Great Photoshopping!

Two minor quibbles:

1) The lighting change near the top right of the e looks too sudden, maybe a gradient like near the bottom would be better?

2) The registered trademark sign looks OK near the words 'Windows' and 'Internet Explorer' but spoils the look of the graphic.

But generally it looks very nice!

Well I do prefer a retread of the older logo versus another Firefox knock-off. I'm still shaking my head when I compare Firefox's RSS feed icon to the 45 degree rotated IE Web Feed icon. Back to IE, not so crazy about the spacing between the indivdual font letters though the graphic itself is pleasant and modern.

For some reason, i don't really like it, MS seems to moving more and more away from their XP style palette's for the new icons, WMP is a perfect example, this icon just doesn't do it for me, i suppose it's just my opinion.

As a Microsoft partner, IE7 beta tester and a system administrator of a large enterprise network, I find this blog post offensive.

The fact that you have found the time to play with the logo while this platform is being attacked through the browser from nearly all angles is very troubling.

Spend less time on the eye-candy and put in more time making sure you're delivering a secure product.

Oh come on people. I dislike IE as much as the next guy, but give them a break! It's not like the people working on this logo could actually be fixing security, they're graphic designers!

On an unrelated note, do you think there are enough (R) signs in there? I don't know, somebody might concievably not realize that Microsoft's product names and logos are registered trademarks. Better put seven more in, scattered all over like confetti, just to be sure. And also make sure that they are only three pixels wide so you can't actually read them.

Nice job on the logo - greatly improved. If the feature set of the new browser turns out as nicely as the logo those folks still using IE will be in for a much deserved treat.

Putting on the flame proof jacket, I have to comment that my initial reaction was that the newly refined 'e' looks like it was taken right out of the early Mac OSX Aqua designs concepts (ala the 10.1 & 10.2 era) which is obviously intended as a compliment. From Pirates of the Silicon Valley: "Good artists copy - great artists steal" All in good fun kids.

This one looks much much better than the one in beta 1 and better than the ie6 icon. That icon stood out pretty well but the beta icon looked awful.

You talked about how the new icon stands out better against different backgrounds. Maybe in the future, you guys could implement dynamic icons. I think mentioned this in my other post. Say against a darker background, the icon would change to a more brighter color? Just something for the gui team to chew on.

Are there any plans to update other icons in IE? For example, the internet zone icon looks horrid and outdated. It doesn't look very consistent and professional when some icons look nice and others don't.

I like the logo, it's a much different feel from the same IE icon we've seen since version 3. But one thing caught me more than the trademark signs, is the name of the browser officially changing from "Microsoft Internet Explorer" to "Windows Internet Explorer"?

Pretty nice revamp indeed. Agreed on the "®" sign next to the "E".
Of course everything in the world is a ripoff of MacOS X and the little precious Firefox, and certainly NEVER do design, EVER - bugs, bugs and bugs, take care of that and fire the designers. I want my computer ugly, bug-free (in my belief) and with a clickable link to promote it (my computer) everywhere.

Seriously - not bad, but give them designers a few more days to think a bit more, I'm certain they will come up wih something better, and I'm sure that the Vista version will be stunning sexy.

Very nice indeed!

I really love how IE7 is going. It's fast, looks good, and I believe you guys will make it secure as well. I switched from firefox after using IE7 Beta 1 for an hour - The speed! So long as that sort of page rendering speed is in the final, IE7 is a winner.

Nobody likes to do bugfixes all day long, every day (especially not the Microsoft Design Team). Great job guys, love the new icon, can't wait for the Vista version :)

Now while you're at it, *please* update the rest of the icons that IE uses. The icons in the Internet Options dialog box haven't been touched since IE4.

And also, one thing that's always irked me: The icon in the very upper-left of the IE window. It is an IE 5-style icon (the "e" on a sheet of paper). The icon in the address bar and the status bar is the correct XP-style icon, but the upper-left icon is still old. Even on IE7 on Vista it's the old icon. Please fix this! It would take like 2 seconds to replace the old style .ico file in the IE source tree with the new one.

I would love to see any of the other concepts that were developed - I study multimedia design and work for a design/development company and it's always extremely interesting to see the path the designers at other companies took - yes we know the result, but the path is were the real coolness lays, so how about having a word with the MS design guys and posting some development sheets? I like it, more clean, serious, better than the one of the beta1 that look like rubber or gelly or something like that, but I would prefer the lettering used on beta1 (about dialog). I think Microsoft is making some good progress in the design of their products, Vista is looking really great.

Generally I like the refreshed logo, however I have one complaint which jumps out at me. The "after glow" on the ring comes off of the ring at too sharp an angle. Where ever the lighter color starts should be at an angle much closer to the ring at that part, which means you should either see less of it, or it should start further up on the ring.

