Flight Game Plan : Try and sleep if possible.
Flight Number : UA558
Date : June 24th
Class Travelled : Cattle
In flight meal : Nuts and drinks ... declined.

Number of book pages read (this flight/cumulative) : 0 / 184
Movie/PMC Hours Watched (this flight/cumulative) : 0h 0m / 11h 07m
Flight Time (est/act) : 1h 50m / 1h 50m
Arrival Time (est/act) : 12:45pm / 1:53pm
Total Miles : 29407
Total Air Time : 51h 48m

Kept to Plan? : Having exhausted most of my battery powered devices and read my book, I spent this journey either snoozing or staring out of the window. There are a lot of impressive mountains between San Francisco and Seattle with Mt Rainier being the king of them all! And I'm talking single mountain peaks here, not amorphous ranges.

MEDC World Tour : Flight 10 (Beijing to San Francisco)

Flight Game Plan : This is a LOOOONG flight. Get home ... just get home!
Flight Number : UA888
Date : June 24th
Class Travelled : Cattle
In flight meal : Multiple. Rice and fish. Breakfast and another meal I think I slep through.

Number of book pages read (this flight/cumulative) : 49 / 184 (I finished the book)
Movie/PMC Hours Watched (this flight/cumulative) : 2h 30 / 11h 07m
Flight Time (est/act) : 11h 25m / 11h 55m
Arrival Time (est/act) : 8:40am / 9:17am
Total Miles : 28729
Total Air Time : 49h 58m

Kept to Plan? : Well, I didn't have a plan other than to get home. I managed to exhaust nearly every battery powered device I carried! iPod, laptop and PMC. Fortunately I also had my trusty shuffle to keep me going. I managed to sleep on and off.

MEDC World Tour : Day 21, Beijing (June 23rd) - MEDC China Day 1

I started Day 21 a little misty eyed - figuratively speaking. After all, MEDC China was the last MEDC event for 2005. At this stage, I'd been working on the events for nearly 9 months so they're very much a part of life and it seemed a little strange to look at coming weeks which didn't have anything MEDC related to do. I resolved to put my performance of the night before behind me and bring my 'A' game into play for the last event.

As I think I mentioned before, aside from my demos the MEDC China keynote was deliver in Chinese to enable the largest portion of the audience to understand. The implication being that English was very much a second language to most of the people in the audience and hence extra pressure on me to deliver clearly. That's an extra challenge for me and of course, makes you think very hard about exactly what you're saying and how. My recommendation for next year's MEDC Keynote team will be to present their demos to a non-English speaking audience. A row of blank stares is one way to make you be clear, concise and to the point.

To aid audience comprehension, I had an assistant for my demos (Thanks Giao Hua!). Giao Hua's job was to introduce my demo and to interject at appropriate points to explain to the audience what was going on. Of course, he did this in Chinese.

My three demos were bookended by two local demos delivered in Chinese:

Demo 1 - Demonstrating how Windows Mobile is the only platform able to completely meet the GoTone specification for phones in China.

Demo 2 - Microsoft Research China. AMAZING demno showing an app that can control your Media Center PC from your phone over Bluetooth as well as control Powerpoint. The Powerpoint control feature was especially cool because it allowed you to preview slides on your phone BEFORE you updated the display on the connected laptop.

I like to think I managed to find a little something somewhere to make the demos entertaining and improve on my performance the previous evening.

The rest of the event was pretty cool. It was awesome seeing things like the agenda in Chinese. Since I knew I was heading home I collected a bunch of MEDC/Developer things that were in CHinese : a backpack, a developing for Windows Mobile book in Chinese! and the tags from the water bottles. The water bottle tags each had a Windows Mobile 5.0 feature on them. Apparently there were 168 unique tags across the 6000 water bottles. I collected perhaps 15 of them!

I had the opportunity to speak to a number of local developers. It seems there's quite a degree of sophistication around the Windows Mobile platform in China. There were also a tonne of local/international sponsors.

Later in the evening, the event content owner, Leon, took us out for a Chinese meal. Beijing is famous for its duck so we went to a restaurant pupporting to serve good duck and it really delivered. I even got a demonstration of how to make a proper duck filled pancake. The celebratory dinner marked the end of MEDC. All that remained for me was to fly home!

