&lt;p&gt;In usage it has become linked with the tendency of people who look at code from an abstract/academic perspective to consider themselves and their attitudes superior to those who actually write code for a living...in essence it's another manifestation of Real Programmerism. It wasn't intended to be but it is. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Personally I don't have a lot of time for the ALT.NET movement given how much emphasis is put on writing code a certain way Because It Forces People To Do The Right Thing, and especially given that so many of its proponents actually think Active Record is a good idea.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It is not definable. &amp;nbsp;Like Zen it is better to say what it is not, than what it is.&lt;/p&gt;