Why does the main text have to be BLACK - so much more could be done - perhaps a subtle 3-D quality, or a subtle gradient (that would harmonize with the logo), or even given a slight angle.

You wanna hear about web standards? They posted about it on July 29th 2005, go post your thoughts in THAT post (http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/07/29/445242.aspx).

What is it with your FF fanboys anyways? They make improvements, you complain. They don't touch it, you complain. I swear you guys just like complaining for any reason whatsoever. We know IE7 will make alot of substantial improvements on standards, sure it doesn't pass that stupid acid2 test you guys spam all over the place but to my knowledge no browser does, especially not firefox.

Now don't get me wrong, I like firefox, and of the two out now its the better browser and I use it. I'll try out IE7 when its final is released then use whichever works best. However, some of you like to act like FF does no wrong, like its sheer perfection and whatever is does is to be worshipped. How many times did I hear that FF wouldn't have many exploits found if it grew in userbase? Now that its userbase is growing, more and more are being found at a consistantly faster rate so stop trying to pass off firefox as perfect, when no browser is.

Now with that off my chest, back to the topic at hand...

Its apparent you guys have been doing some great work with the icon. However I feel its too dark, I like the vibrant and colorful XP look, and this logo just simply doesn't fit the look. I think the gold band might work nicely, but the blue E needs to be lightened in color.

Also why does it say windows internet explorer, rather than microsoft internet explorer?

I like the new, larger version of the logo. However, the darker icon in the Quick Launch bar gets lost with the default Windows XP theme. As a matter of fact, after I upgraded, I thought it had disappeared. :)

Great look guys. I just posted up on our blog about this and mentioned what the color yellow "means." At least in our Western civilization... and as much as a color can mean anything (more like suggest).

I agree about the kerning on the type. Needs just a skosh more tightening. But who am I to judge? The swoosh is a really nice touch, and I like the prominent placement of the highlight, glowing from within.

As for branding with Windows up front, I don't suppose I can ask for a Macintosh Internet Explorer 7 any time in the next couple of years? OK, don't worry about it. But for all those FF fanboys out there I'll have to say FF runs like garbage on my iBook. I tend to be way more productive when surfing on a PC running IE. Sorry, strange but true. It's just faster, pound for pound... (Begun, the flame wars have).

Oh and for you bugheads out there, I recently wrote a piece on the software in the space shuttle. I was being cheeky by saying Windows (and every other OS) is horrible, from an error rate standpoint, by comparison. That's true, but keep in mind NASA has no competition to worry about (for now, hehe), and can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on debugging and process with almost no time constraints...

Looks good, but the typeface stems (i.e., the vertical lines of the font's characters) seem to line up very irregularly in the words "Internet Explorer". When the words are positioned on top of each other (as shown above), it looks very noisy and awkward to me.

For example, the "r" in "Internet" and the "l" in "Explorer" for a distracting, jagged vertical line that actually leads me eyes away from the nice, new logo.

It's alright...needs more space between the top and bottom tail for low resolution versions (quick launch) according to the shrunken version I'm made.

The yellow slash works better at low resolutions as well versus old versions of the icon.

It's an improvement I'd say, but this is just the cover of a book that still needs a bit of revisioning. Watching, waiting, hoping...

I've never seen a pointless change MS could resist, so why not the icon AGAIN. Yes, the Beta 1 icon sucked. It is almost the color of my taskbay, so the quicklink practically fades in as if camoflaged. The background MS appears to be worried about is the default taskbar background in XP. Funny how they missed that the first time huh?

Regardless, there was nothing wrong with the IE 6 logo, and this is hardly a change. Yes, the swosh is gold. So what? Does it mean anything? Was the previous swosh in some way defective? Is everything going to have gold highlights and you had to make it all fit together? No? How about the glass effect for the E - very mac. Obviously vista isn't going to look like that, so what is the point, again its not like it is needed to make the whole app's look and feel pull together.

Yes, it looks fine, why did you waste time and money doing this??? You have a browser that doesn't mean basic standards, and you waste time redesigning a perfectly acceptable logo???

Please tell me MS has better sense that that. This is practically a scene out of Dilbert. So, which one of the team is the phb then?

Incidently, I see that you've made it a big logo we'll never see (I think I've invoked the about dialog 12 times since MS first released IE back in 95, which is less than twice a year). I'm guessing that if you scale the icon down to 32x32, it will look remarkably like the IE6 logo with a yellow smudge on it. Once you hit 16x16, it will probably be little more than a blue E.

Yes, this blog format is just like the original, only the columns are backwards. Personally, I hate right-gutter info columns. Not quite as much as the full screen eye-strain white that you just changed back from, so it is technically an improvement, but I do find the left-gutter info column more natural.

