IEEE and ACM availability of Windows 7 from MSDNAA

The MSDN Academic Alliance program was established seven years ago as a membership service to provide access to MS platform and development tools to STEM departments at educational institutions throughout the world. In 2008, Microsoft extended availability of MSDN AA to organizations such as IEEE and ACM whose mission was to support the educational and professional development of students in technical disciplines.

The release of Windows 7 through these subscriptions triggered an unanticipated situation that put the program at risk: We saw signs that non-students were joining ACM and IEEE as student members solely to obtain Windows 7 through MSDN AA. This infringed on the intent of the program and the conditions of the MSDN AA license. As a result, we decided to remove Windows 7 from the association MSDN AA memberships while we evaluate approaches to ensure that the offering is reaching only the target audience: students and educators. While we expect to have a final position on the matter resolved in the near future, we cannot guarantee that Windows 7 will be available through this associations due to the complexity of student enrollment verification. We recommend the technical students and educators use their institutional and department MSDN AA subscription to obtain Windows 7. Find your department’s MSDNAA availability at http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx (Once you find your school/department, click on the ‘Get Software’ link)

Background: The MSDN Academic Alliance program was established seven years ago as a membership service to provide access to MS platform and development tools to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) departments at educational institutions throughout the world. Through the program, 500+ professional-level Microsoft developer and design software products and tools are available to students, faculty and labs in these departments with a license for teaching/learning and research (non-commercial) purposes.

MSDN AA is available at over 20,000 departments world-wide and over 5000 departments in US.  All of these institutions do include Windows 7 professional as part of their MSDNAA membership and are making Windows 7 Pro available to students at no cost. Please contact your school/department to encourage them to use MSDNAA and make Windows 7 available to all eligible students.

If your school/department does not have MSDN AA (i.e. not listed at http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx), encourage them to sign-up for MSDNAA membership at http://msdnaa.net

If your school/department has MSDNAA, check if Windows 7 Professional edition is available for student download - http://blogs.msdn.com/gautam/archive/2009/08/13/making-windows-7-available-to-students.aspx. This post also lists what the MSDNAA admin at your department has to do to make Windows 7 available to students via ELMS download center.

If you have access to Windows 7 from MSDNAA and want information on downloading and installing it, refer to http://blogs.msdn.com/gautam/archive/2008/07/19/how-to-download-and-install-microsoft-software-from-msdn-aa.aspx

If you still have questions about MSDNAA availability of Windows 7 Professional at your school/department, please contact msdnaa@microsoft.com or call 866-643-9421

Responding to other questions raised:

  • Windows 7 Professional is included in MSDNAA for student distribution – this is the final version and not RC. If you are seeing RC in your MSDNAA- ELMS, contact your administrator to get them to make Windows 7 Pro available to students. This is also the full version and not an upgrade offer, so you can install it on a clean machine, by burning the ISO image onto a DVD (image is too big for a CD).
  • Windows 7 Enterprise is included in MSDNAA for lab installs and is not intended for student distribution. (I have passed along the student concerns about this to the MSDNAA program owners at Microsoft and will make a post when a decision is made)
  • Students and Faculty in the STEM (science, engineering, Technology, math) departments are eligible for Windows 7 and all 500+ of MSDNAA software products and tools.
  • By default each eligible student (and faculty) gets one license key to install any MSDNAA software (including Windows 7) on one PC. MSDNAA does not restrict a student to only one license key and provides your local department Administrator with the ability to distribute additional license keys, at their discretion – contact your admin if you have another PC you want to install MSDNAA software on.
  • If you are not a STEM student, you can still download MS design and development tools at no cost at https://www.dreamspark.com, although this does not include Windows 7.

Microsoft Surface SDK in MSDN Academic Alliance

The Microsoft Surface SDK 1.0 SP1 Workstation Edition (x86) along with the Microsoft Surface User Experience Guidelines documentation is available in MSDN Academic Alliance and is broadly distributable to students via MSDNAA ELMS.

