PSST...its coming...and someday, it may help save your life

What role should software play in critical patient care?  Maybe, Just a collection of back office applications that are used for administrative, bookkeeping purposes?  Perhaps, as a set of physician/clinician tools for after hours research.  Better yet, a rich set of comprehensive capabilities that can coexist transparently with traditional workflow's/procedures and bring vast amounts of insight and information to the point of critical patient care.
