SDK Home Page

I've been working on the SDK “home page” for the last couple of days and trying to figure out what should be on the default page that loads up when the user starts the SDK. I've come up with a couple of things that I think would be useful (see below), did I miss anything? Or is there something you'd like to see on the first page when you open the SDK:

  • Table of contents (so a user can start navigating the documents as soon as they open the SDK)
  • Search (this would probably be accessible from every page)
  • Today's headlines from MSDN - this can be tailored to whatever the users interests are

There would also be links to index, pages about technology overviews and sync status (for parts of the SDK that the user has chosen to have offline)

Thoughts? I'll be working more on this tomorrow and I'll post anything that I add/change sometime later tomorrow.

I'd like to see a history of recently viewed topics. This would very well complement the Favorites feature.

I agree with Chango. History of recently viewed topics would be a great addition. An option to customize the table of contents would be nice. I am thinking something similar to the My MSN home page where I can choose different modules depending on my area of interest. (Resizable please!)

One module can be history, another can be table of contents (customized for say C# Generics ),another can be a collection of links to websites/blogs I find interesting like new articles published on CodeProject. And yet another can be today's headlines from MSDN as you suggested.

Please not todays headlines -- or at least not unless I can easily change it. If I want to see headlines, i'll go to MSDN. If I want SDK information, i'll open the SDK.

I do like the idea of combining search with a list of previously opened topics.

A quick list of all samples with direct links or directory of categorized samples would be nice.

The biggest problem with all SDKs is their size and knowing what parts of it you are interested in. I would love to see the home page have a region that it contextually driven by the current project I am working on. Sort of like the dynamic help panel only for the whole project. You know the namespaces I'm working in, you know the language. You could read keywords from my comments to know that I'm working on something that involves encryption for example.

Also if something has been updated that I've looked at in the past 6 months then let me know.

While Phillip is right, we don't need "today's headlines," topical feeds of "what's new in the LHSDK" in Atom or RSS2 would be *greatly* apprecitated.

VIVA VEGAS!

Before I post a response to this, is your team also responsible for the SDK winform app inside windows? Is vegas the codename for both, or just the website?

One thing I'll toss out for now is that the homepage should have some box containing "Most Recent / Most Recently Changed Content" where the new samples / articles, etc can be quickly found.
