Add value to a College degree with an out-of-class project

The article on "The declining value of a college degree" by Greg IP in today's The Wall Street Journal notes that  a college dress is not a stepping stone to guaranteed success but a necessity in this globalized world where the college dress is now comoditized. "What employers want from workers nowadays is more narrow, more abstract and less easily learned in college." the rise of technology has created a need for further differentiation and even cohorts of the same graduating class can give them selves a leg up on demands of employers by

  • Engaging in an out-of-class project

The advantage of this is that a student can pursue this in the area of their interest and over the entire length of their education. It shows initiative out-of-class and passion for an area that may align with an employer's interest.

Get free software from DreamSpark offering to all students at https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com/

  • Taking part in student competitions

Especially those that are industry sponsored and involve group-work. As a bonus there is an opportunity meet other contestants from other countries and also earn cash prizes in the process.

See Imagine Cup as an example at http://imaginecup.com/.

  • Internship

Can earn money while learning industry relevant skills and expertise. However, is dependent on finding such internship and may not be in the area of your eventual job.

  • Volunteer

Show case your skills by volunteering for the local non-profits. This is especially true if you have technology skills as many non-profits need help with their web sites, etc.

Just take an initiative that works for you that can enhance your resume, differentiate you from your cohorts and gain you valuable skills in the process. Taking part in an out-of-class activity in itself adds tremendous value and while the rewards may not be apparent immediately, the learnings can be of tremendous value. besides your experience in a project can help you guide the job-interview into something you are more familiar with and give you a leg-up.

Microsoft eScience Workshop to facilitate accelerating time to scientific discovery

The cross-disciplinary 2008 Microsoft eScience workshop being held in partnership with Indiana University at the  University Place Conference Center & Hotel at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in Indianapolis is expected bring together scientists from different research disciplines to share their research and experiences of how computing is shaping their work and to provide new insights into facilitating scientific discovery. The focus of this workshop, being held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual IEEE eScience Conference, is on discussion of the computing technologies that enable scalable solutions to scientific grand challenges.

The theme this year is “Accelerating time to discovery” and the organizers are looking for brief 1-2 page position papers from academics that are developing tools and technologies that facilitate scientific research. Also new this year will be some tutorials on Microsoft technologies that we believe can assist academics.

The 2008 Microsoft eScience Workshop invites contributions from all areas of eScience and e-Research including:

  • Computational enablement of scientific research in life sciences, biomedical computing, environment, energy, and other areas of scientific grand challenges
  • Knowledge discovery and merging datasets
  • Large-scale science data analysis, mining, and visualization
  • High-performance computing in science
  • Dissemination of scientific literature/results, the curation of data, and the finding/sharing of research
  • Scientific sensors and data-gathering tools and technologies
  • Collaboration and workflow tools and technologies

The Program Committee:

Previous Workshop Outcomes
Last years’ eScience workshop at The Renaissance Computing Institute, Chapel Hill, North Carolina attracted approximately 260 eScience researchers. Over 50 presentations and 100 posters showcased computational facilitation of reference disciplines as diverse as astronomy, malaria, and the use of GPUs for scientific computation (http://research.microsoft.com/workshops/escience2007/). Feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and the event also served as a venue for Microsoft groups to meet with researchers and discuss future collaborations.

Virtual Telescope

The WorldWide Telescope (WWT) is a Web 2.0 visualization software environment that enables your computer to function as a virtual telescope-bringing together imagery from the best ground and space-based telescopes in the world for a seamless exploration of the universe.

The public beta of Worldwide telescope is now available at http://www.worldwidetelescope.org and get empowered to explore and understand the universe with its simple and powerful user interface.

  • follow a guided tour of the sky by astronomers and educators from some of the most famous observatories and planetariums in the country.
  • enjoy seamless panning and zooming (use the + - keys) around the night sky, planets, and image environments.
  • View the sky from multiple wavelengths: See the x-ray view of the sky and zoom into bright radiation clouds, and then crossfade into the visible light view and discover the cloud remnants of a supernova explosion from a thousand years ago.
  • Switch to the Hydrogen Alpha view to see the distribution and illumination of massive primordial hydrogen cloud structures lit up by the high energy radiation coming from nearby stars in the Milky Way.

Note that the WWT requires DirectX 9.0c even when you already have DirectX 10 installed on my Vista box. The reason is that DirectX has a subcomponent (D3DX) that gets revved more often than DX itself. So, when people ask for DX 9.0c, they really mean DX 9.0c and D3DX rev 35 (for example). That's why you keep seeing the DX installer over and over again when you install a new DX app.

Now that the revving of D3DX has slowed down, these installers should be further and fewer apart (you roughly get one install per rev of D3DX).
