Got My Latest Gadget : iRiver Clix

I sent my dear wife down to the local DSE on a errand for me today.

When she got to the store, the guys there were busy unpacking a bunch of boxes and weren't ready to sell this to her and told her to come back in a few hours! A customer with money ready to buy and the sales dudes saying go away. Doesn't seem right.

Anyways, she went down to get me this

My kids are now fighting me for it.

It's a wonderful little device. Kudos to all involved.

Tip o'the hat to Sean Alexander for alerting me to it's local availability

It's good that it supports the Ogg file type (and presumably the Vorbis codec), but unfortunate that it doesn't support the Theora codec for video, since pretty much every other video codec is patent-encumbered.

2GB?

A dock with line out but no video out?

QVGA display?

No USB2.0 Host mode?

I think they should have considered offering two or three different memory and screen configurations and a mobile phone module add on.

The fact that the device has a touch screen and Flash Lite 2.0 support is great. QVGA only screen is a let down in my opinon.

Still, I'll pick one up have a playround when the price drops to $200 in a few months.

Frank, I picked up one from DSE myself yesterday. Walked in said I wants my precious and away I went.

The big selling point for me was the built in FM Radio as I ride a motorbike it is good to have music and radio.

Another feature is the built in mic for recording, which is great if you have a meeting and you don't want to write exhaustive notes, you can just review after.

I have a iRiver 320 and the main problem with it is that it doesn't do mp4 videos that most Video Podcasts are in these days. I was close to having a way of coverting them but never got it 100% implemented.

Yeah, mp4 videos are very annoying. Can the latest version of VLC play them? If so, try going to File->Wizard... it's a bit hidden, but it can convert it to other codecs. I recommend the Vorbis and Theora codecs.

There needs to be a concerted push against proprietary file formats, codecs, and protocols. Microsoft really needs to lead the way, here.

James, do you really think Microsoft (aka the kings of proprietary formats) will lead the way on going open standards?

MS has spent way to much R&D and marketing money on getting WMF and Windows Media technology out into the maket place. I can only understand to well why they wouldn't want to embrance open standards.

Tom, that's really a question for frankarr...

(no, I don't seriously think that - but I do think that they should, and I think proprietary standards are always anti-competitive)

Thanks for the the Tip o' the hat Frank :).  James- we helped iRiver make sure properly encoded MP4 files will sync, even with Windows Media Player 11 and did the deals to get MP3 encoding into the player.  Choice is a good thing.  iRiver has a link to additional tools for compressing video (e.g. iriverter) I'll try to do a post on this soon.

FWIW: The SOC (System on a Chip) the Clix is based on doesn't support WMV. ;)

I strongly agree that choice is a good thing. That's why file formats, codecs, and protocols that anyone is allowed to implement (without needing to license software patents) are extremely important. It is also why everyone should make a concerted effort to reject any proprietary file formats, codecs, or protocols.

When a software developer can be sued just for implementing a media player that plays MPEG files, or WMV files, innovation suffers. It's increasingly the case that innovation comes from small companies that can't afford to license patents. Having accepted formats that can be implemented without licensing patents is good for everyone except companies that would rather avoid competition.
