stuff
Spending the morning writing a presentation I'm giving in a couple of weeks. Didn't do as much as i would have liked, but oh well... My meetings start up soon - the first is our weekly meeting looking at windows server sp1.
i spend a bit of time on this a week - maybe not enough. Clyde Rodriguez who worked for me in my old group is doing a good job here - helped out by Don Pattee - who I always knew would be a great guy for that role. The project is looking good & should go out in the first part of next year. the problem is, as always, making sure things that got fixed stay fixed. I could be flippant & pretend this is not an issue for us - but all the way across the industry the problem of regressions - you fix something & it does stay fixed because something else breaks it along the line.
my belief on this is we really have to have much more automation focused on testing things early in the process of making a change. I think as an industry we've just got to lift our game - for me this starts with Microsoft doing it seriously. We've started but it's a long job. Just like security is a many year job. When we started the security push at Microsoft we all knew it was a multiyear job. We're 3 years in & xpsp2 shows we can lift the game. Windows server 2003 SP1 will show that even more then xpsp2 - but it's gonna take a while . I will rant on this more in the future, I think… (all that stuff was Wednesday but I didn't get around to posting it…)
Going to have dinner with Phil who was my best man tonight. In fact I am butting in on his dinner with Christian who is an old old friend & we spent part of today planning going snowboarding in march next year in Revelstoke BC we did cat-skiing in whistler last year & it was killer. So 4 days at this place http://www.catpowder.com/ is going to be awesome (going up there with charlie from work as well - http://www.kindel.com/blogs/charlie). It will be weird going to Zoe & not drinking - especially with those lushes.