Thanks to Wei Qing, Leon, Su Chen and team for putting on a great event and making me feel so welcome.

MEDC World Tour : Day 20, Beijing (June 22nd) MEDC China Preparation

I had an interesting discussion with one of our leads from China when he was visiting Redmond a few months back. We were discussing cost of the event in China - which I felt was rather steep compared to other events we were holding AND of course I had the typically western perception that everything in China, particularly labor, was very cheap.

Arriving at the event brought the result of our discussion into sharp focus. Let me also prefix my comments by saying that everyone at MEDC China did an outstanding job and brought together a thoroughly professional event. Back to my observation! My colleague had explained that historically in China you tended to work with a few big companies. If you were putting on an event, you would work with a company who did everything for the event. This contrasts with the structure here in the US where you have many different companies who all have very tight specializations ... including the company who is responsible for managing all these other companies! The net result of this, as he described it to me, was that you tended to get a lower overall level of specialization and things tended to have to be done more than once. And so it proved when I arrived for MEDC China. My perception was that everything was moving VERY slowly compared to the number of support staff who appeared to be working for the event and comparatively, there were a lot of staff working on the setup. What appeared to be lacking in speed was more than made up for by hard work and willing to see the job through. It turns out, most of the team worked until 5am to make sure everything was just so.

The keynote room for this event was very wide. Anyone who's talked to me about keynotes will know I tend to prefer long over wide. With long, the speaker can connect more easily and with less walking/turning than a wide room. THe room in China was about 15-20 rows deep and about 100m wide. It literally took 15 seconds to walk across the stage! This keynote was a little different to the others as I was delivering some keynote demos in amongst a Chinese language keynote and other demos in Chinese. I was also asked to do a more "consumer focussed" demo which meant I spent most of this day building and scripting a brand new demo. I had hoped to use the Samsung i300 I had been carrying around but - because it was an early pre-production model - I was having some issues with it so had to go with an alternate platform.

My new demo consisted of :

Showing how you can download DRM content and sync it to your Windows Mobile 5.0 device, in my case Tottenham Hotspur highlights (www.spurs.co.uk)

Showing some of the new features in Excel and Powerpoint Mobile .. in the latter I was showing that it existed for the first time!

Showing the groovy Xbox customization Ford showed in Bill's keynote in Las Vegas

Once I had built that out including my backup scenarios I was ready to rehearse by about 7pm. Unfortunately the room wasn't ready until about 10pm so I had some waiting and thumb twiddling to do. I made myself useful by suggesting some changes to the demo station configuration, for example :

Drilling holes through the table top so we could feed the cables down the back rather than the front. I guaranteed I'd have pulled all my laptops off if I'd been anywhere near the cables.

Moving the visualizer to a separate table. Locating a visualizer and three different demoers kit on a single 6ft bench was never going to work

A KVM switch located on the demo station to put the presenters more in control of which laptop was being shown on the screens

By the time we got to the run through I guess I was tired. Let's face it, I was at the back end of a long trip and I think my enthusiasm and patience were wearing thin. I can honestly say, the China run through was the most pedestrian performance I had given to date. I was most disappointed in myself. I was also a little worried about the screen/audio switches being handled by the AV team because they didn't appear to be concentrating. As it turned out, they must have been because the actual keynote went a lot more smoothly than the run through.

In some ways I was glad to be in the keynote room - even though I was missing out on Beijing. Even at 11pm the outside temperature was above 30 degrees Celsius. Unpleasantly hot! After rehearsals ... off to bed to get some rest. This time, I made sure I set multiple alarms to be sure.

MEDC World Tour : Flight 9 (Hong Kong to Beijing)

Flight Game Plan : Stay awake as best I can otherwise i'll never sleep tonight.
Flight Number : CX312
Date : June 21st
Class Travelled : Cattle
In flight meal : Declined. Cathy Pacific have the smallest seats i've encountered on this trip to date.

MEDC World Tour : Day 18, Melbourne (June 20th) MEDC Australia - Sleep Nearly Wrecks Keynote!

