It only reproes on some computers. After some digging, I found out that Internet cache is full on the dubious computer. I did as Microsoft say :), but that still didn't fix the problem. You also have to refresh the page or restart IE before you can save the picture.

But this has been a known problem for years, since IE 5.0, so why has there not been a fix for it?
When the cache is getting nearly full a background thread should remove the least recently access resources.
It should keep a minimum of 5% of the cache space free so that it never gets completely free.

How many people have had this problem in the last few years? How many have failed to find the solution and have given up? How long has this been a known issue?

re: What is a JPG file forced to be saved as BMP in IE?

You also won't be able to view source.

Can't believe they have never fixed it, I have had this problem since IE 6 was released.

re: What is a JPG file forced to be saved as BMP in IE?

Usually clearing your cache and cookies fixes it.
When I have seen it, it was a cache corruption issue, not a out of space issue.

re: What is a JPG file forced to be saved as BMP in IE?

Have to delete all offline files.

In some instances, I've had to close all instances of IE.

In some other instances, I've had to reboot the machine.

Use FireFox instead ;)

re: Why is a JPG file forced to be saved as BMP in IE?

Been looking for the cause and fix of this BMP save issue for some time.