The below snapshot of my ELMS download center (example: http://msdn04.e-academy.com/ms_cdhs) shows the Surface SDK 1.0 and Windows 7 Professional edition available for student distribution.image

Microsoft Surface (http://www.microsoft.com/surface/) is  a revolutionary multi-touch computer that responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in a simple and intuitive way. With a large, horizontal user interface, Surface offers a unique gathering place where multiple users can collaboratively and simultaneously interact with data and each other.

Microsoft Surface SDK Workstation Edition enables schools to engage with this multi-touch, multi-user experience. Students and faculty can develop and test Surface applications on every computer in the lab by running the Surface Simulator included in the Surface SDK.  The Surface Simulator enables you to run Surface applications in a full Surface-like environment, including Launcher. When you use Surface Simulator, you use mice to simulate finger and object contacts. For more information about Surface Simulator, see the "Surface Simulator" section in the Surface SDK documentation.

Making Windows 7 available to Students from their school/department download centers

Windows 7 Client Retail Professional Edition English (x86 and x64) and Windows 7 Enterprise Edition English (x86 and x64) are available in MSDN Academic Alliance since August 6th for download by MSDN AA Administrators.  Today (Aug 13), Windows 7 Client Retail Professional Edition English (x86 and x64) are available in ELMS (e-academy License Management System) that distributes the software to students. Enterprise editions of Windows 7 are for lab installs and so are not in ELMS.

See the snapshot of my ELMS download center with Windows 7 Professional (x86) highlighted below. Note that Windows 7 Professional is shown in the dropdown list as well as the box-shot below – either location is valid for obtaining the software.

image

MSDN AA members using the ELMS download as a distribution mechanism (“Hosted ELMS”) need their MSDN AA Program Administrator managing their school/department ELMS site  to enable Windows 7 at their local school/department, thereby making it available to all members at their school/department for download. ( I just  enabled it on my ELMS site).

The process to enable Windows 7 for ELMS download:

  1. Your MSDNAA-ELMS Program Administrator logs into the school/department’s ELMS site (example: http://msdn04.e-academy.com/ms_cdhs)
  2. Clicks on ‘Product Management’, ‘Rapid Setup’ and ‘Configure Hosted ELMS now’
  3. Checks the box against Windows 7 Client Retail Professional Edition English x86 and clicks on ‘Enable All’  (or ‘Enable Selected’)

That’s it – this makes the Windows 7 Professional x86 available in the dropdown as shown above (a couple of more steps makes the box shot as well).

Students can then download Windows 7 from their school/department ELMS download servers (where they have membership accounts).

If you have additional questions, contact your MSDNAA Program Administrator by clicking on the ‘Support’ tab of your school/department ELMS download center and looking for the contact information shared by your Program Administrator.

image

If you do not know your school/department's MSDNAA-ELMS download site, search for it at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/academic/dd861349.aspx and click on the "Get Software" link against your department.

Which one to get - MSDN or TechNet?

I was  just asked the  question -  which one to  get MSDN  or TechNet  subscription?

Both MSDN and TechNet  subscriptions include  Microsoft  software that  is licensed per  user.  MSDN Premium and TechNet Plus contain roughly the same software titles, though TechNet Plus does not include any Visual Studio or Expression products.

TechNet Plus subscriptions also include eLearning and other resources for IT Professionals.

Both MSDN and TechNet Plus include Managed Newsgroups, Online Concierge, and Technical Support Incidents (2 incidents for TechNet Plus, MSDN Operating Systems, and MSDN Professional; 4 incidents for MSDN Premium).

The software provided with an MSDN Subscription is for design, development, testing, and demonstration of applications in a non-production environment.

The software provided with TechNet Plus subscriptions is for evaluation purposes only,

  • to understand features to make usage, deployment or purchase recommendations or decisions
  • Use Microsoft software with 3rd party applications to make usage, deployment or purchase recommendations or decisions on the Microsoft software
  • Become familiar and keep up to date with the latest Microsoft software to support internal or external clients using or deploying the software.

DreamSpark: How to get Verified for the Microsoft Dreamspark software in US?

All Students at all accredited higher education institutions in US are eligible for DreamSpark at  https://www.dreamspark.com. There is no specific work necessary on the school's part to 'enroll'.

