Introductions and Tip#1

I know this is very American of me but I couldn't stop myself:

"GraceWorld... GraceWorld... GraceWorld..." (imagine hearing that in the tone of Wayne's World from SNL - I'm also fond of Hans and Franz - the guys who want to "Pump you up!")

So if you happen to remember that from the 90s (or was it the 80s???) - anyway. :-) That should give you a flavor of my often times goofy humor. By day I (and often evenings and weekends) work as a technical evangelist specializing in Visual Studio Team System.

Technical Evangelist??? (I bet that conjurs up all sorts of weird concepts and jokes in your mind when you hear such a nonstandard job title.)

I work with key partners doing integrations with Team System. I also drive content generation for Team System focused on early customer training and technical field content.

And every now and then I get to go out and meet other customers and partners in different parts of the world. Last month I had some fun meetings in Amsterdam while I was out there for a Microfocus conference.  I spoke at one of the sessions at the conference and went to their evening event that involved a boat tour on the famous canals of Amsterdam. The guys of Microfocus were a real hoot to meet. This evening I'm writing my first blog from the bar in the Sana Lisboa hotel in Lisbon, Portugal. (I refuse to listen to my husband who insists as an American I should be pronouncing that 'Porchugal' not 'PorTugal'). :-) Did I mention that I'm a stubborn Taurus? (Speaking of - Happy birthday Keith!!! Keith is also a Taurus and is a Product Unit Manager for Windows Forms and can put on some great moves on the disco floor!).

As for Lisbon - I've been here primarily for 3 days of VSTS training for strategic customers and partners using some updated content for beta 2. Some of it was rough material and we definitely had some challenges with the hands on labs with the updated vpc. For the folks that attended - thanks for your patience and great feedback and questions!

Now - what some people want:

Tip#1 Team Build

You go and create a build configuration and it appears you can't check it out and edit it from the Team Foundation Source Control window.

-Map it to a workspace:

  • open a cmd window
  • go to the directory where you've got your source project
  • type h workspace
  • a window pops up that gives you an opportunity to map your build configuration path in Foundation to a local drive - pick a local directory
  • now that you have a workspace mapping for the build configs - go back to the source control window in the VS shell and right click on the build directory and select Get Latest
  • Now check out your <buildcfgname>.proj buildscript - make your changes and check them back in.
  • Rerun your build script - and voila!

Thanks to Peter Himschoot for co-teaching the training with me. I am envious of Peter's training abilities. He was really great - gave the right amount of context and great examples during his presentations and had great demo's. He used some of his own slides that he generously gave me to contribute to the early training content. Peter even put up with an accidental tour I gave him of "The Real World" Lisbon on a walk on the backside of our hotel - I meant to take him to a touristy area with shopping and restaurants that was a 10 minute walk away but ended up in a completely unexpected and colorful neighborhood after 45 minutes of meandering. Thankfully Peter is an extremely patient person - one of the things that makes him a great instructor!

Well that's it for this first blog entry. Have a great weekend!
