Update on the feed icon

I recently posted about the search for an icon to represent feeds in IE7. We’ve found one. It’s orange. Check it out.

Excellent idea to standardise the icon. Hopefully webmasters will start using the same logo on their websites so people new to RSS will see a common approach. I'll be updating the icons I use to match very soon.

Will the term "Live Bookmarks" also be standardized between IE and FireFox?

I doubt it - IE's always used Favourites instead of Bookmarks. Actually, I lie, it's always used Favorites even on en-gb Windows.

Excellent! You picked a new icon!
Can you fix alpha channel display transparency errors in IE 6's PNG display now?

If people just could stick to the subject.

It's tiresome to read about all the fix this and fix that comments that are off topic.

Look, why don't you cooperate with the Mozilla guys on a bigger issue: The rendering engine.

What if IE could use Gecko (or one of the other open source rendering engines, for that sake). This would benefit users, and certainly web developers, as there would be more standardization in how web sites are displayed.

Then the IE team could focus on making a great user interface, among other features.

Vidar: While your suggestion is like sweet music too meine ears, it is (sadly) never going to happen. It would be too much loss of face for MS.

Sweet :) Consistency is good...and it's a nice icon anyways.

Fred Vorck, please stick to the subject. They told us months ago that the PNG bug will be fixed.

Here's the link: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx

Uhm... Who are you?, and what have you done with Microsoft?

Surely this isn't Microsoft... Standardizing on something a *different* company created?

Wow! I can see it now... "January 2006, Microsoft standardizes on Open Document Format (ODF) for consistency, and ease of implementation for both users and developers."

Am I dreaming?

Is there some place to download this icon in various formats and sizes?

Great news!

Make sure you offer some good documentation to wewbdevs on how to make IE automatically show the icon, just like FF does... I guess you guys are going to use the same detection mechanism (the "link" element on the head)... ?

I am a Linux user as well as a Windows user... Speaking for myself and others, I am glad that we are finally standardizing the icons for all this stuff... Maybe they might compete by offering the Internet Explorer program for Linux that works like Galeon and Konqueror...

@LinWinOverlord

Perhaps after that, they will open-source the Linux IE? Come on!! Microsoft's ONLY MOST VIABLE OS COMPETITOR IS LINUX!!! If someone wanted to port IE to Linux (They have ported IE to UNIX before, but it was strictly for Solaris SPARC platform), they would have to make a version that would run through GTK+ and Qt in their respective Desktop types (GNOME and KDE)... next thing you know, Microsoft will make a X Desktop Manager for Linux that runs through the X server as a substitute for GNOME or KDE. Perhaps after that, they will *secretly* build a special version of the Linux kernel that is designed for Windows NT kernel 6.1... Now THAT I would like to see... If I were to even have a hint of that, I would have to be an MSDN member first though... So, if anyone knows if ANY of this is coming true, make a blog about it!

--and before I get chastized for rushing a possibly-buggy product, remember that independent sites and the public are FAR better at finding bugs. http://secunia.com/ and others prove that easily.

All you havta do is smash 'em as they crawl by.

so, thats cool, glad to hear it, but why does THIS site not USE the icon then?

I scanned the page, looking for the icon, so that I could grab the RSS feed link to use in my feed agregator... but was miffed to see that it wasn't even on the site!

E.g. where you have this link on the main page, on the right (I did find it, in the end)
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/rss.aspx

It should have the icon placed nearby so that users know where to go.

Though the color is good, and also the design is excellent, it simply does not convey the idea of a feedback.
The first idea it gave to me was of an ongoing updating. Second idea, of a broadcasting.
In both cases, I got the sensation of something beaming towards my machine, or my machine doing something without my intevention.

It may sound naive, but a hand handing over a ticket might give better the idea of providing a feedback.

The icon you have now seems like waves going into the ether, but does NOT suggest that it should be the surfer to generate them.
A feedback is a shout. Your icon is the waves generated by a shout, but who's shouting? It suggested to me it was sort of a Pointcast pushing technology, that Microsoft was shouting data into my machine.
