The IE IDC Team

I am Puneet Arora and I’m a Program Manager on the IE team at Microsoft’s India Development Center (IDC).  The team started just 6 months ago and has just the right mix of fresh engineering graduates full of zeal, people with prior experience and some old time Microsoft veterans.  The focus for the IDC team is making IE great for IT professionals.  For IE7 for both Windows XP and Windows Vista, the team has been working on some great features –

  • Group Policy - making more than 100 brand new settings available as policies in IE7.  This work empowers the IT admins to allow them to customize IE7 for enterprise users.

  • Compatibility Logging - when a security feature blocks a behavior, IE7 can be configured to write that failure to a log. Customers can identify issues that they might see due to new IE7 security features.

  • Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) - This will be an opt-in feature which will help us in getting the next level of feedback on how our users actually use our product, without getting any personally identifiable information. It will help us in further improving our features and tracking customer satisfaction.

  • IEAK 7 (Internet Explorer Administration Kit) - IEAK allows deployment, customization & management of IE packages for corporations.

Spongy, ever look at one of your own pictures years later only to then find one small thing that you wish you had taken two shots instead of one? With probably a few thousand people in the least reading this blog I'm sure there are problems that could be found in any and all pictures if you try hard enough.

Not to in any way defend outsourcing but what does Microsoft gain from hiring people in India over hiring people in America? Also at the time of this post no one whatsoever mentioned outsourcing in the IE China team post.

John, these are Microsoft employees working in India, not "outsourcing" as in a 3rd party. By having an IE team located at IDC, we can hire from an incredible local talent pool.

This isn't about hiring people in one country over another. Microsoft hires worldwide, not just in Redmond. North America isn't the only place on earth with great programming talent. That's why we have development centers in India, China, and Ireland, research centers in India, China, and England, and so forth.

Primary development of IE is in Redmond, where we're hiring for quite a few open positions. Check out the Microsoft Career site if you want specifics.

@John A. Bilicki III: Is it really necessary to ask "what does Microsoft gain from hiring people in India over hiring people in America?" It gains an educated, capable workforce at a reduced cost. It's really not much more complicated than that.

To the India IE Team, hopefully you don't take such resentment personally. Just a few years ago, IT in the U.S. seemed like an ever-expanding horizon of opportunity and generous compensation. The dot-com bomb was a painful kick in the groin, and as U.S. IT lay writhing on the ground, outsourcing and offshoring stepped in to land repeated body blows, threatening to make the U.S. IT glide path one of permanent decline.

Diminishing opportunity, substantially increased competition for desirable jobs, and the lurking fear that almost any position can be exported abroad are unsettling to say the least. And it’s a hard landing from the lofty expectations that led many into IT only a few years ago. That shouldn't diminish your sense of purpose and value, but it might explain some of the less-than-complimentary responses you may get.

Though not exactly glamorous, it looks like you have an important role in the development of the next version of IE. I wish you every success, in the hope that 7 will be the best IE yet.

I guess more than 30% of Microsoft employees are Indian origin. So isn't it better for Microsoft to go to India and start development centers there to get the same high quality work done there itself, instead of bringing people to Redmond?
That's all Microsoft did.

Why use 4 different ways to determine which filetype to block for downloading. One seems enough. The thing that matters is what people actualy can't download. IE might use a combination of ways to determine that but that is not very relevent as an option setting.

Why would you have different settings on those 4 options to block downloading.

What I would like is some predifined roles that you can use in stead of just deafault settings. If you have to manage more than 100 settings it would be easier if you have a choice of roles which determine most or even all settings.

The compatability logging feature is a great idea, and one that'll make admin's lives MUCH easier.

In particular, it should really help when trying to figure out what to add to trusted sites to make some hideously complex and maze-like web app sites (full of frames loading from other servers, JavaScript, and so on) actually work on a machine with a secured copy of IE.

Great to see such an example of markets working. I've worked with Indian computer graduates myself, the average level of enthusiasm, maths and general understanding was about the same as the top few students at the British university I attended.

Besides, all the good USAian computer scientists have moved to Google! The web is where the exciting work is,while browsers are a solved problem thanks to Mozilla, even if not (yet) by MS.

Bugzilla is an awesome idea, much better than the 'feedback' link in the help menu (which points to the wrong place apparently, cos the IE feedback team got my email instead of the IE7 team.

but yeah, bugzilla would be an awesome addition to /all/ microsoft applications.

Кстати, второй справа в верхнем ряду - срочно проверьте личное дело его. Кажется у него неустовные отношения с девушками, - проверьте по комментариям - если коментариев много в коде - значит так и есть! А то иш - рога уже наставил.

Четвертый справа, в нижнем ряду - сомнительный тип, на фото у него шнурки развязаны - так ходят только линуксоиды! Да и красный огонь в глазах - нехорошо, недосмотрели.

Microsoft is wayyy behind in web-based programs like IE. I dont know the "Authentic" requirement which is "obsessive"ly present now a days in each and everything from MS. I bought a notebook about a month ago with "Authentic" OS and other softwares installed on it. I had tried installing IE 7.0 beta trial version on my notebook but failed repeatedly as the "authenticity" of my OS could not be determined inspite of me providing the necessary details. way to go MS!!! after all, who would you like to cater to and how do u intend to get a feedback?
Yeah, I should agree that Mozilla and Netscape are gaining popularity while MS is lagging behind.

Well John, you might not be knowing the Business Potential in India for Microsoft or for that matter, any other IT firm. Stop having myopic views on things beyond your comprehension.
You might not have known the dedication and out-of-the-way commitment, which asians can offer in completion of a given job.
Microsoft knows that there is a vast business potential in Asia, especially in India and China. Thus it has setup development centers based on its requirements.

The reality is that IE7 is very good and does a good job living up to the W3C standards and if you look at any tracking sites, Firefox/Mozilla programs are so far behind IE in use that it's not funny. IE is still 90% of all browsers and you guys really seem to not know how to configure your systems because IE7 doesn't "crash 7 times a day" if you have it decently configured and know what you're doing. If you don't like IE, don't use it. If you don't like Windows, use *NIX, but pay close attention to security websites and vulnerability websites because *NIX is very insecure, very holey, very unstable (in general), and is only used by companies because it is cheap. You should also note that Microsoft and many other companies have complained that there is a shortage of good CS people here, so they are going elsewhere. Any CS person who is good can find a job in the US, so if you are complaining about not having a job, why don't you learn your trade...
