I agree with you said, but I have to laugh... a plain beige steel or plastic box that is 3' high sells itself? Hardly. They are ugly :) For decades everyone has said PCs were ugly, and the value was hidden. So in the early days people hooked TVs with video tapes up next to the machines. I remember Ingram Micro, Synnex and TechData (tier 1 channel distributors) giving away TVs so companies could do this in the late '80s and early '90s. Local retailers saved the day. The channel was established so well that by the late '90s discounters got the sale and retailers got upset and stopped selling the product. I mean stopped actively selling any product - the product just sat and as you said now has to sell itself. Those of us who kept selling them had to dress them up, so we imported aluminum cases to get that cool modern look, pulled off doors, custom painted them --- anything to make that ugly box seem attractive. So, I think what people are admitting today is that they don't like mass retail outlets. They do not fill the need and are unbending in their approach.

What is needed to increase sales beyond this year's projection? Activity. Help the groups who actively demonstrate product. First contact is still the primary channel - VARs, resellers, consultants, even garage resellers (over half of sales still happen this way).

How to sell Tablet PCs like hell ? Easy
get Apple designers. Since years, running Windows on Apple hardware would be a dream, looking at an apple laptop, always makes me ashamed to use my laptop next to a powerbook :(

Look how much they charge for an Ipod, still it sells like hell.
