Know a good book on performance?
If you know a good book or more on performance, please recommend.
I'm aware of the following books which have some topics related to software performance:
- Dov Bulka, David Mayhew, Efficient C++: Performance Programming Techniques, 2000. This may be the best book on C++ performance on the market today. But the central theme of the book seems to be focused the statement that C++ programs can be as efficient as C program.
- Steve Heller, Efficient C/C++ Programming, 2nd edition, 1995. Interesting reading about programmers' performance concerns and solutions a decade ago.
- Connie U. Smith, Lloyd G. Williams, Performance Solutions: A Practical Guide to Creating Responsive, Scalable Software, 2002. The book on Software Performance Engineering (SPE). I would suggest every manager, program manager to read it. But software design engineers would like to read something deeper.
- Scott Meyers, Effective C++, 2nd edition, 1998. Scott's book is always a pleasure to read. Some suggestions have positive performance impact, for example Item 21: use const whenever possible.
- Scott Meyers, More Effective C++, 1996. Items 16 to 24 are grouped under a section named Efficiency.
- John Robbins, Debugging Applications for .NET, 2003. Debugging and performance tuning need some of the same low-level techiniques. Chapter 19 on working set optimization is purely for performance.
- Randall Hyde, Write Greate Code I: Understanding the Machine, 2004. Good introduction to how modern CPU works. If you do not read Intel/AMD manuals, read this.
- Randall Hyde, Write Greate Code II: Thinking Low-level, Write Hight-Level, 2006. Moving up to how C is translated to machine code. Still waiting for the book to be released.
