Dreamspark US with simplified Student Enrollment Verification

DreamSpark V2 for US has launched yesterday, June 15. It simplifies the enrollment verification system for higher-Ed students in US.

The existing verification methods continue to work -  a) Shibboleth-based verification by Universities (for Universities that are part of the InCommon federation)  and  b) Live@edu domain based verification (for Schools that use Live@edu).

Higher-Ed student enrollment Verification process for US DreamSpark™ v2?

  1. On https://www.dreamspark.com/ sign-into LiveID.
  2. Select product and Click on ‘Verify’.
  3. Select Continent, Country, State (and optionally the City)
  4. Select your School and hit Continue
    • We have over 5000 schools listed and the verification proceeds based on the school selected.
    • If a user cannot find their school (i.e. school is not listed), the  “Couldn’t get Verified” section has a  “Learn More” button that redirects them to a “Contact US” page where the user provides the name of the missing School so we can get it added to the list of 5000 schools.
  5. Submit Name, Date of Birth and school provided .edu email address (i.e. an email address that ends in  .edu).  (We use this information to verify student enrollment status with National Student Clearinghouse.)
  6. An activation email is sent to the .edu  email address provided with a 5x5 access code that when entered at https://www.dreamspark.com/Activate/ sets up 12 months of access to Dreamspark software downloads.

Support for Dreamspark can be reached at https://support.microsoft.com/contactus/emailcontact.aspx?scid=sw;en;1333&WS=DreamSparkCollege .

Which one to get - MSDN or TechNet?

I was  just asked the  question -  which one to  get MSDN  or TechNet  subscription?

Both MSDN and TechNet  subscriptions include  Microsoft  software that  is licensed per  user.  MSDN Premium and TechNet Plus contain roughly the same software titles, though TechNet Plus does not include any Visual Studio or Expression products.

TechNet Plus subscriptions also include eLearning and other resources for IT Professionals.

Both MSDN and TechNet Plus include Managed Newsgroups, Online Concierge, and Technical Support Incidents (2 incidents for TechNet Plus, MSDN Operating Systems, and MSDN Professional; 4 incidents for MSDN Premium).

The software provided with an MSDN Subscription is for design, development, testing, and demonstration of applications in a non-production environment.

The software provided with TechNet Plus subscriptions is for evaluation purposes only,

  • to understand features to make usage, deployment or purchase recommendations or decisions
  • Use Microsoft software with 3rd party applications to make usage, deployment or purchase recommendations or decisions on the Microsoft software
  • Become familiar and keep up to date with the latest Microsoft software to support internal or external clients using or deploying the software.

DreamSpark: How to get Verified for the Microsoft Dreamspark software in US?

All Students at all accredited higher education institutions in US are eligible for DreamSpark at  https://www.dreamspark.com. There is no specific work necessary on the school's part to 'enroll'.

Given that there is No single method of verifying a student status across all higher-ed institutions in the US, there are a number of mechanism that DreamSpark uses:

  1. For Universities that are in the InCommon federation and implement the Shibboleth protocol, the verification is done by the school
  2. For students who are members of 'International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
    • student submits their name and ISIC ID #
  3. National Students Clearing house verification
    • Student submits their name, school name and DOB
  4. manual verification
    • student submits their name, email and student ID/Tuition receipt

Even though not all schools are listed on the DreamSpark site, all higher-ed students from all US  schools use the mechanisms 2,3,4 listed above to get their DreamSpark software.

On the DreamSpark site (at https://www.dreamspark.com/wayf/wayf.aspx) just below the list of schools is the following -- click on the “Learn More” button to get verified through JourneyEd http://www.journeyed.com/MSTools.

How to get XNA Creator’s Club Academic Memberships from MSDNAA

XNA Game studio 3.0 is now part of MSDNAA and is also available in ELMS for  students, faculty and  lab machines. With just the XNA  Game Studio 3.0youcan create games for Windows or Zune.

XNA Creator’s Club membership is however needed to create games for the Xbox 360, to release Xbox 360 games to Community Games on Xbox LIVE, (or to peer-review submitted games). See http://creators.xna.com/en-US/faq#anchor_1_1 for additional details on XNA Creator’s Club.

In MSDNA-ELMS, a free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription is included for use by students, faculty and labs.

A couple of important points about the free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription in ELMS.

  1. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription allows you to create games for the Xbox 360
  2. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription will NOT give you access to premium content or services on the XNA Creators Club Online web site, including the ability to submit or peer review community games.
  3. The free XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription is only available (currently) in ELMS. It  is not available if you only have MSDNAA, without the ELMS  distribution mechanism. (If you already have MSDNAA,you can sign-up for ELMS for free at http://www.e-academy.com/MSDNAA_RequestForm_main.cfm).
  4. There is no LabKey or Volume License for XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription. If your school has a lab with 20 XBoxes, work with your MSDNAA program Admin to order and download 20 XNA Creators Club 12-Month Student Trial Subscription codes for each of the  lab XBoxes.

