Check out this new Ribbon tab

Get Started tab in Word 2007

A few doors down the hall some mad scientists have been cooking up a great add-in for the Ribbons featured in 2007 versions of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. You can now add a Get Started tab in those applications and pull in some great content from our training and demos teams. The effort does more than simply add a tab, though. It shows developers how easy it is to make custom tabs in the Ribbon.

Here's some background from Judi Hurlock, an Office Online writer who lead the efforts:

In October 2006, Mark Alexieff, Senior Product Manager, contacted Jessica Reading and Jean Philippe Bagel for help with the Get Started Tabs. The project had two goals:

  • To help customers find 2007 Office demos, training, and other support materials available on Office Online by creating a Get Started Tab for the Office Fluent Ribbon, with links to content that would help customers get up to speed with the new UI in the first day/week of use.
  • To use the Get Started Tabs as an example of Ribbon extensibility for the developer audience.

Today, I’m very pleased to announce the availability of the Get Started Tabs on Office Online. The add-ins add a Get Started tab to the Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word 2007 Ribbon. Commands on these tab give easy access to free content on Office Online that help customers learn these 2007 Office system programs quickly.

And now, on to the links. You can get the add-in here. And see how to do it yourself here in an MSDN article.

Sounds great.

But (based on the above screenshot), you probably should have used the Office Word 2007 icon for the Word 2007 button, not a Word 2003 document icon.

Looks like the final version has all the icon goodness it should have upon install. This image is from the article on MSDN. The change request shall commence shortly. And thanks for the catch!

Could not get it to work.  "A runtime error occured when loading the add-in."  Very frustrating.

I have tried it for two weeks.  I was told they invested a lot of R&D on this item.  I find it takes for mouse clicks and more arm movement to do the things I do.  It's pretty like Clippy, and as useful.  It's not efficient for me.  Is there a "restore classic UI" button or do I have to hide the ribbon bar and add all those icons I need to the quick access bar?  Help!

I downloaded the add-in. But it did not install on the "Fluent" ribbon. Each of the three Get Started add-ins are listed in my "add or remove programs" but I also cannot uninstall them and get error messages "invalid drive c" and "fatal error during installation". So, they are neither installed on the ribbon and they are not able to be removed via "add or remove programs"! My laptop runs XP. A real bummer. I did successfully install them on a Vista machine.

I am sorry to say that I find the Office Ribbon the least productive part of ANY upgrade I have ever seen. I have been using Word for just about 18 years, most of my working life, & I can say without any reservation that Office 2007 is the biggest drain on my productivity in that period.

How this is supposed to make things any better is beyond me, & as I advise my customers on all things IT they are not interested in anything that will disrupt their staff to this extent.

I have no idea what sort of UI testing was done (although I accept that there must have been a lot), but things that used to be simple are now hidden, hard to find or simply incomprehensible.

That I have spent 15 mins finding a half way suitable place to air my thoughts highlights my deep frustration with this version of Office.

Don't get me started on Vista, if I manage a day without a crash that's a good day. I have given up trying to copy to & from network drives, it just doesn't work.

Sorry for the rant, but MS must accept that there are people who are very, very unhappy with this software & could have done something better to help us adapt (the old menus available for example).

Our call centre personel tell us that they have, so far, not found this feature to be much of an aid to productivity. They'e just experienced a complete refit with furniture from www.theglassoffice.co.uk and they tell us that the new seating etc. is much more beneficial than this new ribbon tab.

It’s difficult to keep up with all the changes with the menu items, as once you had office 2000 set-up and working well along comes something completely new and different.

I still prefer the simpler version as I’ve used it for a long time so the new needs some time to get used to..

I've been using this new "Ribbon" thing for the last few weeks. Despite all the hoopla, the "Ribbon" has played havoc with my productivity. I've used Office apps (mainly Excel and Word) for more years than I care to remember. I do not see any reason to invest time (a VERY precious commodity to me) and energy to learn a whole new interface. I also consider it to be quite arrogant on Microsoft's part not to provide an option to use the older interface. On older machines, Office usually came pre-installed. Now there's the trial version and MS wants more $$$ for a "full" version. Let's see. Do I really want to shell out more $$$s for the new version of Office that I can barely stand?

