Long awaited 64-bit PDF IFilter finally available.

Finally we have a 64 bit PDF IFilter - surprisingly the solution is not from Adobe or Microsoft, but from a company called Foxit Software. The IFilter is compatiable with the following Microsoft products: Windows Indexing Service, MSN Desktop Search, Internet Information Server, SharePoint Portal Server, Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Site Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server and all other products based on Microsoft Search technology.

There's one simple workaround to get the filter running on 64 bit MOSS 2007. The steps are given below.

1.       Install Foxit 64bit PDF Ifilter. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/ifilter/

2.       Add a pdf extension in MOSS search settings

3.       Open regedit, locate [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Setup\ContentIndexCommon\Filters\Extension\.pdf]

4.       Change the default value to {987f8d1a-26e6-4554-b007-6b20e2680632} .

5.       Recycle the search service: net stop osearch
                                              net start osearch

6.       Start a full crawl to index your pdf documents :)

In three ways this ifilter is better than adobe's.

1. It supports multi-threading, which can lead to a better performance. [it's said our sql team worked with them and tested it]

2. It supports x64, and IA64 version is in testing, although there is no ia64 moss.

3. It's not adobe!

Is the above install/workaround procedure the same for WSS 3.0 as for MOSS 2007??

Thank you, Tom

Tom, although I haven't tried it myself, I believe the foxit ifilter works with WSS 3.0 as is, without any modifications.Let us know if you find any discrepencies:)

# WSS 3.0 and IFilter (sad)

We tried it in our organization and didn't have any luck. For one, the osearch service doesn't exist. The registry keys didn't exist either.

Kyle, have you tried contacting FOXIT with the problem? They claimed it was compatiable with WSS.

I'll debug the issue and post an update soon.

Kyle, the problem is most likely that you're trying to install it on the wrong server.  In a medium-to-large farm environnment, you need to install the iFilter on your app server and your database server(s) (though the latter does not have the osearch service, it's still necessary for indexing).

Also, the manual registry change is no longer necessary for Foxit's latest release of the filter.

Cheers,

Peter

Any chance of indicating what exactly will be in the "filter pack", and when in June/July you expect to release it?  Any chance of posting a beta version of this pack for testing?

A single installable package (even better if it were in Windows Update) will help us eliminate code that does registry checks on persistenthandler keys, etc, or code that depends on the google desktop search API (which we would desperately love to get rid of).

The release timeline for filter pack was pushed back to august. It's going to be a single Msi that'll register all the available filters for WDS/ Indexing service.

We might have a Beta, but it's still TBD.

Thank you for your response Deb.  Such a filter pack will be really useful, and we are looking forward to its release in August.

How will you handle an x64 install where most ifilters to be installed are x64 but some are x86 only?  In other words, on x64 will the x86 only ifilters install for use as 32 bit ifilters?

# re: Long awaited 64-bit PDF IFilter finally available.

Tuesday, July 17, 2007 2:32 AM by Deb Haldar

Larmen, we'll be dropping x64 only filters for x64 OS and x86 only filters for x86 OS.

The senario of installing 32 bit MOSS on 64 bit OS is not officially supported.

Thanks,

Deb.

Am I missing something or does nobody notice that this iFilter costs $329.99 per CPU? How is this better than Adobe?

Kale, it does not cost $329.99 per CPU.  That is the server cost that covers up to 2 CPU.

quote from Peter Brunone:

I apologize for if this is question has already been answered, but it this a necessary step for the Foxit iFilter for PDF files? We have it installed on our app server, but not on our database server (these are separate machines). I seem to remember the Foxit install docs saying only to install on the app server.

Thanks very much!

Regards,

Kevin

Kevin, if you're just looking to index files with sharepoint search, installing it on the App server is sufficient.

The only scenario you'd want to install the FOXIT filter on the database server is if you want to index pdf files through SQL full text search.

regards,

Deb.

I have just installed x32 FoxIT filter on a win2k3 box, I have followed the install instructions to get it working with SQL 2005 and it is not working.

I had previous had the Adobe IFilter 60 working just fine, but our production server is x64 so I wanted to demo their x32 first.

I couldn't get the Adobe filter to work but then I read about Foxit IFilter and installed it on Windows Server 2008 x64 running MOSS 2007 x64 and it works great. I haven't been able to get the PDF icon to show yet but I am working on that.
