How Much Does It Cost, or "Introducing the 2007 Microsoft Office System"

Over the past few months, I have been asked three specific questions repeatedly either via comments ore more often via email. 

One of them, "how do I sign up for the public beta", was one that I could answer (which is to register here).

Another one, which I couldn't answer until yesterday, was "how much will it cost?"

What changed yesterday?  Well, yesterday Office 12 became "the 2007 Microsoft Office System".  Along with the naming announcement, pricing and packaging information has been revealed, and you can find the details on the Office Preview web site.  Excel 12 is now "Microsoft Office Excel 2007".  (I will probably go with the "Excel 2007" in future posts.)

No doubt more people like me will be wondering how it is that some things that are in cheaper versions (from the left to right) are not in more expensive versions.

The logical diagram of versions and features should have a steadily increasing number of dots as you go to the versions to the right.

It's amazing to me why OneNote 2007 is only available in a student edition and the final very expensive edition for example. Even Excel has some odd holes.

My feeling is that this set of versions has been dreamt up by someone with too much time on their hands (coupled with no experience of newsgroup and other user support channels)! This is going to be a nightmare to remember and thus support.

Or to put it another way - it's a complete mess!

David, upgrade pricing is that based on upgrading from any previous version (like 2000) or the latest version (2003?)

Will all features you have talked about (i.e. Excel web services) be availible in any version that includes Excel?

Bruce, Excel Services is part of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (see http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/pricing.mspx).

David, Thanks but Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is "Available only through volume licensing; price not quoted"  Will this be available for Windows Server 2003?  What will the license issues be with Excel Web Services?

Excel Services will not be part of Windows SharePoint Services. It is part of Office SharePoint Server 2007 which does run on Windows Server 2003. Details on licensing will be available on the link above at some future point.

Tianwei, the marketing folks tell me you can take advantage of the Version Upgrade (VUP) if you own Office XP, 2000, 2003, as well as Microsoft Works Suite 2000-2006 and Works 6.0-8.5.