This reminds me of the arrogant attitude IBM had about their software and OS/2 (anyone remember that) back in the early 90s.

Oh well! I'm off to try out OpenOffice. The menus & UI appear to be much closer to the ones I was used to. Then there's Google Apps. If any one of those choices works out, I guess MS will be losing another Office customer.

Saxen.co.uk is a great site and well worth a visit but i also found another site in xsfurniture.co.uk they supply a large selection of cafe bistro furniture, office furniture & home furniture, also they operate a free delivery service through out the uk, they are currently building one of the biggest online furniture stores in the uk, large discounts available on large orders, also great prices for the customer looking for a singe item, home furniture is a new range and well worth a look, office furniture is very competitively priced, cafe bistro furniture is one of the best selection i have seen online, all products in stock and ready to ship. Go and have a look its going to be the biggest  online furniture store in the near future.

Once upon a time, the notion of shopping for home furniture, Home office furniture & Bistro furniture over the internet seemed about as crazy as buying your clothing online. But now that apparel has outpaced computer equipment and software in online sales, the idea of buying home furniture, Home office furniture & Bistro furniture online doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

Buying home furniture, Home office furniture & Bistro furniture online has its risks. The only way to truly know what you’re getting is to examine a piece in person, so you can test its comfort, durability, scale and finish, then look for the identical object online. Barring that, your best bet is to buy from a reputable dealer, study the listing carefully, call and ask questions, then examine the return policy before you purchase.

While I haven’t visited every furniture Web site in the world, there are a number that keep me coming back time and again, because of their quality, selection, ease of use and customer satisfaction. XSFurniture.co.uk is a very reliable and well established furniture company dealing in home furniture, Home office furniture, Bistro furniture & bedroom furniture, they are a relatively new company to the market but have a large selection of furniture to suite everybody’s taste, fast delivery times on most products with very minimum negative feedback for the amount of turnover they generate . XSFurniture.co.uk is exactly what the market needs quality, reliability & great saving to be made on all lines of furniture & soft furnishings.

There are millions of online home furniture stores. Who to buy from? It’s a mine field, usually if the company appears on the first couple of pages on Google they are usually a very reliable company who have put a lot of effort and money into there business with good customer relations, however this is not always the case always take time to check out the company that you are dealing with.

Before you buy a cell phone, a dishwasher or a new computer you talk to friends, read reports, comparison shop. But do you invest the same amount of time and preparation in home furniture shopping? After all, a good sofa or dining table will cost more than those items and will usually last longer.

I asked designers, salespeople and industry experts to describe the most common mistakes furniture shoppers make. Here’s a summary of their responses, along with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim.

Lack of Preparation

People often go home furniture shopping without any sense of what they like, their long-term goals, or even something as basic as the dimensions of the room. Before you visit your first home furniture store, draw up a floor plan of the space you’re shopping for, including all measurements. (You can also prepare a plan using an online room planner such as Better Homes and Gardens’ Arrange-a-Room or the Jordan’s Furniture Room Planner.) Take some photographs of the room, and go through design magazines and tear out photos of homes or home furniture pieces that appeal to you. Bring paint samples from the room, along with swatches of carpet and fabric from the other furnishings. If you don’t have a fabric swatch, remove the cover from a cushion and bring it with you. Pack these clippings in a file folder or portfolio and bring it with you when you shop.

Think about your long-term plans for the room: Do you like it the way it is, or do you want to change it? If it’s the latter, what kind of look or feeling do you want the space to have? Buy for the way you want the room to be, not necessarily the way it is; that way, you’re not tossing out your furniture in three years when you finally get around to decorating it the way you want it.

The ribbon bar is a bit annoying at first, at least until you find your way around. Some of the options are where you least expect them to be. Like in excel for example, move or copy sheet is under "Format". ......why?

The best thing to do when you need your leather  furniture repair is just to take it to the professionals. They will save you a lot of heartache because they are best suited to handle any type of leather furniture. There are two ways of coloring upholstery leather with dyes only or with dyes and pigments and we like to do leather sofas repair.
