Exchange 2007 Service Pack Preview Ships

Enterprise

Exchange 2007 Service Pack Preview Ships
By Stuart J. Johnston

Microsoft announced Tuesday that it is shipping Beta 2 of the first service pack for Exchange Server 2007. With this beta, which is also being called a community technology preview or CTP, Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now feature complete, according to company officials.

Exchange Server 2007 shipped last December.

Among the new capabilities coming in SP1 is support for Windows Server 2008 -- which is set for official launch on February 27, 2008 -- as well as support for Windows Vista. That means Exchange Server 2007 SP1 will be able to take advantage of Windows Server 2008's support for geographically-dispersed clusters. SP1 will also run Exchange Server 2007's management tools on both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008

The service pack will also feature increased support for the company's unified communications initiative, including the ability to retrieve voice mails from Microsoft Office Communicator.

New high-availability features include "standby continuous replication," wherein mailbox data is constantly replicated to a standby server. If the main server or the data center it resides in goes offline, the standby server is automatically started, according to Microsoft (Quote) statements.

"[That will provide] a hot standby server that's always up to date," Ray Mohrman, group product manager in Microsoft's Unified Communications group, told internetnews.com.

On the security front, SP1 adds support for new ActiveSync policies for synchronization, authentication, and encryption to let administrators better manage Exchange ActiveSync-enabled devices.

"[For instance,] you might not want cameras to be on, or you might want all e-mails encrypted," Mohrman added.

Additionally, Exchange 2007 SP1 will integrate with Microsoft Forefront Security Server SP1 for Exchange Server. The update of Forefront Security Server for Exchange will provide additional content filtering and scanning performance, as well as support for Windows Server 2008, according to the company.

Exchange Server 2007 SP1 -- as well as Forefront Security SP1 for Exchange Server -- is scheduled for release by the end of the year. SP1 Beta 2 is available to all MSDN and Microsoft TechNet subscribers.

10 things you should know on Silverlight.

From :  www.computerworld.com

August 09, 2007 (CIO) -- Crafting a Web strategy is important for any thriving business. However, implementing that strategy with rich Internet applications is not always as easy as it should be. To ease that pain, Microsoft Corp. recently announced Silverlight, a cross-platform, cross-browser plug-in for Web application developers. The plug-in, currently available as a Release Candidate (which for all intents and purposes means it's released now), enables rich application development including media, interactivity and animation. The Silverlight plug-in currently works with Internet Explorer and Firefox Web browsers on Windows and with Firefox and Safari on Mac OS X.

Lotus-to-Microsoft Migration Tool Offered

From : http://www.adtmag.com/article.aspx?id=20823

6/14/2007

By Kurt Mackie

Unify Corp. is offering a product that lets companies switch their IBM Lotus Notes e-mail and collaboration applications to the Microsoft Office system.

The company's product, called Microsoft Edition of Composer for Lotus Notes, can capture both template-based and custom Lotus Notes applications, exposing them as services in a service-oriented architecture (SOA). The migrated Lotus Notes components can then be supported by Microsoft's SharePoint, Visual Studio and SQL Server solutions.

“Composer addresses one of the biggest challenges for Notes organizations today -- migrating custom Lotus Notes applications to an SOA architecture,” stated Todd Wille, CEO of Unify, in a press release.

Unify's press release described the process of reassembling Lotus Notes applications using Composer.

The solution moves the Lotus Notes data into a SQL Server database and the business logic is restructured as C#-based Web services in Visual Studio. The user interface "is transformed into SharePoint Lists, Web Parts or ASP.NET applications," according to the press release. Finally, the access control list is mapped to Microsoft Active Directory Services to maintain security.

Unify's solution can accomplish this migration while "retaining the value of the Notes business logic, workflow and data," according to Wille.