I'd been wondering how quickly I could get the keynote demos setup if I REALLY had to. I turns out, I can get washed, dressed, from my room to the keynote and set up the demos in 20 minutes. Now I think that's impressive. Let me explain. My sleep patterns are completely destroyed. I fall asleep at random times and cannot sleep when I'm supposed to. I couldn't sleep the night before the Melbourne keynote so I sat up staring at the TV. At SOME point I feel into a catatonic sleep not hearing either of the alarms going off by my head.

When my hotel roon phone woke me up I knew that I was probably late. WHy else would someone call? It turned out that it was 8:44am and I was VERY late. Quite why noone called my room earlier is a mystery. Still it gave me an opportunity to discover EXACTLY how quickly I could get dressed and get everything set up. And that time is 20 minutes. The person who called me later commended me on sounding so calm when I picked up the phone. I figured everyone else would be panicking so it would be best if I appeared to have everything under control.

Second issue of the day was speaker related. Eventually a trip like this will take it's toll on you physically. It decided to take it's toll on both Robert and Scott simultaneously necessitating a visit to the doctor. Rather than do time consuming tests, the doctor just prescribed a drug for each of the three possible conditions relating to the conditions. Robert and Scott now rattle with pills but it looks like they're going to make it through.

Thank you to the 400 or so people who showed up to the event! I hope you all took away how cool Windows Mobile 5.0 and Visual Studio 2005 are! Unfortunately I won't be joining you in Sydney cos I'm off to MEDC CHina and the events are so close together it's physically impossible for me to get from SYdney to Beijing. Since I've done one Australia event I figured I should go to Beijing and see our developers in China.

MEDC World Tour : Day 16 and 17, Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne (June 18th and 19th)

Flying. Lots of flying. Well at least it seemed as much but only totalled 8 hours or so. We arrived in Melbourne a 5am on the 19th. I was disappointed that they didn't have the "fruit and vegetation" sniffer dogs in the customs hall this year. Last year, I'd been so impressed by a sniffer dog smelling that one of my collegues had cookies which contained orange peel in her bag. I mean, it IS fruit but heavliy processed.

Scott foolishly ticked the "I have food in my bag" box on the immigration form which singled him out for special treatment. Special treatment it turns out is that his bag DOESN'T go through the xray scanner on the way out of the baggage hall. Duly noted.

For some reason, our hotel was very heavily booked. In fact they claimed 100% occupied. This wouldn't have been a problem if they had any record of my room. Fortunately (for me) Robert hadn't arrived yet so they gave me his room. Unfortunately for Robert who arrived 30 minutes after I did I got the last room. Since both Robert and I were tired and had both resolved to "get a few hours kip" before doing anything today I offered him a spot in my room to crash until his room became available. That'll show us for getting in so early in the day.

Predictably, I didn't wake up until late in the day. Thinking about the jet lag situation, there's no logic to my getting up so late since it wasn't pursuant with any time zone anywhere. I'm guessing my body has given up keeping track of time zones and just sleeps when it feels like it.

This evening. Keynote prep. Are you seeing a pattern here? The good news is I have the prep time down considerably. The setup in each room is subtly different but the AV team here were excellent, friendly and weren't tripped up by my collection of random requests :

Can I have a visualizer on the left AND right desk but control it from the right

Can I have a laptop off stage for controlling Peter's speaker notes

Can I set up my own wireless LAN right in the middle of your sensitive AV equipment

Once setup and run through dinner was next on the agenda. The event is in the Crown Towers Casino/Resort. Peter and I had arranged to meet Andrew (a local DE) and Nick (a local MVP) for dinner in the lobby of "the other" hotel. Lessons learned :

Apparently, my demo kit consisting a back pack and attache case cannot be carried through the casino floor

Crown Towers Casino is a maze. Ask for directions early and often

Crown Casino security guards give all their directions so that you DON'T need to cross the casino floor. This is counter intuitive to me since they work for the casino and the casino wants people on the floor gambling. It is however, very responsible and that is to be admired.

MEDC World Tour : Flight 7 (Singapore to Melbourne)

Flight Game Plan : Try to get some sleep so when I arrive at 5am i don't feel too bad!
Flight Number : QF0010
Date : June 18th
Class Travelled : Cattle
In flight meal : Declined

I claimed I was in London. Kuala Lumpur to London to Singapore to Australia. Now THAT would be a crazy trip.