Given that there is No single method of verifying a student status across all higher-ed institutions in the US, there are a number of mechanism that DreamSpark uses:

  1. For Universities that are in the InCommon federation and implement the Shibboleth protocol, the verification is done by the school
  2. For students who are members of 'International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
    • student submits their name and ISIC ID #
  3. National Students Clearing house verification
    • Student submits their name, school name and DOB
  4. manual verification
    • student submits their name, email and student ID/Tuition receipt

Even though not all schools are listed on the DreamSpark site, all higher-ed students from all US  schools use the mechanisms 2,3,4 listed above to get their DreamSpark software.

On the DreamSpark site (at https://www.dreamspark.com/wayf/wayf.aspx) just below the list of schools is the following -- click on the “Learn More” button to get verified through JourneyEd http://www.journeyed.com/MSTools.

image

So, No your school does not have to be listed on the DreamSpark site for a higher-ed student in US to get the DreamSpark software just click on the “Learn More” button  it to get verified as a student.

How to get XNA Creator’s Club Academic Memberships from MSDNAA

XNA Game studio 3.0 is now part of MSDNAA and is also available in ELMS for  students, faculty and  lab machines. With just the XNA  Game Studio 3.0youcan create games for Windows or Zune.

XNA Creator’s Club membership is however needed to create games for the Xbox 360, to release Xbox 360 games to Community Games on Xbox LIVE, (or to peer-review submitted games). See http://creators.xna.com/en-US/faq#anchor_1_1 for additional details on XNA Creator’s Club.

In MSDNA-ELMS, a free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription is included for use by students, faculty and labs.

A couple of important points about the free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription in ELMS.

  1. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription allows you to create games for the Xbox 360
  2. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription will NOT give you access to premium content or services on the XNA Creators Club Online web site, including the ability to submit or peer review community games.
  3. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription is only available (currently) in ELMS. It  is not available if you only have MSDNAA, without the ELMS  distribution mechanism. (If you already have MSDNAA,you can sign-up for ELMS for free at http://www.e-academy.com/MSDNAA_RequestForm_main.cfm).
  4. There is no LabKey or Volume License for XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription. If your school has a lab with 20 XBoxes, work with your MSDNAA program Admin to order and download 20 XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription codes for each of the  lab XBoxes.

If you still have questions or run into any problems, call MSDNAA-ELMS support at 888-396-1447.

If your STEM-D department or student club is not a member of MSDNAA, do ask them to sign-up at http://msdnaa.net.

How to Download and Install DreamSpark Software

Microsoft software from DreamSpark comes packaged in large, single files with .ISO or .IMG extensions. These files are “images” (exact copies) of the CD or DVD media on which the software would be shipped. (The name ISO refers to the standardized file format used for disc images.)

Since Microsoft software from DreamSpark often comes packaged in large ISO files (with file sizes on the order of gigabytes), downloading from the server with no download management system may cause your download to fail with no way to resume it. You may have experienced this if your connection timed out or if you ran out of disk space during a large download.

To address this issue, DreamSpark recommends the use of the Akamai Download Manager to steadily deliver the software to your computer. In the event that your connection to the server is reset, the progress you made on the download will not be lost.

Tip: If you have an external hard drive, download the large ISO images to it to conserve valuable disk space on your PC.

Akamai Download Manager

If you are using Internet Explorer, you will be able to install this tool as an ActiveX control on the way to downloading the software.

IMPORTANT: If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer (including Netscape, Firefox, Opera, and others) you will need to manually install the Download Manager tool.

Now that Akamai Download Manager is installed, you can download software from DreamSpark.

WINDOWS VISTA USERS
If you are using Windows Vista, the built-in User Account Control feature will not allow you to download directly into system-owned folders. This means you must create your own directory for Download Manager DreamSpark downloads.

When your download is complete, you will have the ISO file to deal with. At this point, you have two options: mount the image, or burn it to a CD or DVD.

Installing Software from ISO Images

Option 1: Burning a Disc

If you need to create a bootable disc, or just want to create a “hard copy” of the software you’ve downloaded, it is a good idea to burn the image to disc.

Depending on the size of the file, you can use a CD or a DVD. Most software available through DreamSpark is too large to fit on a CD, so using blank DVDs is good practice.

