What Is The World Coming To: Software Is Not Free?

http://www.forbes.com/home/technology/2005/05/26/cz_dl_0526linux.html

Speaking as someone from an ISV background myself I have never understood open source as a business model. It is easy to see the attractivness to the receiving end of the transaction those that get it for "free" it is even easy to understand those developers that want to give something back and participate in the evolution of something. I just have never understood how the person who signs the checks could justify it.

Guess I am not alone ......

Got this from a co-worker (Thanks Paul) who got it from someone ....

"My response is, Let me know when your rent and college tuition are free, when gas and groceries are free, and when your girlfriend decides that you having no money is a great idea. When all this is true I'll get on the bandwagon, too. Some people don't understand that it costs saliers to develop stuff and support stuff"