I half planned to do some sight seeing with Robert today but I didn't wake up until 2pm for some reason so I missed out on the fun. He went to the Batu Caves and saw monkeys. I'm disappointed I missed the monkeys. After I got up I went to the lounge in the hotel and worked on the wireless LAN. I wish I'd realized earlier they had free wireless (and snacks) in the lounge! The staff were very sweet, I was blowing my nose every three seconds so they kept coming along with carefully folded tissues every time I ran out.

For dinner, we hooked up with some local Malaysian developers, Raman and his two cohorts who had taken Robert to the Batu Caves. They went straight there and Scott and I caught the monorail yo the KL Tower. Well, to NEAR the KL Tower. We walked the rest. It was one of those things where it LOOKS pretty close and it is, except you have to weave up a huge hill to get there which is a significant challenge in 99% humidity. Both of us had shed a few pounds by the time we reached the foot of the tower to catch the elevator to the restaurant.

Thanks to Raman and co for making us so welcome in KL! The meal was excellent and buffet style which I always like. I was also thankful that Malaysia was once a British colony because it meant they served a roast dinner. Absurd of course but nevertheless, meat, potatoes, gravy and vegetables are very welcome after 2 weeks on the road.

MEDC World Tour : Day 14, London (June 16th) - MEDC Malaysia!

What a great event here in Malysia again. As I said yesterday, what an amazing event team and what a great group of engaged developers.

Our day kicked off at about 7.30 with a taxi to the convention center. You should never underestimate traffic in a new city so we were a little late in. Fortunately, the demo rig (minus the expensive pieces) remained untouched from the previous night so I just needed to hook everything up and even had time for one more run through of my "developer" demo.

Of course, nothing ever goes completely smoothly in a keynote. Usually attendee perception comes down to two things :

Whether you can notice things go wrong before the crowd does and miss them out/cover over them

Of something obvious goes wrong, how well do you recover?

I had experience of both during the Malaysia keynote. Using beta software is always risky and ActiveSync crashed during sync demonstrating some of the new Messaging and Security Feature Pack features ... in exactly the same way as it did in Reading. Has it done it in the interim? Nope! That one was impossible to cover as it had a big crash dialog but I had a backup device so I could switch to that. That takes care of situation 2) above. How about situation 1)? Well, my backup device is actually used to close the demo and demonstrate the "local wipe" feature where data is erased from the device because someone fails to login in a preset number of times. I need a second device because it needs to sit for a couple of minutes to go into lock mode. Swapping to that device meant I needed to unlock it and hope the original device would lock before I got to the local wipe portion. Unfortunately it didn't so rather than :

a) Wait like an idiot
b) Or mention there was something I had intended to do but couldn't

I just wrapped up my demo, remembering to miss out the missing feature from my script, and left the stage without anyone knowing better. Situation 1) illustrated.

The keynote lead to the press conference. This was my first proper press conference and as usual I talked more than my fair share : note to self - shut up.

I spent the rest of the day going to sessions and speaking to local developers. Bob Rapp's Microsoft Enterprise IT Infrastructure session was very interesting. I'd heard good things about Bob as a speaker and he very much lived up to expectations. Not many people have a genuiinely unusual presentation style and Bob is one. Like myself, he doesn't fear being self-deprecating and that makes it easier for him to connect with the audience.

The day ended with a prize giveaway. In all seriousness, if an attendee DIDN'T leave with a prize I think they were unlucky. I've never seen so many Microsoft keyboards given away!

We concluded the day with dinner at Shri Malayu which is a Malaysian restaurant, buffet style serving local treats. There's also live entertainment. A couple of my colleagues had already visited the restaurant and were able to confidently predict that a Malay couple would get married on stage tonight and low and behold ANOTHER wedding. Well ... it's fun for the tourists. I'd have found it fun if I'd not been pre-warned ... darn. The food, by the way, was excellent. Many MANY things to choose from and all in the Asian/Indian fusion that I'm a big fan of.

