And everything under the sun is in tune

My friend in seat 23d wants a tablet…

I am on the plane (again) and traveling down to lovely San Francisco (again) this time to do some talks with some of my favorite folks – the press… Anyway, I am sitting next to a gentlemen who’s been furiously working on crossword puzzles out of a book which from all appearances is quite old.

I asked him if he likes those crossword puzzles and he said “Yes, I do”. So, I asked if he uses computers on any type of regular basis. He said “no, not since I retired”, which was probably 10 years ago based on my assessment. I just had to do it, I pulled out my Motion 1400 with the cool View Anywhere screen and fired up the NY Times crossword puzzle and handed it to him. At first he looked intimidated, I told him it’s a Tablet PC, use the Pen to write and the eraser to erase. Just go ahead and play.

Ok, so that’s was the last time I saw my tablet during the flight. He picked it up and starting working the puzzle, correct answers too. Within minutes he was flipping the pen around erasing his mistakes – just amazing.

Tablets will open new opportunities, they will get you new customers and they will become mainstream computing devices. My friend in seat 23d who now wants a Tablet PC has verified this for me once again…

Funny you should mention that. I was doing the NYT crossword and a friend came over. I had clone maybe 5%. He then went onto complete it. I lost him for the afternoon. I did may mind too much. I am hopeless at crosswords.

I know lots of people that *want* a Tablet PC, but very few of them actually follow up and get one. All with the same reasons too -- too expensive for the mediocre performance. And the ones that do get them never use them as tablets.

Now there's this shift to focus on games on the tablet. Yet the multimedia capabilities on these devices stink. The hardware buttons are useless for games, the video hardware is DOG slow in anything other than primary landscape (and mediocre at best), and the sound is crappy. All of these things have good reasons (size, weight, speaker interference with stylus) but they still exist.

In your example above, the guy could have just as easily bought a $3 TV Guide and a pencil. The public needs to see real world benefits of this platform.

Alex, the NYT Power toy will cache your current game so you can play when you’re not connected.

Josh, the new Tablet hardware coming out of the OEM’s is quite amazing. The Dothan chips and 7200 rpm drives with 2 gb of ram are incredible performers, probably faster then most desktops out there today. Hold on tight it’s only getting better.

As for our Game SDK I quite honestly don’t agree with your assessment but I do appreciate your candid feedback. The Tablet’s natural form of input will lend it self quite nicely to the casual game experience.

I'm sure there are top of the line tablets that outperform some of the bottom of the line desktops for sale, but the fact is, I can buy a laptop that offers twice as much as the top of the line tablet for the same, or less, dollar amount.

Anyway about games, I'm not sure what the strategy is, but it won't help move units or attract developers.

Have you seen the Nintendo DS? Touch screen, dual screens, speech/stylus input, wifi, bluetooth, and most importantly... support from major game developers. But all for $150 and fits in the palm of your hand. I wanna play games on this, not on my $2500 tablet.
