I enjoyed reading this blog post. I'm amused by people going all Jerry Seinfeld over technology.

There is one reason however why one should never compare Windows to MacOS like this: MacOS runs on closed hardware. Any technical person and any person with some common sense would agree that it's infinitely more difficult to run your software without glitches on an infinite number of hardware configurations compared to running it on just a small set of configs.

Here's some more information:

- at launch 1.4 million devices were supported, whilst today that figure has grown to 2.2 million devices

- at launch 23,000 hardware products were supported and this has now reached 41,000; whilst over 900 hardware partners are certifying thousands of components.

- according to Download.com, 98 out of the top 100 best selling Windows applications are all compatible. To date, over 2,000 applications have passed Vista compatibility tests.

My point? Leopard will never be the new Windows. It will always be the OS that runs well (at least in most cases) on a handful of configurations with a limited set of applications to run. Still, it proves to be a good model for Apple and they get and deserve also praise for that from some who are happy to live with these constraints. And that's fine by me.

PS: I'm getting Leopard myself next week whilst in the US. It's a Euro vs. Dollar thing.

Boot Camp now support VIsta too

For all you fashionable-speed-loving pc users who bought a MAC just to run Vista, Boot Camp now offcially supports Vista.
I got quite a few questions on Vista and Office 2007 triggered by my posts on Bootcamp. I'm personally waiting for Vista RC1 before I rebuild my MacBook Pro. When I do that, I also plan an updated install script I will post on my blog. My hope is that I can start in just a few more days :-)

Currently, Vista is not available for downloads. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

Reading the Vista team blog, it seems you will be able to get back on board when Release Candidate 1 will come out: http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/archive/2006/08/10/445959.aspx

Also users of Office 2007 have been asking how they can provide feedback. The easiest way to provide feedback is to use the ‘Send a smile’ tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A2E1F4E2-BC0F-4403-B09F-7A677D55F274&displaylang=en <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Some Office products also have a dedicate site that allows users to log bugs: http://connect.microsoft.com/availableconnections.aspx

And for other products I suggest using the newsgroups: http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/community/newsgroups.mspx

Enjoy discovering the new features in Office 2007 and be sure to get on the Vista RC1 train in a couple more days (hopefully).

Design Advice for Mac

This is something you won't often see, design advice for Apple by a Microsoftie.

I've got the machine for a couple of months now and I still think that, in spite of its limitations, it's a nice and fast machine to run Vista. The machine also generates a lot of controversy but now I want to talk abit about how a design flaw by Apple recently made my Macbook less attractive.

The problem is that the keys on the left and right edge have a straight side. As a result I lost a key recently as I put the laptop in my bag and accidentily a DVD slipped between the lid that was closed and the keyboard.

All other keys are design correct, look at the CTRL key for instance, except the most vulnerable ones on the edge. As you can see, my Toshiba tablet PC has much better designed keys.

This post is about: Vista, Apple Boot Camp

Vista on MacBook Pro: Half Time

I’m seeing a lot of interest in my Vista on MacBook Pro posts. It’s great to see so many of you are eager to get Vista Beta 2 running on what is, in my opinion, one of the better machines out there.

Recently, one of my articles got Digged and since then the page views have skyrocketed (at least relative to my norms). I assume some folks aren’t interested in my usual writings so I have created a bootcamp category that one could use to just subscribe to my posts on Bootcamp.

So currently this is the status:

You can install Vista on Bootcamp. Dual boot works perfectly.

Vista is still Beta 2 so don’t expect release quality.

You need to delete the EFI partition and people have warned me that this will prevent automatic firmware updates from Apple!

There are still some driver issues with Vista (iSight…)

Here are some things I like and some things I dislike about the Mac:

Good:

Great performance on both Vista and Mac OsX

Run Vista and Mac

Wow factor

Bad:

This isn’t a Tablet machine. I really miss that

Weird Swiss Apple keyboard isn’t really suited for Windows

No PC Card slot for smartcard reader for instance

It gets really hot, can’t put it on my lap

Some devices still don’t work

As I find out more about installing Vista on Mac and getting the drivers installed, I will keep you updated.

Below, I’m listing my previous blog posts about this and as you can see I went from frustration to excitement.

Boot Camp with Vista? I don't think so!

If you want a Windows PC, then don't buy a Mac...

Upgraded my MacBook Pro

Vista Beta 2 on MacBook Pro with Bootcamp? You bet!

Only 4 more drivers to find fro Vista on MacBook Pro