No. They have graphic designers that do that. Nobody who could be adding standards support is "wasting time" with Icons. Come on, it's just a logo. Who cares that the edges of the letter are darker or a specific font is used??? I'd rather have 99% of the time spent on the logo devoted to making the actual software secure and stable. If you really believe the "gold ring...brings in new energy" you've been hanging out in Marketing too long. Have you ever heard anyone outside of a focus group say something as absurd and pretentious as, "You know, I didn't think much of this product, but that gold ring on the logo really brings in new energy. I think I will buy it after all." Give me a break.

Zardoz, CareyT, Doug Wright, Peter, and Bob Andrew - It apparently escaped your attention that this post came from the people who worked on the logo. Other posts in this blog come from people assigned to work on bugs, security, and so on. Those people ARE working on the issues you cite, and if you had bothered to read the other posts in this blog, you'd have seen that.

Regarding the letter spacing, the font appears to be Trebuchet MS bold, and it does look like the kerning was adjusted by hand; type the same words in Notepad with that font and they'll line up differently. There's still something about it that looks out of whack, though. I'd run it by the typography experts.

I am sorry guys, but what is so nice on this logo? Personally I think there is nothing new except bad placed name “Windows” which indicates that IE7 is only for Win platform  Well, nothing special unfortunately, MS should start learn more from its competitors. The icons are somewhat more appealing, visually anyway. I like the colour sceme and the shine to it. how ever. How much of it can you see back in the end result? Will the icon not be small in Iexplorer itself? Or is it more focused on the desktop link? The registered trademark signs are a bit annoying though. Three (R)'s?

The seven is a bit bare though. I would have suggested making that one over as well. It's sad to see the same icon returning but it's also a very familiar trademark i suppose.

Personally i am still into Firefox. I'm curious to see if 7 can sway me. Good luck with programming, develoupment, marketing and designing the icons for Vista.

ps. It's too easy to flame and even easier to flame the bad persons. Kindly lay off designers who obviously are not programmers?

I'm glad you guys have made this readable with Firefox ... because that's all I'll ever use. You want me to consider IE again after hundreds of security holes and flaws, based on some cute logo? I can't believe they used the old, older, eldest design element there is when it comes to logos:

The infamous "Swoosh".

There have numerous articles, essays and probably books been written about the "Swoosh" and how many gazillion times this element has been used in logo designs and why not to use it anymore.

There was a time when the Swoosh (in IE7's case it's the "golden planetary ring") could be spotted as a design element in almost every new logo that was introduced - around the globe.
Especially during the hightime of the internet bubble (before the burst) all these fashionable, VC-funded startups thought it was a clever idea to use a swoosh whenever they wished to appear "techno" and " worldwide operating".

Now, apparently the bubble burst did not stop numerous companies to still incorporate the Swoosh as a part of their visual identity, despite the negative connection and image it had with all the internet and "global" hype.

To make a long story short, (dinner is waiting) i somehow could understand when a company that does their logo themselves and have no money to pay a designer would come up with the "unique" idea of a Swoosh for their logo....but Microsoft ?!

Like, they can't spare some cash for research and hiring an up to date designer ?

But then again, as a logo should always resemble the companies core values, maybe that's exactly what it does....?

Can't say I like the shading of the e any more. It's too dark, especially at the top. The black edges do not help it either; I could stand the black edges if the blue was lighter and more energetic, but instead it looks dark and foreboding.

Also, I really don't like the simplification of the comet; The way it originally cut the blue e was a great design element and gave the use of the swoosh at least a little credence.

It seems very much that it's an update for the sake of having gradient effects and an OS X-like appearance, rather than actually adding anything meaningful.

when you compare this new direction to the old icon it seems like this one is a half-baked concept on the way to the old one - not a progression.

the old one was an elegant solution - a simple symbol which could be reporduced easily in a single colour without need for ridiculous effects , glows and gradients.. in my opinion this is a backwards step...

on a positive note the simplicity of the type is refresshing.

I like it personally, yes I agree it is a little dark in places, but then again I couldn't do a better job (and I bet the majority of the complaining people couldn't either) so all in all I think it's an improvement.

Those people complaining, maybe you should spend more time doing whatever your jobs are than complaining about people not doing their jobs? Especially since as people have said, graphic designers are paid to design graphics...

in response to your message DJ - i AM a graphic designer. i AM paid to design graphics. which i must add is entirely irrelevant to myself (or anyone else for that matter) having a personal opinion and calling out what is in reality a backwards step.

i am not claiming that my skills are in any way superior to the designer/s who may have worked on the new mark (not really a new mark as such but a reworking of the current mark) - however sometimes when you are so entrenched in a project it is hard to step back and take a subjective look at the work you are producing - which is one of the reasons why feedback is a VERY important part of the design process.

bah.. who really cares what mark they go with anyway.. they lost the race years ago.. you know what they say about dead horses..
