It is an extensible platform which could also be used for mobile sales (CRM) or field force enablement."

If your organization runs SAP and is interested in providing access to the back office on Windows Mobile devices, then contact the Solution Delivery Lead for Mobile Solutions in the UK, Steve Butcher (steve.butcher@avanade.com).
It's all pretty interesting stuff, really. But people seem to forget that their is one other player out there, us. Google hasn't even made a phone yet. We have WAY more phones out there than either RIM or Apple.

Yes, I realize that we don't do a very good job of branding 'Windows Mobile' right now, but that will change (and soon). I also realize that maybe WM isn't the sexy beast these other platforms can spin up, but I have to tell you, that is changing as well.

How many of you have used the Diamond yet? I've been using it for about 5 days right now, and I must say I am pleasantly surprised by it. There are some things that bother me about it, but for the style of device that it is, I am pretty happy with it. And this is essentially a V1 of the type of device that we will be seeing on the market.

How many of you have seen the Experia or the Omnia? I have...they rock! And the form and function is REALLY nice. I think you'll start seeing a trend towards these types of devices moving forward as we keep innovating on the platform side...I guess in some ways we have Apple to think for really spurring some innovation on design, so thanks Steve Jobs :)

As a marketing org, yes, we need to really start pushing the WM brand...more so than every before. And from a partner aspect, you guys need to help me scream from the roof tops that there is a solid platform out there that exists in many different form factors, that has great functionality, that is equipped to do MS Office natively, that has an AMAZING TCO story when compared to RIM, and that has an AWESOME enterprise DM and Security story compared to iPhone and Android. And let's not forget the ROI for applications on devices; apps that almost every company has the talent to create with the toolsets and languages that they already know.

If you guys could see what Reed and I get to every day, I think you would agree that the short and long term future of the WM platform is very bright...and we'll even throw in some love for the non-business consumers out there VERY soon :)
I just finished up a nice trip to Orlando for the 2008 US Convergence show, and it was cool.

It was great to see and talk to so many customers and partners about the thriving ecosystem around MS Dynamics. But it was equally as cool as talk to them about mobility. No doubt about it, all of these folks wanted to know more about mobility and how they could take advantage of it.

We keep hearing about how the smartphone/converged device space will take off, but it's really nice to see it for yourself first-hand. And we're only looking at the tip of the ice berg. I have said this before, this space is exploding...we should all be happy to be a part of it!

On another note, I wanted to remind you all of some very coo ROI and TCO tools that we have available around Windows Mobile. If you are a certified or Gold Microsoft Partner, you can get access to these tools here.

I expect that the presence of Windows Mobile at the Convergence shows will definitely increase over time, as will our penetration into small, medium, and large businesses.

<img style="border-right: 0px; On a totally unrelated note, I was walking through Downtown Disney (yes, it deserves it's own special name with capital letters, evidently) and saw this in the window of the Virgin Megastore display. Yes, American Hair Metal!

Although I was unable to find the book in the actual store, I have since found the bugger on eBay...it should be arriving in about 5-10 business days :)

Cheers,

Steve

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While supposedly making our lives easier, all of these options actually make our lives more complicated. We are simply overwhelmed by the options to stay in touch with each other. This is communication chaos.
Microsoft believes the answer lies in software. Software that is people-ready, helping people to work more effectively together in real time. Unified Communications solutions provide presence awareness throughout Office System and LOB applications, enable teams to work together from distributed offices and while on the go, and reduce down time and hasten business decisions. Microsoft's UC solutions deliver identity-based, rich presence-enabled communications on the desktop and extend those capabilities to Windows Mobile devices with Office Communicator Mobile 2007. Communicator Mobile 2007 is designed to easily work with existing Office Communications Server 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 deployments, minimizing cost, management, and additional infrastructure investments.
Enjoy the show!
Steve

SAP and Windows Mobile - what's your story?

I work with different partners everyday, and I also work with enterprises and business everyday as well. In enterprises, I often get asked the question:

'What partners do you have that do X?'

Well, right now I am looking for something specific. How many of you guys have a solution for Windows Mobile that interfaces with SAP? Yes, I do have a handful of partners who are skilled here (including SAP), but I'd like to broaden this particular piece of our partner portfolio.

So, if you have a good solution that connects Windows Mobile to SAP on the backend, I'd love to hear from you :)

Now, get back to reading Reed's sweet post on memory management :)

Enterprise Mobility: is it ready for Prime Time?

Okay, so obviously I already have an opinion, and it's very strong. I believe from all of the evidence that I have witnessed first hand that enterprises are ready to start rolling out (and have been for several quarters) truly converged mobile devices (aka, Windows Mobile devices) that support business.

The mechanism for this support started as email, but now the focus is on line of business applications (LOB).

If you read any analyst report on the subject over the last year, they'll all concur. They differ with respect to the size of the market, or when the really BIG shift will happen (sometime between 2008 and 2010), but they all agree that LOB will drive mobile devices.

I just read a pretty good Forrester Report on this. I've included the exec summary (which is published on the Forrester web site) below:

"Forrester broadly defines enterprise mobility as the ability for an enterprise to communicate with suppliers, partners, employees, assets, products, and customers irrespective of location. Mobility requires firms to build solutions that span devices, networks, and applications. After several fits and starts, mobility is gaining steam, consuming nearly one-third of North American and European enterprise telecom budgets today. Firms have embraced mobile email and plan to extend this capability to more employees within the organization. Advanced firms are moving line-of-business applications like inventory management and sales force automation to handhelds today. The greatest shift in the mobility market over the next three years will be the move to line-of-business and unified communications applications on handhelds to drive business process acceleration."

While I can't quote it without paying an arm and a leg, I can tell you that they also agree. It's actually a pretty good read if you, like me, believe that these crazy devices will someday revolutionize how we interact with our work life.

So, I'd like to share a HUZZAH to all of us who are evangelizing out in the field. People are listening to us, and the market is changing...one deal at a time :)
