Considering most schools believe that Windows 98 and IE6 are the best educational tools on a computer, most school administrations wouldn't look at this. :)

"VANCOUVER, BC — It took a while longer but Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 did not survive the hacker onslaught at this year’s CanSecWest Pwn2Own contest.

A security researcher named “Nils” (he declined to provide his full name) performed a clean drive-by download attack against the world’s most widely used browser to take full control of a Sony Vaio machine running Windows 7.

He won a cash prize and got to keep the hardware. Details of the vulnerability, which was described by contest sponsor TippingPoint ZDI as a “brilliant IE8 bug!” are being kept under wraps.

Several members of Microsoft’s security response team were on hand to witness the successful exploit."

So when is the patch for IE8 Final? ;)

Web slices are the best. Is this a feature that will be specific to IE or will users of other browsers be able to benefit from this really neat feature?

Allthough correct to mention that IE8 was hacked yesterday your selective quoted information does not show that at the same say Safari, IE8 and Firefox were all hacked at CanSecWest Pwn2Own contest. Safari even multiple times with different exploits.

Since the Microsoft Security Response team was present at the the hacking contest and the organisers provide details to the vendor it is likely the vunerability will be fixed soonish in the regular update proces.

The webslices specification are availiable for use by all browser. The specs are available trough public domain licensing.

Microsoft even provided additional OSP patent licensing on this technology thus making sure that there can not be any possible patent riscs from Microsoft in using the technology in other browsers.

Shouldn't there be a blog post on here announcing that? What the heck? Couldn't we get a little longer lead time between announcement of when it will be released and the actual release? Yes, I have gone through and (briefly) tested my sites with the release candidate, but if I knew that the full release was coming out I would have scheduled a more in-depth look with all my sites.

Ah well. I'm just glad to hear the news.

I feel very, very sorry for anyone stuck in a draconian office that insists on forcing ridiculous restrictions on end users.

The whole reason why users have a homepage is so that they can customize where they start when they use the web. I don't ever want anyone to tell me where to go. Ever!

If I ever join a company that enforces this kind of garbage I will quit right there on the spot.

Unbelievable! This is 2009!

There were hundreds of active bugs in connect for broken and regression behavior in IE8 RC1.

Have these all been updated to indicate the current fixed status?

Thank you for this feedback.

At this time we do not plan on fixing this issue in the IE8 time frame. We appreciate the report, but unfortunately we are at a stage where need to choose what we work on to maximize the value for customers and web developers.

We will track the issue and hope to address it in a future version of IE.

After RC1 was released they gave up on fixing anything except critical security issues. Which is quite sad because IE8 RC1 was still riddled with bugs.

I can't wait to test and see how many things are still broken. I've already suggested to I.T. that we continue rolling out Firefox to all users, and block IE8 downloads.

That post did not say "we will be releasing IE8 on March 19th, be ready". People that followed the IE Blog didn't know anything beyond just make this work with the release candidate that is available.

So any instructions on how to upgrade for those of us with the RC? They had that in the past. I'm wondering if there will be one for this too.

And here is a question for the IE team: will IE8's Jscript engine eventually get ported to IE7 just like how JScript 5.7 was eventually ported to IE6?

@Brian: You can simply install the final RTW build over the RC build (which will be replaced automatically). I am not aware of plans to bring JScript 5.8 back to downlevel IE versions, but you should probably ask on the JScript team blog.

@Lucas: The statement "they gave up on fixing anything except critical security issues" is incorrect. We actually fixed a significant number of critical issues of all types, including many reported by the community.
