Thinking about a name for Composite WPF

We're in the early stages of the new Composite WPF. We've received a bunch of feedback from customers that the name needs work and doesn't roll off the tongue.  This applies to the short form CWPF or the longer Composite Windows Presentation Foundation. We've been playing the name game internally to see if we could come up with something more simplified that does not contain WPF in the name. Here a list of some of the ideas we've been throwing around.  We're trying to avoid something that we would have to get trademarked.

PRISM - something like PResentation Integration SysteM.

cx - Composite eXperience

cx - Composite eXtensions

cui - Composite UI

mui - Modular UI

glui - Glued UI

What works for you? Do you have any better suggestions?

# re: Thinking about a name for Composite WPF

Does it really have to be yet another acronym? Why not just 'Prism'?

Going by what other Application Blocks are named, I would think of something which makes immediate sense. We have enough of jargon already. I would suggest:

Composite Application Block for WPF (CABWPF)

Not as pleasant as prism. -:)

Prism, with less emphasis on it being an acronym. If people are dying for a meaning, you can explain where it came from. Please not CABWPF. Try saying that 10 times in a paragraph or conference talk.

# re: Thinking about a name for Composite WPF

Does it really have to do with a technological name. "Avalon" was a cool name for something like WPF. It was fresh, fun and very approachable. I would love to see a name like that.

The general idea for such a name could come from themes like:

1. Assembly of some blocks (LEGO..I know we can't use it ...but thats the theme)

2. UI Composition (something like a musical composition..Opera or the name of some nice Symphony)

3. Alignment of different parts (Imagine a group of flying birds...aligned in one direction, a shoal of fish)

4. Bunch of beads tied with a string...to form a Necklace.

Hope I gave some ideas as to general direction.

I like what Pavan said. The name should not really distract so that people are worried to use it, just because they can't recall what it stands for ! pretty extreme, eh !!

My vote goes to "Prism", it's also easy to pronounce for non-english speakers.

How about "Blend UI". Also goes nicely with Expression brand.

FWIW, Mozilla Labs renamed their 'Webrunner' project to 'Prism' last October:

# re: Thinking about a name for Composite WPF

Are you going to support Silverlight 2.0 (even in a cut-down form) as I believe guidance is something that would prove a great asset when trying to really get wpf and Silverlight out the door.

Thanks,

John

# re: Thinking about a name for Composite WPF

I like the word "modular", but not MUI.

How about MV? "Modular Views". That rolls out the tongue smoothly and probably doesn't have to be trademarked.

Alternatively, you can call it WMV, if you find the need to "Windomize" it. :P
