I don't care what you use to archive your tunes (I use WMA lossless, but then I have 600G of storage, 150G of which are in use) But if you're going to re-rip, you should use Exact Audio Copy with AccurateRip to do it. (www.exactaudiocopy.de & www.accuraterip.com, respectively). Between the two, you'll get as close to guaranteed accurate, jitter free rips, with the tracks being divided at the proper points.

I've ripped to FLAC, which can then be transcoded to whatever format and/or bitrate you want. I keep a set of lossless, a set of high bitrate MP3, and a set of low bitrate MP3. Works great.

Ripped my entire CD collection, ~250 CDs, and saved all the WAV files using EAC. These are my "master" files. Then I use LAME to batch-convert all the WAV files into MP3's.

I figure with this approach, I can re-encode every few years, as the formats change and evolve, and I never have to re-rip the CDs. Also I don't have to decide on the quality at the time of ripping - just at the time of encoding.

HDD space is cheap, so I'm not concerned about the cost of storing and backing up the WAV files.

Works for me.

Personally, I am sick of the closed off music formats. Play them here, but not elsewhere. When does it all end? I say to heck with it and feel like just going with OGG or FLAC formats at this point....

Have you tried an MCE plugin called MediaBridge? I have no need for it so I can't vouch for it, but it allows syncing between iTunes and WMP 10, hence MCE.

If it works, you won't have to worry about re-ripping unless you go lossless.

Correction to my previous comment. MediaBridge should be Music Bridge and I see you mentioned using it in a previous post.
