IE 8 Performance

With IE 8 being expected to be released any day now http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2009/03/12/2003438292 the discussions are not only focusing around the new features such as Accelerators or WebSlices, but also on the question of performance. How will IE8 compare to competitive browser technology?

For the Internet Explorer 8 performance published, the Top 25 websites in the world were used as measured by comScore to reflect the sites users are most likely to visit on the web. The following table shows results from the benchmark testing process for those 25 websites tested on the following browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer 8. As noted earlier, Microsoft chooses approximately 25 websites for daily testing, and tens of thousands on a monthly basis. Any list of websites to be used for benchmarking must contain a variety of websites, including international websites, to help ensure a complete picture of performance as users would experience on the Internet.

Azure “How Do I” (HDI) Videos

One of the big buzzwords today is "cloud computing" these days and it is on the very top of mind with most people. Microsoft's Azure is a key part of Microsoft's strategy to provide a services platform. The first set of a comprehensive HDI’s are now published. They are based on the entire Azure Services Platform and you can see the Azure Services Platform in action without the CTP. You can think of the HDIs as an easy way to start to learn more about this new platform. The HDIs are a free, useful set of resources to get you up to speed quickly. Everyone loves this YouTube style of learning – in fact, devs downloaded a whopping 3.7 million HDIs from MSDN as of Nov FY09! Along with the HDIs ( Overall Page ), get the Azure SDK from here If you want to request access to the CTP, go to the Connect.Microsoft.com site to sign up for access tokens – SDS and .NET services access is more broadly available than Windows Azure and Live Services today, so be patient, but get in the queue!

Windows 7 Audio Issues on Lenovo T61p

In a previous post I wrote about my experiences with installing Windows 7 on my Computers and I mentioned that the speakers on my Lenovo T61p do not work with Windows 7. While that was true and little annoying, I usually mute the speakers and use a headset anyways, there is a simple solution to this :-).

I was reading posts in newsgroups and forums about how to install the SoundMax drivers on the laptop so the speakers work again. There is a ton of information out there what version in what order you have to install….. I tried a few of the mentioned techniques, but they did not result in success. I also used the icon on the taskbar, the control panel, and the hardware and device manager to get the speakers going with no success either. The hardware manager was telling me that all sound devices work just fine…..

This week I came across a blog post from Doncho Angelov and he has a simple, yet successful way to solve the problem. It seems that after installation the sound is muted and this does not show in any of the controls on your desktop. But if you use the built in buttons on the keyboard you can un-mute the laptop. THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO USE THE BUTTONS ON THE KEYBOARD!!!!!!!

t61p

Simple, but successful. I then went and got the Lenovo Interface drivers and the OSD software and now everything works. The taskbar speaker symbol shows muted when the speaker is muted and I can use the taskbar icon to change the volume as well as muting and un-muting the sound…..

I guess one of the reasons, why I never tried the volume buttons on the keyboard is the fact that most of the time I use a docking station and have the lid of the laptop closed….. Oh, well….

Hope this helps…… It did the trick for me…..
