http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946517 - Fix to correct  6482 Timer job Heap Corruption Issue on 64 bit system

After applying SP1 the accounts on the WFE OSearch DCOM object permissions were removed.  This was most likely caused by a failure in the OWSTimer job Application Server Administration job.  This can be verified by Office Server Shared Services 6482 error in the application.  Apply the KB946517 prior to installing the SharePoint Service Pack Should prevent this and other problems

If you have this problem you can see the following behaviors as well.

·         Office SharePoint Server Event 6482 - COMException (0x80040D23): The gatherer is shutting down.

·         Provision of service Osearch failed. Additional information: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed..

·         The search service is currently offline. Visit the Services on Server page in SharePoint Central Administration to verify whether the service is enabled. This might also be because an indexer move is in progress.

·         MSSCrawlURL Table grows out of control to 58 million records when they have only < 50K items.

·         Indexer stuck on “Computing Index”