If you still have questions or run into any problems, call MSDNAA-ELMS support at 888-396-1447.

If your STEM-D department or student club is not a member of MSDNAA, do ask them to sign-up at http://msdnaa.net.

How to Download and Install DreamSpark Software

Microsoft software from DreamSpark comes packaged in large, single files with .ISO or .IMG extensions. These files are “images” (exact copies) of the CD or DVD media on which the software would be shipped. (The name ISO refers to the standardized file format used for disc images.)

Since Microsoft software from DreamSpark often comes packaged in large ISO files (with file sizes on the order of gigabytes), downloading from the server with no download management system may cause your download to fail with no way to resume it. You may have experienced this if your connection timed out or if you ran out of disk space during a large download.

To address this issue, DreamSpark recommends the use of the Akamai Download Manager to steadily deliver the software to your computer. In the event that your connection to the server is reset, the progress you made on the download will not be lost.

Tip: If you have an external hard drive, download the large ISO images to it to conserve valuable disk space on your PC.

Akamai Download Manager

If you are using Internet Explorer, you will be able to install this tool as an ActiveX control on the way to downloading the software.

IMPORTANT: If you are using a browser other than Internet Explorer (including Netscape, Firefox, Opera, and others) you will need to manually install the Download Manager tool.

Now that Akamai Download Manager is installed, you can download software from DreamSpark.

WINDOWS VISTA USERS
If you are using Windows Vista, the built-in User Account Control feature will not allow you to download directly into system-owned folders. This means you must create your own directory for Download Manager DreamSpark downloads.

When your download is complete, you will have the ISO file to deal with. At this point, you have two options: mount the image, or burn it to a CD or DVD.

Installing Software from ISO Images

Option 1: Burning a Disc

If you need to create a bootable disc, or just want to create a “hard copy” of the software you’ve downloaded, it is a good idea to burn the image to disc.

Depending on the size of the file, you can use a CD or a DVD. Most software available through DreamSpark is too large to fit on a CD, so using blank DVDs is good practice.

You need the following items to burn the ISO image to a disc:

    • A CD/DVD drive capable of writing DVDs (look for a DVD/R or DVD/RW symbol)
    • A blank, writeable DVD compatible with your DVD writer
    • A software program capable of burning a disc from an image file

Most CD / DVD authoring programs provide the capability to burn a disc from an image.

Some freeware tools are available, such as ISO Recorder. Manufacturers of popular programs with this capability include Nero and Roxio.

A list of other programs for managing ISO files can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image

Using ISO Recorder to burn an image to disc

ISO Recorder is not a program you can launch, but an extension to the Windows shell. It allows you to right-click on an ISO image and choose Copy Image to CD, as shown below:

Selecting Copy image to CD will display a dialog titled CD Recording Wizard (or DVD Recording Wizard if it is a DVD ISO and you are running Vista). You can accept the defaults here and choose Next. Within a few minutes, your CD will be done!

Using Nero 7 Ultra Edition to burn an image to disc
  1. Start Nero Burning ROM by navigating to Start menu | Program Files | Nero 7 Ultra Edition | Data | Nero Burning ROM…
  2. On the New Compilation screen, press Cancel.
  3. From the Recorder menu, choose Burn Image…
  4. Browse to the ISO or IMG file you downloaded from MSDNAA and click Open.
  5. Click Burn to start the burn process.
Voila! A Disc Copy of the Software

Now that you’ve burned your ISO to a DVD, you can treat it as if you bought the software in the store. Just insert it into your DVD drive and install as you would any other program.

Tip: By using the Burn ISO Image feature of your DVD authoring software, you can create bootable discs without worrying about special settings (in the case of operating systems, for example).

Option 2: Mounting the ISO Image

If you don’t want to go to the trouble of burning a disc, you can mount the ISO image using third-party tools.

IF YOU DOWNLOADED AN OPERATING SYSTEM…

… such as Windows Vista, XP, Server, etc., do not attempt to mount the image in your current operating system to install it. A mounted drive is “remembered” by the operating system and the mounting tools, but will not exist between system reboots.

If you are trying to install an operating system, always burn a DVD and make sure the BIOS is configured to attempt to boot from the DVD drive as part of the boot sequence.

Mounting is the process of temporarily creating a virtual drive on your computer with the contents of the ISO package loaded in it, as if you had inserted a DVD into your existing DVD drive. Third-party tools are required to mount an ISO image. Most common CD and DVD authoring tools will allow you to mount an ISO image, and many freeware utilities are available as well (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image)

Daemon Tools is a free and popular tool that allows you to mount ISO images. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php

Microsoft also has a free tool that you can use to mount an ISO image, available at the link below.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe

Using DAEMON Tools

Follow these steps to mount an image using DAEMON tools.