MEDC World Tour : Day 13, Kuala Lumpur (June 15th) - Getting Ready for MEDC Malaysia

Today was about preparation for MEDC Malaysia. I had some technical prep work to do on my keynote demos. One of the key things with getting keynote demos to work properly is a well known defined start state. For me it's all about reproducibility. I'd been having some issues with one of my demos in the UK and I wanted to bash on that to understand what the problem was. Of course, I couldn't reproduce the problem so I had to assume it would be OK. Murphy's law will decide ...

I'm collecting local data for the restaurant data demo, so I needed to type that into the data editor in Visual Studio 2005. That's a GREAT new feature enabling you to edit SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition data files on your desktop. Can you imagine T9ing data into a database for a demo!

I also needed to reconfigure my Messaging and Security Feature Pack demo devices ... the ones that went wrong in the UK. A by product of doing a demo of the "local wipe" feature is that the demo device gets wiped and needs to be reconfigured each time. That's not a big deal for me because, like I say, I'm pretty good at reproducing a set of steps over and over. The challenge for me here is that I fried the wireless network hub power supply in the UK and I need to hook the device up to my Exchange Server VPC I have. It turns out, as long as I can get both the host machine and VPC image connected to the same network and talking to each other I can use Activesync passthru to do the configuration. That still requires some kind of network facility and the hotel charge by IP address. That problem had to wait until I got onsite and could borrow a small Ethernet hub.

I'm always impressed by the production values here in Malaysia. In terms of budget it has one of the smallest of all the events but they're able to do amazing things with that budget. We were greated with a brand new convention center at the foot of the Petronas Towers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronas_Twin_Towers). We're only the second event in the new convention center.

Favorite Petronas Towers Fact : Each tower was built by a different consultant from different countries... cynics say to ensure competition and to get the towers put up quickly!

In addition to a brand new facility, the support team were amazing and extremely professional. I was able to get the demos setup up and the AV wired in very quickly so the run through was pretty painless. Peter - our keynote speaker - arrived and was able to get his slides ready, get all the video cues lined up and get to bed. He'd have got to bed quicker if I'd not wanted to do one last run through of my demos and handovers. There's a few things I think are really important to smooth keynote demos :

Have a Demo Roadmap - By which I mean know where you're trying to get to and what you need to do and say to get there. Know this backwards. Know which parts of the map you can safely leave out. I find myself leaving stuff out a lot because I notice something isn't working right!

Rehearse a lot - this seems obvious but I have a catch phrase "Do it like you would on the day!". I see a lot of people who run through the demo but not on their final equipment or with bits missing or will say things like "I'll do it differently on the day" or "Then I'll say something about foo". My questions are : "How do you know?" and "Well why not just say it now"

Get your physical cues DOWN - The body has an amazing talent for re-running physical tasks over and over with little effort. Every time you set up your demo do it the same way with your devices, keyboard, laptop, switcher etc in the same place. If you get used to the way the demo feels it becomes a lot easier to do

Know your starting configuration - know every way your demo can go wrong and have a plan.

Those 4 tips should get you a LONG way if you're willing to put the effort in to them.

MEDC World Tour : Day 11 + 12, London (June 13rd and 14th) - Journey to Malaysia

When you're doing an international trip that ends up being a complete circuit of the world and stops in at lots of countries in different time zones you eventually lose track of where you are and what time it is. What's going to end up happening is that we're going to see day 23 twice because sooner or later I'm going to cross the international date line. Hence, days 11 and 12 somewhat blurred into one! I also started to get sick. To cut a long story short :

1) You don't need anti-malarial tablets in Kuala Lumpur, contrary to advice from my doctor
2) A popular, new anti-malarial tablet which pupports not to have side effects does in fact have malaria like side effects
3) I spent from when I arrived in Malaysia to when I got up to go to keynote rehearsal learning lessons 1 and 2 above

Still the hotel in Kuala Lumpur is stunning. It's the new Hilton which is less than a year old so it has the latest amenities. I like particularly the TV embedded in the bathroom mirror. At least I liked it a lot more when one of the six supposedly intelligent Microsoft people staying at the hotel figured out how to make it work.

MEDC World Tour : Flight 5 (Singapore to Kuala Lumpur) - Change of Flight

When I got to singapore I found my planned flight on Japan Airlines had been cancelled. Fortunately, they were able to transfer me to Qatar Airways who had a flight to KL that was scheduled before my planned flight.
