As the name implies, this feature allows users to put icons in cells based on the values of the cell. These are in some ways similar to data bars and colour scales, so

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

Don't forget Smiley :), Straight :|, Frownie :( faces.

oh, and... just for Harlan... a special icon that blinks! ;)
re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

This sounds terrific, I will definitely use these features.

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

Hi David,

This function looks fantastic, much like the other new features in Excel '12'. That looks great. I'm not sure all of the icons represent an "obvious" message, for example, why is a down left-pointing arrow "better" or "worse" than a down right-pointing arrow?

But, the traffic lights, flags and moon phases look excellent.

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

Not as exciting as colour scales or data bars, but can probably come in handy.

Please ask the artwork guys to provide options that print well, and differ in more than just colour. The arrows and pies are great and will be used frequently, I'm sure - and the ones you've shown here look like they'll print well.

Crosses & check marks was the other icon set I immediately looked for, and the example in your picture looks a lot less printer-friendly than the arrows. Both will come out as circles in print, and look very similar. Solid check mark-shaped check marks would be good to have (such as the ones in the wingdings font, characters 00FB and 00FB).

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

Another plea for consideration for the colour-impaired. Inevitably almost every "dashboards" will have a few metrics unique enough that at times there is the need to manually "override" the system assigned categorizations. For example, for a growing portfolio, a negative net income might not be true "red" as long as it's less than the plan. So I wonder if Excel will make manual insert of icons (or manual overrides) possible. Of course come with that question is the ability afterwards to systemically sweep the sheet for spotting the manually created icons. I know I'm asking a lot yet this is so commonplace.

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

I can definitely see our application making use of this new feature. Glad you like what you see.

Jordan – Unfortunately, this time out, users will be limited to the set of icons we ship with Excel 12.

Andy – We have tried to assemble a range of icons that will handle a wide range of situations, but not all make sense in all situations. Arrows are commonly used to communicate trends.

Helen – We are going to make sure they print well, and thanks for your other feedback.

Stephen – We tried to make sure that some of the red/yellow/green had other visual cues (shape, characters). Is there something else you think we should do? Feel free to send me an email using the link at the top of the page.

Tianwei – If I am understanding correctly, I think the situation you are describing is a good example of where using a formula to specify the criteria for a conditional format is the appropriate choice – with formulas, you can specify these sorts of conditions. A very common example is from budgeting – if “actual” is more than 20% over “budget” turn the font red unless the difference between the two is less than $500 (in which case the variance is immaterial).
re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

David, what I was referring to is the ability to manually insert an icon to override the forumula driven icon. Let's say I apply an overall formula say if the value is negative then turn the red light on. But one of the cells in the array is negative but I need it to show yellow because this is an anticipated situation where negative values is normal. Instead of creating a separate formula for that cell, I'd want to temporarily place a yellow light in that cell for quick fix.

re: Wrapping up new visualizations – icon sets

Please make these icons print well.
