at what Microsoft and others are up to around working with data. You should

Just testing out SlideShare for making ppts more discoverable. This is the deck I did for the NxtGenUG Southampton. You can also get the links from http://blogs.msdn.com/ukdevevents . What do you think? A useful way for us to share decks as well as on

And the winner is… LINQ to Entities and the ADO.NET Entity Framework

In 2001 we first demonstrated Object Relational Mapping (ORM) technology for .NET – ObjectSpaces . However it has taken 6+ years to get to the point where we have released an ORM. Actually we released two. The release of Visual Studio 2008 in November

A few rough edges in our shiny new Data stack

We have a rather impressive set of new technologies for working with data – LINQ, LINQ to SQL, LINQ to Entities, Data Services, ASP.NET Dynamic Data etc. What I am finding is… they don’t all get on with each other as well as you might have thought. My

LINQ Overview concept map #2

Just started the day with a swift play with my original concept map .

My first concept map – LINQ overview

Well – my first using a tool inspired by Udi . Took…maybe 5 minutes. Very sweet. Clearly this could be exploded out into much more detail – but I have real work to do :-)

Microsoft Sync Framework released

The best feature in SQL Server 2008 – sqlps.exe?

I am beginning to think it could be humble sqlps.exe. SQL Server 2008 includes powershell support – it is very, very nice. I have barely scraped the surface of sqlps but I know it is a feature that needs to be more widely talked about. You can launch

I am installing SQL Server 2008 – not that I planned to :-)

I am looking at the list of things I planned to do today. It does not say “Install SQL Server 2008 RC0”. Yet here I am at 7pm still playing around with SQL Server. It went roughly like this. My notebook was only running SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 Microsoft

Building a "brand new application" - WPF, ADO.NET Data Services, LINQ to Entities with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

At the end of June I run workshops with 2 ISVs both looking to completely re-develop their applications. One is entirely VB6, the other a combination of VB6 with C++. The beauty of "starting from scratch" with a one to two year development plan

Still confused by Data Mining? (I know I am)

Which is why I thought I would point you at this great video resource. You may well get to use it before I do (I think I have my hands full learning to code again - but I have started to skim them). These sessions were presented to 20 Countries across
