I-Mate K-Jam AKU2 Update : Done!

For the past week, I've been reading about the I-Mate K-Jam AKU2 update, and I have been itching to apply the update to *MY* little K-Jam.

Today, I had a meeting cancel on me, so I scored some bonus time, in which to make it so!

I grabbed the the new ROM which includes AKU2 with Direct Push E-mail from Club i-mate and ran the update.

I am now running the updated K-Jam and it feels so much better. It's snappier.  The Direct Push E-mail is really cool too.

Time now to go re-install some of my favorite apps - Egress, Pocket Sudoku, King Sol and Voice Command

So, the real question is whether there is a real benefit to having Direct Push turned on.  I say this for a couple of reasons:

1) Prior to Direct Push you just set ActiveSync to poll the server every X minutes.  If you wanted email that urgently you could poll every 5 mins.  Direct Push seemed to take about 2 minutes to retrieve the email after it appeared in my outlook inbox.

2) Direct Push does NOT work over a Wireless network.  This sux because I only sync over either my home or work wireless network as I rarely need to sync when I'm on the road.

3) Even with NO email being sent/received the cost for Direct Push has been estimated at aroudn 15Mb/month, which given the current cost for GPRS data makes it prohibitively expensive.

Given these factors I would be interested to know what the relative data cost is between using Direct Push and setting Active Sync to poll every X minutes.

I would also be interested to know what the plan is going forward for a real Blackberry killer - solution so far is just not good enough.

I don't know all the answers :)  But I have been using DirectPush for almost 6 months now, so some comments:

1.  DirectPush means you don't have to poll every 5 mins.  The device does a request to your Exchange Server then goes to sleep, for instance on my device a Kjam the heartbeat lasts as long as 45 mins.  I think your setup is misconfigured if Pocket Outlook takes 2 mins before you get email that has already appeared on your desktop.  For instance my device gets it around 30 secs to a minute _before_ it appears in my Outlook 2003 inbox (in Cache mode)  Check the firewall timeout settings in front of the Exchange FE server, and bump it up to 30mins or even longer.  Thats about the only config there is to do to drop Exchange SP2 Direct Push in.

2.  True, Direct Push is not supported over WiFi, it is designed to work over Wireless WAN like a GPRS network.  Of course you can still synch over WiFi, just that DirectPush doesn't work

3.  It really depends on what the mobile operator in the country does with their billing.  The challenge is that some operators have a minimum bill increment on GPRS – that is that after a certain period they bill a minimum charge.  Here in NZ I believe with Vodafone it is 10kb.  Certainly the expected overhead for DirectPush shouldn't be as high as 15MB/month.  The other factor is how much mail you are doing and how long the Heart Beat Interval can last for without being torn down by the mobile operator or corporate network where your Exchange server is.

Frank, glad it's working for ya. Very satisfying when something you want/need actually works. Personally I've no need for push email and have had AS sync on BT for a while (when I want it).

However I'm still in the dark as to whether WM5 will auto-answer an incoming call on a BT haedset WITHOUT pressing a button. (ref:http://blogs.msdn.com/frankarr/archive/2006/01/17/513622.aspx#515138)

Hey Dave

I have good news now

Following my update to AKU2, I have subsedquently re-paired my bt headset, re-installed voice command

AND

I have set the phone to auto pickup after 1 rin

AND

It answers

AND

It is picked up by my Bluetooth headset

No buttons were pressed to answer the call

w00t!!!!

None of our K-JAMs (upgraded of course) will do Direct Push with our Exchange server, but our SP5 will! The K-JAMs do not offer the 'As Items Arrive' option in ActiveSync but the SP5 does. What could be wrong?

that sounds weird - are you sure they are upgraded?

have you checked in thes comms manager app and made sure that direct push is activated