  1. Download DAEMON Tools for your current operating system from the following link:
    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php
  2. Install DAEMON Tools. A system reboot will be required to set up the virtual disc environment.
  3. Reboot your computer when prompted to do so.
  4. DAEMON Tools installation will continue after your operating system starts up. You may receive some warnings notifying you that the setup is trying to continue. Allow the setup to continue.
  5. Choose the options you want to install. You need the core files and the shortcuts. The Search Bar is optional advertising which you can safely avoid installing.
  6. From now on, you will be able to mount ISO images by right-clicking the DAEMON Tools icon in your taskbar and following this menu sequence:
Virtual CD/DVD ROM | Device 0: [Letter:] | Mount image
Notice what drive letter you are mounting to.
  7. This will bring up a dialog box allowing you to browse to and open image files. Select the .ISO or .IMG file you downloaded from MSDNAA and click Open to mount the image.
  8. You can now access the image as if it were a CD or DVD by going to My Computer (or Computer in Vista) and double-clicking, auto-running, or exploring the contents of the virtual drive (the drive letter is the same as the one you noted above).
Running Software from a Mounted ISO Image

Once your ISO file is mounted, you will see a new drive show up in your My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista) pane. You can interact with this virtual drive as if you had a CD loaded in it – by right clicking it and choosing AutoPlay, or by Exploring it and choosing Setup.exe, and so forth.

When installing the software, make sure to follow any instructions on the virtual CD, especially readme files.

Any eligible STEM-D (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Business and Design) student is eligible to get all the software and tools in the MSDN Academic Alliance program from their department - any STEM-D department in which you are currently taking any class.

Here are 3 options for you to get MSDN AA software:

  1. Find out if your school is currently a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance Program at http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchUS.aspx (be entering the state and city of your school)
    • if your department (any department in which you are currently taking any class) is listed, just contact your faculty or IT department to get you signed-up to download the MSDN AA software onto your PC. ALL students enrolled in any course in the STEM-D department are eligible to get ALL of the MSDN AA software onto their personal PCs.
      • Once your department's MSDN AA Program Admin sets up your account, just  'Get Software Link' to login and download the software you need.
    • If your department (any department in which you are currently taking any class) is NOT listed, approach the department IT admin or faculty and have then sign-up for MSDN AA at http://msdnaa.net
  2. Search for any Student Club registered with MSDNAA (or STEM-D department) in your city at http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchUS.aspx.
    • Approach the Student club, provide proof of your enrollment in a STEM-D class and request a login-into their MSDN AA software distribution mechanism.
    • If you have a student club that is not a member of the MSDN AA program, have them sign-up for MSDN AA at http://msdnaa .net
  3. Are you a member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) or the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) or National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

If your STEM-D department or student club is not a member of MSDNAA, do ask them to sign-up at http://msdnaa.net.

How is the MSDN AA software distributed to students in STEM departments?

After the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) department sign-ups for a MSDN AA membership, getting the MSDN AA software and tools to your students and faculty involves 3 simple steps:

  1. Selecting the software distribution mechanism: (once per Lifetime)
    • Once per lifetime of the MSDN AA membership, select from the among the 4 options (detailed below) to choose from.
    • Recommendation: The 'ELMS with Cloud Hosted Server' is the simplest and easiest to setup and administer.
  2. Identifying the software to distribute (once per lifetime)
    • Once per lifetime of the MSDN AA membership, select all software listed in the MSDNAA and ELMS system as ALL students registered to take a class in the your department are eligible to receive all the MSDN AA software (whether their class uses any software or not), for their self-learning.
    • Every semester, add any new software added to MSDNAA , especially the newer releases
  3. Collecting the student identities (emails) to enable the distribution of the Software and license keys (every semester)
    • Every semester/quarter, collect the student emails of all students registered to take a class in your department and upload these identities to the ELMS system (In the case of the 2 ELMS options) or inform them of software availability (in the case of the other 2 options)

Software and License keys can be distributed by one of the following 4 options:

i. CD/DVD option:

    • One copy of the physical software media (CD/DVD) is mailed out you (the program Admin)
    • Make copies (CD/DVD) of the ALL software received for check-out by students and faculty.
    • The Program Admin downloads the product keys from MSDN Subscriber Downloads for distribution to each student/faculty.  Each student/faculty will require a unique product key to activate the software.
    • The Program Admin collects the student identities (emails) of all registered students that semester and sends them a note providing them instructions on how they can check out the software and obtain the product keys.

ii. Electronic Media option:

    • Using an online download for the one copy of software by Admin and then making copies (CD/DVD) for check out by students and faculty    OR    put the software on a secure server for students to download from the server.
    • The program Admin then downloads the product keys from MSDN Subscriber Downloads for distribution to each student/faculty. Each student/faculty  will require a unique product key to activate the software.
    • The program Admin collects the student identities (emails) of all registered students that semester and sends them a note providing them instructions on how they can check out the software/download software from secure server, and obtain the product keys.

iii. *ELMS with Campus Hosted Server:

    • Setup a secure Campus Hosted server and download for the one copy of the software onto this Campus Hosted Server
    • The program Admins selects all the software from the ELMS system that is available for students.
    • Admin uploads student identities (emails) of all registered students that semester so that the students can log into their accounts to get the product keys themselves.
    • ELMS system send the students instructions on how to get the product keys by signing into their accounts. Students/faculty with accounts download software from the secure campus Hosted server and the product keys from ELMS.

iv. *ELMS with Cloud Hosted Server: (Recommended)

    • The program Admins selects all the software from the ELMS system that is available for students.
    • Admin uploads student identities (emails) of all registered students that semester so that the students can log into their accounts to get the software and product keys from the ELMS Cloud Hosted Server.
    • ELMS system send the students instructions on how to get the software and product keys by signing into their accounts. Students/faculty with accounts download software from the secure Cloud Hosted server and the product keys from ELMS.

This option involves the least amount of work for the admin as there is no need for media or product key distribution (in option 1 or 2) OR for maintaining a secure server (option 2 or 3). In addition, the option 4 (and option 3) have an automatic tracking of license keys provided to each student identity (email), thus making the accounting easy for the Admins. hence option 4 is highly recommended. Did I mention, all these distribution options are included in the cost of MSDN AA membership so please avail the option that is simplest for your campus.

Why should MSDN AA software be made available to ALL eligible students (even if their class does not use the software)?

Technology skills are important for the student's career development, are increasingly a key ingredient of their  life and learning. Employers demand the latest technical skills, irrespective of the student's major in college. thus technology skills can be a huge differentiator but are also a requirement in today's technology-driven world.

Educational institutions can add value to their offerings by making MSDN AA software available to all eligible students. the professional software included in MSDN AA program gives students a view of the real-world tools and practices. MSDN AA software not only enhances the student learning during their school years but it also prepares them for the professional careers by providing them familiarity with the tools and practices used in the commercial world.

Besides the software in MSDN AA, Microsoft is providing other learning resources to help students learn the technical skills with elearning programs, demonstrate their learnings with the Imagine Cup student competition and connecting them to potential employers with the Students2Business program.

So, even when a software is not used in-class, students can avail the software from MSDN AA and the the learning resources provided by Microsoft and other partners to better position themselves in a competitive job-market. The school/department should make ALL of the MSDN AA software and tools  available to ALL eligible students so the students can enhance their learning and be better citizen in a technology-laden world.

Can any student get MSDN AA software?

MSDN Academic Alliance (http://msdnaa.net) is an important program where Microsoft works with universities to put Microsoft software in the hands of students registered in a science, technology, math, and/or engineering program, for non-commercial use. It will continue in close cooperation with schools around the world. MSDN AA is a paid membership program for college and university departments that enables them to issue software to their students.

  • MSDN AA software and tools offering is for distribution and use by students and faculty of STEM-D (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Design) departments for in-class teaching and research use, and by students for out-of-class self-learning.
  • Any student registered to take a class in a STEM-D department is eligible to get access to ALL of the MSDN AA software and tools (not just the software being used in the class they are taking).
  • The student does not have to be a major in the STEM-D department; the student must just be registered for taking a class in STEM-D department. Also the class the student is registered for does not need to be using any of the MSDNAA software in the class. Just being registered for a class in STEM-D program is sufficient for the student to get access to ALL of the MSDN AA software -for self-study, out-of-class projects, etc.
    • For example: at Wayne State University the computer science program runs a service course CSC 1000 - Introduction to  Computer Science. This course is only for non-computer science majors and is used by the non-cs Wayne students to  satisfy the Computer Literacy  Requirement. the course itself teaches  introductory computer concepts and desktop office applications. there were 15 sections offered in Fall 2008 - http://www.cs.wayne.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=19&id=65&Itemid=55
    • In this scenario, all students enrolled in the CSC 1000 are eligible to get ALL software from MSDN AA.
  • STEM-D Students (and faculty) can install ALL software on their personal machines; in addition all department machines in labs and faculty machines can be installed with MSDN AA software.
  • Students and faculty can retain all the software on their machines even after students graduate or when faculty stop teaching.
  • In all cases the MSDN AA software can only be used for non-commercial use, such as teaching, learning, research, in or outside the classroom. The students receiving MSDN AA software are expected to conform to the non-commercial use agreement.
  • The MSDN AA Licence agreement (EULA) provides the details and is posted at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/academic/bb250608.aspx
