Open XML SDK at TechEd EMEA Developers

I’ll be presenting two sessions on the Open XML SDK at Tech Ed 2008 EMEA in Barcelona.

OFC206 - Open XML SDK Version 2 Overview and Architecture (November 12, 13:30 - 14:45)

In this session, I’ll present an overview of V2 of the Open XML SDK.  I’ll talk a bit about the architecture of the Open XML formats.  I’ll then compare and contrast the Office object model and the Open XML SDK, and the key benefits from using the SDK.  We’ll discuss the architecture of the Open XML SDK, and the roadmap for the future.  I’ll show the strongly typed document object model and its benefits.  This session will include lots of demos, showing you the range of possibilities that Open XML affords.

OFC401 - Developing Open XML Solutions using the Open XML SDK (November 13, 09:00 - 10:15)

This technical session builds on OFC206, showing how to put together solutions using the Open XML SDK and Language Integrated Query (LINQ).  For background, I’ll spend a few minutes presenting a number of the key LINQ concepts.  We’ll then use those constructs to query, modify, and construct documents.  You’ll see how easy LINQ makes it, provided you have the proper education.  We’ll write a query on a document using LINQ to XML – you will see how a very few lines of LINQ code can parse and interrogate a document in a variety of ways.  We’ll then move on to using the strongly typed document object model and the tools to build a comprehensive document construction application from scratch.

This session will be technical.  You will gain the most from this session if you understand generics.  You can benefit from this session if you don’t, but you may find certain parts of the code to be quite technical.

If you have the intention to learn about LINQ and functional programming, this session will provide some key insights into the relevant concepts.  In addition, I’ll provide links and resources so that you can further your education in these powerful techniques.  But understand that the focus of this talk will be the Open XML SDK.

I’ll be in Barcelona from November 10-14.  Attending sessions is fun, but I’d far rather meet with customers, partners, and other Microsoft employees than attend sessions.  I’d be happy to consult on document assembly solutions or the specifics of the Open XML standard.  Please feel free to contact me to set up some time (click the EMAIL link above).

Looking forward to seeing you there!