You need the following items to burn the ISO image to a disc:

    • A CD/DVD drive capable of writing DVDs (look for a DVD/R or DVD/RW symbol)
    • A blank, writeable DVD compatible with your DVD writer
    • A software program capable of burning a disc from an image file

Most CD / DVD authoring programs provide the capability to burn a disc from an image.

Some freeware tools are available, such as ISO Recorder. Manufacturers of popular programs with this capability include Nero and Roxio.

A list of other programs for managing ISO files can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image

Using ISO Recorder to burn an image to disc

ISO Recorder is not a program you can launch, but an extension to the Windows shell. It allows you to right-click on an ISO image and choose Copy Image to CD, as shown below:

Selecting Copy image to CD will display a dialog titled CD Recording Wizard (or DVD Recording Wizard if it is a DVD ISO and you are running Vista). You can accept the defaults here and choose Next. Within a few minutes, your CD will be done!

Using Nero 7 Ultra Edition to burn an image to disc
  1. Start Nero Burning ROM by navigating to Start menu | Program Files | Nero 7 Ultra Edition | Data | Nero Burning ROM…
  2. On the New Compilation screen, press Cancel.
  3. From the Recorder menu, choose Burn Image…
  4. Browse to the ISO or IMG file you downloaded from MSDNAA and click Open.
  5. Click Burn to start the burn process.
Voila! A Disc Copy of the Software

Now that you’ve burned your ISO to a DVD, you can treat it as if you bought the software in the store. Just insert it into your DVD drive and install as you would any other program.

Tip: By using the Burn ISO Image feature of your DVD authoring software, you can create bootable discs without worrying about special settings (in the case of operating systems, for example).

Option 2: Mounting the ISO Image

If you don’t want to go to the trouble of burning a disc, you can mount the ISO image using third-party tools.

IF YOU DOWNLOADED AN OPERATING SYSTEM…

… such as Windows Vista, XP, Server, etc., do not attempt to mount the image in your current operating system to install it. A mounted drive is “remembered” by the operating system and the mounting tools, but will not exist between system reboots.

If you are trying to install an operating system, always burn a DVD and make sure the BIOS is configured to attempt to boot from the DVD drive as part of the boot sequence.

Mounting is the process of temporarily creating a virtual drive on your computer with the contents of the ISO package loaded in it, as if you had inserted a DVD into your existing DVD drive. Third-party tools are required to mount an ISO image. Most common CD and DVD authoring tools will allow you to mount an ISO image, and many freeware utilities are available as well (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image)

Daemon Tools is a free and popular tool that allows you to mount ISO images. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php

Microsoft also has a free tool that you can use to mount an ISO image, available at the link below.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe

Using DAEMON Tools

Follow these steps to mount an image using DAEMON tools.

  1. Download DAEMON Tools for your current operating system from the following link:
    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php
  2. Install DAEMON Tools. A system reboot will be required to set up the virtual disc environment.
  3. Reboot your computer when prompted to do so.
  4. DAEMON Tools installation will continue after your operating system starts up. You may receive some warnings notifying you that the setup is trying to continue. Allow the setup to continue.
  5. Choose the options you want to install. You need the core files and the shortcuts. The Search Bar is optional advertising which you can safely avoid installing.
  6. From now on, you will be able to mount ISO images by right-clicking the DAEMON Tools icon in your taskbar and following this menu sequence:
Virtual CD/DVD ROM | Device 0: [Letter:] | Mount image
Notice what drive letter you are mounting to.
  7. This will bring up a dialog box allowing you to browse to and open image files. Select the .ISO or .IMG file you downloaded from MSDNAA and click Open to mount the image.
  8. You can now access the image as if it were a CD or DVD by going to My Computer (or Computer in Vista) and double-clicking, auto-running, or exploring the contents of the virtual drive (the drive letter is the same as the one you noted above).
Running Software from a Mounted ISO Image

Once your ISO file is mounted, you will see a new drive show up in your My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista) pane. You can interact with this virtual drive as if you had a CD loaded in it – by right clicking it and choosing AutoPlay, or by Exploring it and choosing Setup.exe, and so forth.

When installing the software, make sure to follow any instructions on the virtual CD, especially readme files.
