Sample RSS Screensaver

Walter has posted details about the RSS Screensaver sample that’s recently gone live on MSDN.

If you have IE7 Beta 2 Preview installed (and who doesn’t?), subscribe to a couple of photo feeds (RSS feeds with pictures as enclosures – examples are in Walter’s post) and the screen saver will automatically pick them up using the Windows RSS Platform that powers IE7’s RSS features.

More samples using the RSS platform will be coming soon. Of course, if you have any of your own, let us know about it, and we’ll post a pointer.

In the meantime, check it out!

 - Sean

Update: Link updated to be a non-relative url.

The installer is broken.

It can be "installed", "removed" or "repaired", but has no screensaver (except maybe one, if any, that doesn't show up on the screen saver list).

"If you have IE7 Beta 2 Preview installed (and who doesn’t?)"

I'd be VERY careful saying that, and a liar too--so many are in unrequited love with Firefox that they don't care.

Don't gloat.  The top of the heap isn't guaranteed.

i don't have ie7 beta 2 preview installed either, and won't until there's a stable way to install it side-by-side with older versions.

I just tested the link and it works fine. Can you be more specific about the problem with it?

"If you have IE7 Beta 2 Preview installed (and who doesn’t?)"

I had to go back to Beta 1 because Beta 2 breaks McAfee.

Why does IE7 break all google related sites?

# re: Sample RSS Screensaver

Ah... it seems that the link is broken if you view this post through the RSS reader, because the link in the RSS reader uses "go.microsoft.com" instead of "blogs.msdn.com".

"If you have IE7 Beta 2 Preview installed (and who doesn’t?)"

Linux users, Apple users, Windows 95, 98, ME (God help them), and the ones that don't have SP2 for XP.

A really stupid question.

I don't! The constant BSOD with some tcpip.sys stuff was getting *slightly* annoying.

Next time I'll put an explicit "smiley" after the "and who doesn't?". :)

For those who might be having problems installing, the sample installs source and documentation. You'll can build it yourself using Visual Studio 2005 (and who doesn't have that? :)

On Walter's post, there's also a link to a compiled version if you don't want install it yourself.

There seems to be a bug with our server software about it removing the domain name from hyperlinks if they are in the same name. I'll escalate it with the guys that run the site.

Took me a while, and an extra look at the rss team post, to figure it out.

"You'll can build it yourself using Visual Studio 2005 (and who doesn't have that? :) "

Nicely said.  I've got it running.

Now to check for sites that have RSS picture feeds that work in IE 7 (and who doesn't have that? :)

# re: Sample RSS Screensaver

Monday, March 06, 2006 8:19 AM by Alistair Young
Well, I don't have IE 7b2 *because* I have Visual Studio 2005...

...there seems to be an irritating wee issue in which IE7 breaks the Document Explorer, and so, no help in Visual Studio, et al., and I can't seem to find a workaround for that. And so.

(Although, when I have used it, I should say, I like it rather a lot. Looking forward to a b3 with that issue resolved, dare I hope soon?)

"and who doesn't"...

Uhm, Win98 users, Win98SE, WinME, Win2k, anyone on a locked system, Linux users, Mac users..

I second the "don't brag on this" IE failed us before, it is a wee bit early to be counting chickens...

I remember somebody once said: "DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS!"

Not sure who that was though :-)

And I left my sense of humour somewhere back with IE 5.5...

I had a little trouble to being with, but overall it was easy going. I'm having trouble integrating other rss feeds into the screensaver, myself. I'm not sure if I've found one that works yet.

Don't you think guys that would be more important to correct CSS bugs instead of screensavers...

"If you have IE7 Beta 2 Preview installed (and who doesn’t?)"

Web designers, web developers, web masters and web mistresses, considering the fact we cannot text what our viewers are seeing on their versions of MSIE while running the beta.

I'll be honest, after checking out the launch of Live Search (I like 5% of it so far), and coping with the issues with jumping on the SECOND XBOX bandwagon (and already sending it back for problems), I am ready for Microsoft to just keep at what we don't complain (that much) about.

I'll use Internet Explorer when I DON'T have to hack perfectly coded CSS to adjust to one browser's shortcomings.

CSS is the future, and IE is like an 80's child still wearing leg-warmers and scrunchies.

I noticed that the registered partner site does not work properly with IE 7. And will not work with Firefox as well. The site in IE 7 when going to renew membership shows the navigation bar, nothing below it, the menu's are so transpararent that you can't read them as they fall on other text. In firefox the agreement shows up but you can not click I agree. IE 7 also seems to browse slower than IE 6, at least through ISA Server 2004 and ISA Server 2000. Seems to me that at this rate IE 7 will not be ready for Longhorns release. (Or Longwait as a MS employee referred to it.) It is a shame. I like a lot of the features of IE 7. Even if it doesn't seem to be handling all of CSS properly.

Presumably he was using a server OS for his workstation.  Or perhaps it was a test server.  Or perhaps he's developing a server product that will use IE7 components.
