VPC Performance tips for the Demo Showcase Beta Version

To all the Demo Showcase Beta testers. Please find here my findings on the VPC performance of this great demo content.

I had a fair performance running the demoscripts taking these considerations into account :

* Put all the VHD images on an external disk.
* Reserve a partition on your external disk exclusively for the Demo Showcase
* Format the partition before copying the VHD's to your external disk.
* Flag the Partition so that files are compressed when written to the partition.
* Exclude VHD images to be scanned by your virus scanner.
* Warm up the demo and start your demo from a saved state.
* I run the demo on a machine 4GB Ram & Dual Core Intel Processor

More info on the Demo Showcase can be found at : here

I think it has been pretty clearly proven that compressing this drive is NOT a performance enhancement for VHDs.

Why do you recommend this?

doesn't compressing add an overhead? i would have thought it was better not to compress

I'm happy with the performance of the VHD's on a compressed disk. Hard proof are not in my possession but I'm running a "slow" External Hardisk (5400 RPM) just because of the weight in my backpack. If you compare this to the faster External HD (7200 RTM) it might make sence. With a slower HD compression means less disk activity but in return you have to deal with some processing time.

With the new release of Demo Showcase consider connecting to live platform to show demos or consider the simulations that will be created with Expression. Live is avaiable for trialing soon, see the MSPP link for latest details
