Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

In the slight chance you haven't seen this yet, Microsoft just released a Malicious Software Removal Tool targeting some of the most prevalent malicious software. For a list of the tool targets, check its official page.

The tool will be updated on the second Tuesday of every month. If you turn on Automatic Updates, you'll get the latest version automatically. Alternatively, you can always download it from Microsoft Download center.

I would strongly recommend you to run it at least once a month just to cover all your bases.

Update: This is different tool than the Microsoft Antispyware. The AntiSpyware is proactive tool that monitors constantly your system. The Malicious Software Removal Tool targets specific pevalent viruses and worms and scans and removes them.

My personal opinion is that this tool will be kept as a way to target specific known threats through Windows Updates. In other words - even if people choose not to run any antivirus and/or antispyware programs on their computers, there is a way for Microsoft to fight virus epidemics.

Btw, this tool is not an antivirus program. It's just a removal tool. You should still run antivirus and antispyware and proactively monitor your computer.

Okay, now I'm officially confused.

What's the difference between this and Microsoft Antispyware?

Why would you want to have two different tools for doing the same thing?

(If you're considering "malware" and "spyware" to be two different classes of software then you're using different definitions than I do).

Will MSAntiSpyware be subsumed into this in later versions? Or is it already?

After reading your update I think I understand the difference, but I'm still not sure I agree with it.

IMO, Microsoft Antispyware *should* be installed through Windows Update for everyone, automatically, once it leaves beta state. In today's climate, nobody should be without antispyware software. (I'd suggest changing the UI so that it runs invisibly until a threat is identified at which point it would use the standard Windows red shield icon in the systray - in other words, just like every other integrated part of Window's security UI).

I don't think it makes sense to say "we'll automatically protect you from some specific threats as long as you have Automatic Updates on, but you have to take proactive action to download a separate tool from us to protect yourself from all the others".

But I also think Microsoft should buy an antivirus manufacturer and bundle that software in the same way ("... you have to download a separate tool from one of these other ten vendors to protect yourself..."), so what do I know? ;)

I don't know. I have never used Network Associates "Stinger" tool. But from its description, it looks very similar.

So who determines what "malicious" software is?

Is Firefox "malicious" software?
