Answers to this week's MSDN Events "unanswerables" in Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI Qs

Q) Is it possible to integrate the mobile device emulator with actual hardware (e.g. camera, GPS)?

A) I always seem to be one step behind with the mobile device emulator questions.  As we go to print, I haven't found anything specifically addressing actual hardware integration with the emulator, but I have found an answer to the question about emulating incoming calls (see previous "unaswerables").  As it turns out, with Windows Mobile 2003 and earlier, you can Use Radio-Provided Wireless GSM Telephony in the Emulator.  Now, if anyone can answer the above question...

Q) What is the proper order for VSTO 2005 installation? What are the customer requirements to use VSTO solutions?
A)  The proper order for VSTO 2005 installation is

   1) .NET Framework 2.0 (to create the global assembly cache, or GAC)

   2) Office 2003 (with the primary interop assemblies - PIAs - explicitly installed)

   3) Visual Studio / VSTO 2005

According to this article (How To: Install Visual Studio Tools for Office), Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office (VSTO 2005) requires any of the following: Word 2003, Excel 2003, Outlook 2003 or Office Professional 2003 (among other options).  I am not aware of a difference between the stand-alone versions of Word, Excel and Outlook and the Office Standard versions, so the documentation seems to imply that any of the aforementioned products would be suitable, so long as the primary interop assemblies (PIAs) are already installed.  For more information on PIA installation, check out this how-to article.

Q) Where can developers learn more about Office 2007 (not Office 2003) development?
A) You saw it here first.  Well, not literally... you probably saw it there when you clicked on the link.

Farmington Hills, MI Qs

Q) Is serialization supported in the .NET Compact Framework 2.0?
A) Basic serialization for SOAP messages and datasets is included in .NET CF 2.0.  For full details, see Differences between the .NET Framework 2.0 and the .NET CF 2.0.

Q) What support is available for migrating apps from embedded VB to .NET CF 2.0?
A) I did not find an article on embedded VB -> .NET CF 2.0 development, but here is an article to help you migrate your embedded VB to .NET.

You can integrate some hardware like GPS devices.  I have been working on a small GPS application using a Bluetooth GPS antenna.  To do this I setup the GPS antenna with my Windows XP desktop first and figured out looked at what COM port it was using.  Then when I wanted to use it in the emulator I would open my Bluetooth settings and connect to the GPS antenna.  Once that was connected and you have the emulator running you need to do the following:

1. Select the File menu
2. Select Configure
3. Select the Peripherials tab
4. Under Serial port 0: select the port you want to connect to on your computer
5. Click OK

You should now be able to connect to your device.  The emulator appears to put this connection on COM1.

Eric,

Thank you for answering this question.  It's always nice to hear about cool things that we can do with technology.  Let this be a lesson to all of you who read my blog - answering questions is always appreciated.  As a special thank you, Eric, I will personally come to your home town and present on Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005 for you and a group of friends and colleagues.

Like they say, "one good turn deserves another."  And when I was in Detroit, I learned that they take it literally, only they call it a "Michigan U-Turn".

Cheers,
Jacob

Thanks for a great presentation in Ann Arbor Michigan.. I really enjoyed your presentation a lot, I was trying to show one of my web developer friends who lives in Florida. He does real estates site why a WPF based smart client interface would look great on his sites instead of his CSS/PHP current sites that he does and how that functionality would be improved. I found the video of the WPF presentation with that stuff on it, but it's like 40 megabytes, and I don't think it's very email friendly. Do you have a version of this presentation online somewhere or a powerpoint of it. I just want him to see the WPF functionality and how I think a smart client in addition to his web based product would improve on their saleability..  Is there a link somewhere to this stuff?

Plus: I totally agree with you on the Batman Beyond DVD thing, I decidied to buy justice league season 1 instead.. Hope you liked Ann Arbor, your presentation style is quite cute and very affable. I hope you come back to the area. I didn't really have time to come up and say hello after the demo but was quite impressed at the quality of what you fit into that small amount of time. Hope you didn't run into any "Bearenstein Bears" on the way home :-)

Don,

I don't happen to have an online version of the WPF presentation.  However, you can check out the Northface WPF video on Channel 9 - http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=116327.

Also, consider visiting the Windows Presentation Foundation Developer Center - http://msdn.microsoft.com/winfx/reference/presentation/default.aspx.

Cheers,
Jacob

PS How is the Justice League Season 1 DVD set?
