One of our consultants, Jie Li did some initial benchmarking of the filter alongside the foxit 64-bit ifilter and found the adobe pdf filter to be about 5 times slower than it's Foxit counterpart. You can read about it on Jie's blog. The adobe filter, albeit slow, presents a zero cost solution to those in need of indexing pdf documents on a tight budget.

Good to hear.  But 5 times slower that FoxIt?  I wonder how much 32bit code is still part of Adobe's solution.

We just found out why it's 5 times slower :) Adobe is running an seperate component to carry out the parsing of documents and then channel that data back into our filtering process. It seems like the component can service only one filtering thread at a time, so on a QUAD CPU, only one thread is executing and the others are kept waiting in line to get services.

A quick look at processExplorer should make this apparent.

How is this iFilter different from the one 64 bit version released earlier this year?

The new one is all 64 bit binaries - the old one had 32 bit components. I think the architecture remains same - they're still using an out of proc component.

I have looked and can't seem to find the answer to this question.  If you are going to install a PDF iFilter for the WSS version of SharePoint (not Portal) what server(s) do you install it on?  The FE servers?  The SQL server(s)?  In Portal I know its the server that is defined as the Indexing Server but not sure in WSS.  Thanks in advanced.