Introduction to Windows CardSpace

Some of you were asking lately for a good definition on Cardspace. Look what I found on http://cardspace.netfx3.com/content/introduction.aspx

Windows CardSpace, formerly codenamed “InfoCard”,  is a piece of client software that enables users to provide their digital identity to online services in a simple, secure and trusted way. It is what is known as an identity selector:  when a user – or subject – needs to authenticate to a website or a web service, CardSpace pops up a special security-hardened UI with a set of “cards”  for the user to choose from. Each card has some identity data associated with it – though this is not actually stored in the card – and has been given to the user by an identity provider such as their bank, employer or government. In fact, the user can also act as an identity provider – this is essentially what we do every time we register at a website. The CardSpace UI enables users to create Personal cards and associate a limited set of identity data. When the user chooses a card, a request in the form of a web service call goes to the relevant provider, and a signed and encrypted security token is returned containing the required information (e.g. credit limit, employer’s name and address, or perhaps a social security number). The user, in control of the flow of information at all times, then decides whether to release this information to the requesting online service. If the user approves then the token is sent on to this relying party where the token is processed and the user is authenticated.

CardSpace is an implementation of an identity selector on Microsoft Windows. Other operating systems will see their own identity selector implementations. The architecture upon which CardSpace has been built – consisting of subjects, identity providers and relying parties – is called “The Identity Metasystem”. This isn’t just a Microsoft initiative, but rather it is the shared vision of many across the industry as to how we can solve some of the fundamental identity challenges on the Internet today. The initial vision for the Identity Metasystem was developed by Microsoft’s Identity Architect, Kim Cameron, and has been broadly adopted and championed by thought-leaders such as Doc Searls and Lawrence Lessig. To learn more about the metasystem and the guiding principles behind it (“The Laws of Identity”), refer to the whitepapers on MSDN and Kim’s blog, www.identityblog.com.

THE BOTTOM LINE

KBC Bank used Microsoft Visual Studios Team System and Team Foundation Server to improve application-building methodologies, increase productivity, and accelerate application deployment.

ROI: 89%
Payback: 1.12 years

THE COMPANY

KBC Bank is a financial services group active in the fields of banking, insurance, and wealth management. The company’s operations consist of retail and commercial operations located in Belgium, seven other Western European countries, and Central Europe, where the company recently expanded its global operations. KBC’s strategy is to become one of the leading providers of commercial, private, and retail banking services in both Central and Eastern Europe. The KBC Group was formed in 2005 through the merger of KBC Bank & Insurance Holding Company and its parent company Almanij. KBC is publicly held, has 11 million customers, and employs 50,000 people.

THE CHALLENGE

While KBC has been expanding into new banking markets, it has also been globally expanding its software development operations in an effort to reduce development costs. In 2005, developers and team managers at the bank’s headquarters began working with staff at ValueSource Technologies, an Indian software development company that KBC had recently acquired. Although the goal of distributed development was reduced costs and accelerated application delivery, having project managers in Europe and developers in India created some challenges common to development outsourcing:

  • Misunderstood messages. Due to language and cultural differences, instructions about system requirements and project changes were often misinterpreted or unclear. Sometimes these problems went undetected for several weeks, requiring code rework.
  • Delayed responses. Because of the time zone differences, project managers did not always have the most recent versions of project source code, causing them to delegate assignments and ask for source code changes based on stale code or incorrect project information.
  • Limited progress checks. Because team leaders and developers worked in different time zones, it was difficult to check in daily for progress updates. This often resulted in significant productivity losses for both developers and team leaders who would review or build irrelevant materials.

In order to better take advantage of its distributed development strategy, KBC began looking for a solution that would centralize the tasks, assets, and visibility of its international software development operations.

THE STRATEGY

In 2005, KBC evaluated several ways to build and support a new methodology for application development. KBC had been using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0, and considered migrating to Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, but KBC would have had to combine the solution with several other point solutions in order to get the functionality they needed. KBC was also interested in Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server, which was under development by Microsoft at the time. After careful consideration and negotiation, KBC decided to adopt the beta version of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2005 and Team Foundation Server. KBC felt that Microsoft’s new products cost effectively enabled it to create a workable platform and respond quickly to its collaboration challenges in India.

Microsoft Visual Studio Team System was quickly deployed by one KBC employee in six weeks and Team Foundation Server was deployed in 10 weeks.

To further leverage Microsoft Visual Studio Team System, three employees then spent time over the next year creating and refining an internal application development framework and aggregating best practices, with assistance from Microsoft consultants.

Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server are used by 50 developers and project leaders and have enabled the creation of an orderly workflow between the European and Indian operations. At the beginning of the European business day, project managers use Team Foundation Server to access the most recent versions of source code and other project assets from India, and then provide it to local business users for evaluation. Based on end-user feedback, project managers then provide India with new work orders, which are received by developers in India at the beginning of their business day.

KEY BENEFIT AREAS

Using Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server has provided KBC with the tools to support better collaboration, improve productivity, and refine its application delivery process. Key benefits from the solution include:

  • Increased developer and manager productivity. Because Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server enable project managers to work with more up-to-date project assets and take advantage of the time delay, project managers and developers collaborate more effectively and have reduced the amount of code that is discarded or reworked because of faulty or delayed communications. These benefits have made KBC’s 35 developers 50 percent more productive and made the five project managers 19 percent more productive.
  • Improved software quality. Improved collaboration and better testing have enabled KBC to improve the quality of its software. Before the deployment, coding errors required developers to spend an average of 120 hours on service calls for each of the solutions it deployed and this has been eliminated
  • Improved deployment efficiency. By making it easier for KBC to deploy, package, and distribute applications within the company, Visual Studio Team System 2005 has shortened the average project cycle time by approximately 100 hours.

KEY COST AREAS

Key cost areas for the deployment included personnel, consulting, training, software, and hardware. Visual Studio Team System was deployed in six weeks and Team Foundation Server in 10. Three employees then spent time over the next year creating and deploying an application development framework that would leverage the benefits of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System. Two Microsoft consultants were on hand throughout the deployment and helped KBC staff to both deploy the solution and create the development framework. Once the solution was deployed, four developers attended a .NET boot camp and 35 attended a 1-week training program on Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and Team Foundation Server. Software costs consisted of 35 seats of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System and a Team Foundation Server license for up to 100 developers. The solutions reside on a proxy server in India, for which KBC pays an annual fee.

LESSONS LEARNED

KBC found the benefits of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System went beyond operational improvements to the development process. By using the solutions to create an orderly workflow based on centralized and up-to-date project assets, KBC overcame some of the basic problems that companies typically face when using offshore software development. It also enabled project managers to spend less time on project management problems and more time meeting the needs of the business users. As a result of these wins, the IT department has been able to reduce costs, deliver applications faster, and increase ownership of their projects. KBC found selecting the right development support application was more difficult than anticipated. Although this was eased by its access to Microsoft Visual Studio Team System as a beta user, beta usage has its own risks. In order to allay internal skepticism about the solution and mitigate the risks from using such a new solution, KBC management maintained a relationship with Microsoft that was close, hands-on, and positive. KBC also took time at the outset to negotiate clear and favorable terms of the beta relationship.

CALCULATING THE ROI

Nucleus calculated the costs of software, hardware, consulting, personnel, training, and other investments over a 3-year period to quantify KBC’s total investment in Microsoft’s Team system. Indirect benefits including increased productivity of employees were calculated based on the average fully loaded cost of employees. Time savings associated with improved collaboration, better feedback, and improved process efficiencies were multiplied over a 3-year period as well.

40 demo's extra for the Demo Showcase FY07 :-)

A post on the demo showcase again. The demo Showcase is GREAT, it provides a lot of Pre-installed software together with 23 scripts that are up and running. These scenario's provide a good overview of what can be achieved with the Microsoft Platform. Now in addition to this Microsoft offers a lot of examples (eg. MSDN, Technet, Technical Demonstration Toolkit, ... which provide in-depth product feature demo's). Now how can we combine the best of both worlds (Platform Demo's / In Depth product demo's). With this post I want to generate some feedback. It is just an idea to have add-on's available that can be added to the  demo showcase as it will be delivered to our partners somewhere in May 2007.In my opinion this kind of add-on's can help to insure the WW success on the demo showcase This example add's the faboulous 40 WSS Templates.

WSS Application templates are out-of-the-box custom scenarios tailored to address the needs and requirements of specific business processes or sets of tasks in organizations of any size. They can be applied to a task, such as managing a help desk or tracking a marketing campaign, to easily create a dedicated Web-based application for a more efficient and effective way of working. This list of Templates is added to the DS after executing the Installation files & running the postInstallation commands.

Package only includes English versions.
