WMP 11 : It Just Rocks

I grabbed the beta of Windows Media Player 11 last night and gave it a spin.

Download Windows Media Player 11 Beta

It just looks beautiful. The library is just so useful now, and creating playlists is a piece of cake!

Even the reviews in the press are positive :

I still remember launching Windows Media Player 7 way back in 2000. Things have definitely changed since then!

Now I need to get my hands on to an iRiver Clix

I dunno Frank. I'm all for the MS Koolaide, as you know, but I've never been a fan of media player.

I installed the beta this morning, and I can't see a difference between 11 and 10 (hell, or 9) except for how the UI looks - this one definately looks like a Vista app, but otherwise it's awkward to use.

Me, I think I'll stick with winamp :) I did a test - the memory footprint of both players when they are both playing an mp3 is quite small, but winamp is still less (almost half) what media player uses, and the cpu usage just to play a song is higher in media player too.

I'm picky about that *laughs*

I recently purchased a prepaid music "voucher" from Dick Smith (www.ripit.com.au) and it worked alright. It used WMA to sync with my iRiver T10. I liked how it allowed for prepaid purchase at stores.

why do you think they STILL don't have a podcast directory? WTF? Now they are only 12 months behind iTunes.

# Windows Media Centre

Does this update do anything for MCE2005's atrocious performance when accessing music? I noticed that the CNET review referred to WMPs improvement in that area, noting that 10K+ MP3 libraries are now the norm rather than the exception. If WMP11 is installed, does MCE use its code in place of WMP10s?

WMP11 looks great and plays music fine, but for me playing a video hung it. The video plays, while WMP11 refuses to respond to commands and uses up 50% of CPU. Might be because of some addons, but its hard to find out. No error message. I had to kill it over and over until I gave up and uninstalled it.
