By now many of you have heard Joel have put together some dates to hit up various events in Australia.

He is planning on doing a session on “10 Steps to Successful Deployment” and “Preparing to Upgrade to SharePoint 2010 Today” including a presentation by Adam Cogan, Microsoft Regional Director and .NET MVP and Kathy Hughes SharePoint MVP in Sydney While being joined by an Expert Panel made up of Microsoft rep, SharePoint MVPs, experts.

Announcing SharePoint Server 2010 Preliminary System Requirements

We’ve heard loud and clear that you want system requirements information as early as possible to assist in your budgeting and planning, so today we’re happy to announce (and confirm) some preliminary system requirements for SharePoint Server 2010:

SharePoint Server 2010 will be 64-bit only.
SharePoint Server 2010 will require 64-bit Windows Server 2008 or 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2.
SharePoint Server 2010 will require 64-bit SQL Server 2008 or 64-bit SQL Server 2005.

Announcing Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

We are happy to announce that Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 has been released to the Microsoft Download Center. It includes all the fixes prior to SP2, and also several enhancements to improve server farm performance, availability and stability. Plus, a new stsadm operation has been added to help customers prepare for the upgrade to the next version of SharePoint. We recommend installing this new service pack and to help, I’ve assembled links to the KB articles, downloads, install steps and benefits.

Quick Q&A

Q: Why is the new STSADM upgrade checker operation important for my customers?

A: The upgrade checker is a stsadm operation that scans server farm to establish whether it is ready for upgrade to SharePoint 2010. It does so by identifying issues that could present obstacles to the upgrade process. It provides feedback and best practice recommendations on your current environment, together with information on how to resolve any issues that the tool discovers. It also check operating system requirement for Windows Server 2008 and 64bit.

Q: Which browser will be added into support for SP2 for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0?

A: Internet Explorer 8 will be added into level 1 browser support, and Firefox 2.0/3.0 will be added into level 2 browser support.

Q: Which operating system will be added into support?

A: Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be supported on their release.

Q: Can customer skip other updates and directly apply SP2 in their server farm?

A: Yes. SP2 includes SP1 and Infrastructure updates.

Q: Are we announcing the full system requirement for SharePoint Server 2010 this time?

A: No. The information you can give to the customer now is Windows Server 2008 and 64 bit.

Knowledge portals are more important to organizations today than ever before. The more than 120,000 employees, contractors, and vendors at Microsoft create an increasing amount of digital information that pertains to their job responsibilities. Employees access much of this information through the Microsoft primary knowledge portal, MSWeb (MSW for short).

The Microsoft intranet contains a number of information sources, of which MSW is one of the primary access points to the hundreds of intranet sites at Microsoft. MSW helps employees find information, stay informed, and make productive use of the company intranet. Employees can find everything from the latest editorially selected news to accessing the campus map for their region. Users gain access to information on MSW through browsing, through navigation, and through the enterprise search capabilities in Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007.

Maintaining the previous version of the portal involved extensive manual work, including creating daily home pages and copying news stories to category specific pages and archive pages. Publishing some of the content was also a manual process, often managed via e-mail requests. This manual process made following MSW styles and guidelines difficult, which resulted in an inconsistent site design. Microsoft wanted to improve portal administration and site design, simplify navigation and publishing workflows, and enhance search capabilities to deliver an even more valuable resource to employees.
