Electronic cards, purporting to be from a secret admirer, are propagating cyberspace in a scam that has already compromised the online bank accounts of Australian consumers.
The scheme exploits a flaw in Microsoft Windows's operating system to place spyware and a rootkit on consumers’ computers.
The attackers have been using greeting card services such as Blue Mountain and Yahoo! to send phishing emails to consumers, prompting them to click on a link to view the card.
